Intercontinental Opens New Fiji Resort

Fiji's Natadola Beach is home to the new InterContinental Fiji Golf Resort and Spa set to open on June 1. The hotel is spread across 35 acres of tropical gardens and faces a stretch of white sand beach. The beach is protected by a reef creating a quiet ocean-facing lagoon.

The resort has 216 rooms and suites and every room has a private terrace or balcony with a tub and day beds for two. The resort has four pools including an adult-only infinity-edged pool, and a family activity pool. The resort offers many recreation options including a dive center, beach activities center, volleyball, Pétanque lawn, yoga deck, full gym and on-site shopping and tour facilities. For families, a kids club has educational and fun activities. There are five restaurants and bars and an 18-hole golf course offers amazing views to distract you from your game. The resort spa includes a Wai Water Zone offering gas, liquid and solid aquatherapy treatments and improbably enough, Fiji's first Ice Room. Special opening rates start around $130 a night.

Fiji's "Hat Island" For Sale

We've seen plenty of gorgeous private islands before but rarely one with such a unique topography as Vatu Vara in Fiji. Known as "Hat Island" for its distinctive flat summit, the island has limestone cliffs, tropical jungle and a beautiful lagoon. The summit of the mountain is 1,300 feet. The volcanic and limestone island is nearly 2 miles in diameter at its base and the peak is visible from nearby islands. The island is surrounded by several beaches and the reefs provide ample opportunities for fishing and scuba diving. The property is a rare freehold island with a rare price to match, a hefty $75 million. The remote location and odd natural beauty of this island make is seem both beautiful and a bit sinister, like somewhere that a remake of Island of Dr. Moreau or Jurassic Park could be filmed.

Join a Timeshare Tribe

Tribewanted.com is a new concept in timeshare vacations that combines the traditional location-sharing arrangements with a tropical island. The catch is that all participants in the "tribe" are responsible for overseeing the eco-friendly development of a Pacific Island. Essentially, it's a real life variation on Survivor, with teamwork, construction and a tropical island, but without the contests and voting, though there will be a documentary crew on site taking weekly videos of the people and the project.

For $220 to $660, you can join for 1-3 years and visit the island, near Fiji,  for 1-3 weeks (airfare is not included). During your visit, you will be filmed while you participate in the development of a sustainable village community. Broadcasts will be put on the Tribewanted website for other participants to view. The fact that members must work together in the building process and the development process - from selecting island locations to which buildings will have solar panels - is where the "tribe" concept comes from. There will be a local tribal chief overseeing the project.
