Prince Charles' Ferrari Daytona Up for Auction

1973 Ferrari 365 GTB/4 Daytona - chassis #16531

A very special Ferrari is set to cross the auction block in May. One of only 1,400 examples made, and only 158 in right-hand drive, this metallic blue 1973 Ferrari 365 GTB/4 Daytona has some very prominent provenance indeed.

Chassis #16531 most recently appeared on an episode of the hit BBC television program Top Gear, where celebrity presenter Richard Hammond drove it along the riviera from Portofino to Saint-Tropez while his co-host James May raced him in a speedboat. But long before the filming of the episode, its first owner was none other than HRH Charles, Prince of Wales. The car is being auctioned by Historics at Brooklands and is expected to fetch around £180,000 - £210,000.

Vintage Ferraris Sell for Seven Figures at RM Amelia Island

You wouldn't know we were in the midst of a major recession. Not by looking at the recent results from Amelia Island last week, where RM Auctions managed to sell some $19 million worth of cars with a remarkable 88% sale rate. Among them were four automobiles that exceeded the million-dollar mark: one classic Duesenberg, and three classic Ferraris.

But the vintage Prancing Horses in question were not from the iconic 250 series –like the GTO, Testa Rossa or California Spyder – which has broken all the records recently. These were the models that came after, and they each fetched seven figures. A rare 1971 Daytona Spyder once owned by auto scion Edsel Ford II sold at a hair over a million. A copper-toned, alloy-bodied 275 GTB/4 used as Ferrari's North American show car in 1967 went for a little under estimate at $1.26 million. And a stunning yellow 275 showpiece topped the bidding at $1.65 million, setting new high-water marks for late 60\'s/early 70s Ferraris.

Prestigious Classic Ferraris on the Block at RM Amelia Island

Time doesn't wait when rare Ferraris change hands. So even with the economy still rebounding, million-dollar prancing horses are still set to change hands and command seven-figure prices at RM Auctions' upcoming event on Amelia Island. Still a few months away, the March auction is set to feature two rare and highly valued Ferrari classics.

First up is a rare Daytona Spyder. Often imitated, only 121 examples of the Daytona Spyder were produced, and of them only 22 in yellow. This particular example had only three owners, including one Edsel Ford II, great-grandson of Henry Ford. It's expected to fetch over $1 million at auction.

It'll be followed by a rare alloy-bodied, four-cam 275 GTB/4, pictured above. Commissioned by Ferrari's official importer Luigi Chinetti, this unique copper example was shown at the 1967 New York Auto Show, and is estimated at $1.35-1.75 million.
