Baby Supercar: Abarth 695 Tributo Ferrari

At polar ends of the vastly expanding Fiat empire sit the Italian auto industry's sportiest, most performance-oriented marques: Abarth at one end, with its turbocharged little hatchbacks, and Ferrari at the other, with its fire-breathing exotic supercars. But now the two companies have come together for an exclusive project using the base from one as a tribute to the other.

Called the Abarth 695 Tributo Ferrari, it's essentially a Fiat 500 at heart, but tuned by engineers at Abarth and Ferrari to transform into another beast entirely. The eye-catching red paintjob with grey stripes mimics the Ferrari 430 Scuderia. Inside, watchmaker Jaeger-LeCoultre has fitted special instruments, and Sabelt has crafted special bucket seats. Under the hood, the turbocharged 1.4-liter 16-valve engine has been tuned by the collaborating engineers to produce over 180 horsepower, with a variable exhaust system and a paddle-shifted automated manual transmission. Brembo brakes hide behind 17" competition-spec wheels. And while it may not be the baby Ferrari some people have been waiting for, it's the closest some might get.

The 1120HP Motor Launch from Lancia

What's the matter, was 1050 horsepower not enough for your taste? Then feast your eyes on this: the Lancia di Lancia. Although powered by two six-cylinder turbo diesels instead of the Powershore Abarth SP's three V8 outboards, the Lancia powerboat produced by the same collaboration with SACS Marine responsible for sister-company Abarth's speedboat offers up 1120 horsepower to the Abarth's 1050.

The motor launch from Lancia, as it's called, is also wrapped in a sleeker package, with inboard engines and a covered cockpit accessible through the retractable windshield and Martini Racing stripes recalling the company's historic rally victories. Like its sister-ship, however, the Lancia di Lancia is a Rigid Inflatable Boat – basically a hard hull with a rubber tube around it. The vessel measures over 40 feet long, weighs 8.5 metric tons and can reach speeds in excess of 55 miles per hour. The Lancia di Lancia is scheduled to debut during the upcoming 66th International Film Festival in Venice at the Grand Hotel Excelsior next month.

SACS Powershore Abarth SP Hangs Three Yamaha V8s on a 40-Foot RIB

There's only so much power you can reasonably put in a car, and only so fast you can take one. So is it any wonder that carmakers and designers have been taking to the waves to get their thrills? The latest endeavor involves Italian automaker Fiat's legendary – and recently revived – performance division, Abarth, together with Yamaha (whose MotoGP racing team it sponsors and with which it has already turned out a special edition KZ1 super-bike) and shipyard SACS Marine.

What you're looking at is an inflatable – a Rigid Inflatable Boat (RIB) to be precise – but don't go mistaking this for a little dinghy. The SACS Powershore Abarth SP measures a giant 40 feet long, weighs nearly six tons and packs a trio of 350-horsepower Yamaha V8 outboard engines. It's got a bedroom, bathroom and galley below decks, and is set to debut at the 49th Salone Nautico Internazionale di Genova this coming October.

Fiat Tempts Dutch Buyers with Exclusive Special Edition 500 Abarth Competizione

While some automakers are celebrating their centenaries, Fiat's performance division is marking a much smaller anniversary: one year since the sport marque returned to the Dutch market. And to celebrate, they're launching an exclusive special edition of their hot-selling premium retro hatchback. Called the Fiat 500 Abarth Competizione, only ten examples will be made with a $35,000 price tag. For the premium price, a handful of buyers in the Netherlands will get special wheels and trim and all the extra equipment – including satellite navigation, climate control, special racing bucket seats and more – plus of course that indefinable quality we know as exclusivity.

Elle Macpherson Gets First New Fiat 500 Convertible

Sexy cars and sexy ladies always seem to be bundled together, no? Such is the case with the new Fiat 500 convertible, the first of which was recently delivered to supermodel Elle Macpherson at her home in Notting Hill. MacPherson reportedly owns a hardtop 500 and has been quoted in the past saying how much she loves it.

The 500C's electrically-operated soft top, which comes in ivory, red or black hues, features a full glass rear window and slides down the center of the car to the rear, leaving the door pillars intact. Fiat says this allows the car to serve as daily transportation regardless of the weather.

The car's European launch was just held at the Whisky Mist in London and, in addition to Elle MacPherson, was attended by Edoardo Agnelli, the nephew of Fiat's co-founder, will.I.am from the Black Eyed Peas and Amelle Berrabah from Sugababes. There's plenty more in the press release after the break.

Lapo Elkann's Custom Ferrari with Denim Interior

Filed under: Wheels, Wealth, Celebrity Design

Dashing Fiat heir Lapo Elkann is something of a dandy and while we generally admire his taste and what the Italians call sprezzatura, we're not too crazy about his new custom two-tone blue Ferrari with an interior upholstered in pairs of old jeans (see still above and video after the jump). Last time we checked Lapo was cruising around in a much more understated matte black Maserati Gran Turismo. The Ferrari, a 599 GTB Fiorano, is matte baby blue with a darker blue roof and rims with Italian flag details. There's also something resembling a bullet hole in the back. This isn't exactly as atrocious as the Brothel Prince's Louis Vuitton Rolls, but it's definitely in the same orbit. We appreciate that you're too rich to give a damn, but sometimes Lapo old sport you go a bit too far.

One-of-a-Kind Fiat 500C by Diesel to be Auctioned at Cannes AIDS Fundraiser

Special-edition premium retro hatchbacks seem to be all the rage at AIDS fundraisers these days. Every year Mini teams up with a different designer for a one-off vehicle donated to the LifeBall event. Diesel lent a hand one year, but this year the Italian jeanswear house has teamed up with Fiat and the Cinema Against AIDS Gala to produce the one-of-a-kind 500C you see here. Like the fixed-roof Diesel edition Fiat 500, this special example features a unique metallic green paintjob, a denim-upholstered interior and plenty of Diesel logos, but upgrades with a cloth folding roof and a 100-horsepower engine in the place of the 75hp unit on the regularly available fixed-roof version. Just one example of the special-edition Fiat 500C by Diesel will be made, joining big names like Sharon Stone, Harvey Weinstein, Annie Lennox and former U.S. President Bill Clinton in helping the American Foundation for AIDS Research break last year's record $7 million raised at the gala held in conjunction with the Cannes Film Festival later this month.

Pope Benedict XVI Tours Earthquake Zone in Special Fiat Ducato Panorama Van

The Pope can't just ride around in any old car. That's why he had to sell his Volkswagen before ascending from Cardinal to the Papacy. But the head of the Catholic church and head of state of Vatican City has a well-equipped motor pool at his disposal, including sport-utility vehicles donated to the Vatican by Volvo and BMW, a W12 Phaeton luxury sedan by Volkswagen, and of course the specially-made Popemobile from Mercedes-Benz. The latest, by comparisson, may seem the least prestigious, but desperate times call for desperate measures. So while touring the aftermath of the earthquake in Abruzzo, Italy, the Pope is riding around in a specially-equipped Fiat Ducato Panorama van.

The Ducato is one of the most prolific vehicles in Italy, with some 2 million on the road. But the Pope's, of course, is special, equipped with a white leather interior including a five-seater sofa, the latest electronics and deployable steps to allow the gowned pontiff easy ingress and egress.

Barbie's 50th Continues with a Pink Fiat 500

Barbie turned 50 this year, and in true diva style it seems she just can't stop celebrating. Her latest "gift," a bright pink Fiat 500, was unveiled last month in Milan. The car was created with the help of Mattel and features crystals on the hubcaps and trim, Barbie silhouettes on the pillars, and a 60's-style retro car cover to keep it all shiny and new.

Sounds great, right? Not really, as apparently Barbie won't get to drive it, she'll just get to be a passenger. Fiat reps were quoted as saying "Barbie will be aboard and she'll have her own special driver: Ken, of course."

What's that about???

Fiat Goes Beachy With The Fiat Fiorino Portofino

A car with nautical ropes instead of doors? You are staring at the 2008 Fiat Fiorino Portofino. Fiat Professional asked customizer Vernagallo-Holiday and SALT to create a show car that looked like the Italian luxury beach buggies of the 1950s and 1960s. They took one of Fiat's FIorino vans and created this. The car has wood laminate flooring and the interior was created using natural fibers treated with a special waterproofing. They say it can seat five (five beach bunnies perhaps) and the rear seat folds down for your nautical gear. It's not known if the Fiat Fiorino Portofino will be produced as a regular car for the masses but it will be making the show rounds. Autoblog has a couple hi-res shots of this unique creature.

Fiat Introduces Cellphone Line

Fiat is rolling out a line of branded cell phones this month. The phones are made out of aluminum, emblazoned with the Fiat logo and are colored with the brand's signature blue. In stores, they will be displayed in specially designed cases that are meant to evoke the pistons of 4-cylinder engine. The phones will offer internet access, MP3 playback, a digital camera with video, photo albums and Bluetooth. Some of the phones will actually be waterproof, targeted at water-sports enthusiasts. They are scheduled to launch first in Italy, but will be more widely available, at least in Europe, later in the summer season.
