Feadship Launches Largest Yacht Ever - For Paul Allen?

Filed under: Yachts & Sailing, Wealth

Dutch shipyard Feadship builds some of the world's most coveted superyachts; in addition to Russian oligarch Roman Abramovich's Ecstesea, the likes of Malcolm Forbes, Paul Allen and King Khalid of Saudi Arabia all commissioned luxurious vessels from them. Now the shipyard has launched its newest, largest and most expensive superyacht ever, the 288-ft. Musashi (above) built for an unnamed billionaire, leading to speculation that one of the boldfaced names on its client roster decided it was time for an upgrade. Our money is on Paul Allen, who recently listed his 303-ft. superyacht Tatoosh for sale at $160 million meaning he's probably in the market for a replacement (he still has the Octopus).

The Musashi's massive steel hull was constructed by Feadship's dedicated hull-building facility in Papendrecht, Netherlands, and was delivered to Makkum for outfitting. Her quadruple MTU 16V 4000 M90 marine diesel engines kick out a combined 14,600 hp, though the shipyard has not released any performance specs. The Musashi's naval architecture and exterior design were created by Feadship's own De Voogt Naval Architects, while the luxe interiors including an enormous master suite were done by the Netherlands' Sinot Yacht Design.

315-ft. Project Orca, Megayacht of the Future

We've seen a lot of futuristic superyacht designs that look extremely cool and avant garde, and have no chance at all of ever being built. The 315-ft. Project Orca (above) by UK-based designer Michael Leach is an exception; it's currently under construction at the famed Blohm + Voss shipyard, scheduled for delivery in spring 2010. Leach's 220-ft. Anna for Feadship, one of their largest ever, won a World Superyacht Award for best displacement motor yacht. The Orca features a futuristic exoskeletal curving superstructure, aggressive lines and innovative glazing. Its enormous entertaining and private spaces will feature bespoke furniture from British firm Silverlining, with each piece handmade by a single craftsman and stamped with their signature silver hallmark. Metrica will handle the interior execution, and Cougar Marine will provide two custom limousine tenders stored on the yacht's sports deck.

Feadship's F-Stream

At the Monaco Boat Show, Feadship showed off the design of the F-stream their 55-meter luxury yacht. The F-Stream seems to reflect where the yacht business is heading, away from the blockier ttri-deck model and into a slimmer, more streamlined design. The F-stream uses a hybrid propulsion system with two dieselelectric cycloidal propulsion-rudder systems that offer silent cruising and in passive mode – can also serve as rudders. The fully submerged axial water jets also help increase the speed of the yacht. On the F-stream the master stateroom is located aft on the bridge deck and has a private sun deck. The top deck has solar panels and a getaway area called the Snug, a cozy little nook in which to enjoy the view. The low open "beach" deck has two water recreation areas. The design reminds me a bit of the new design from Humphreys and also the Ferretti 630 with sleek looks that put the focus on the year of the yacht.

Feadship Launches First F45 Vantage

Feadship has launched Space, the first in their F45 Vantage semi-custom line. The 146-foot motoryacht is the flagship of the first series of three (the other two are already sold and slated for delivery at the end of 2007 and summer of 2008). The F45 Vantage is designed to be a home away from home and serve as a second home or floating beach house. The designers did with the interior formal dining room and placed the galley on the lower deck to offer more space for guest suites on the main deck. Each F45 Vantage can be customized through four different styles: Miami (classic art deco), Monaco (informal French), Milano (classic modern) and Nautical (distinguished and traditional). The yacht has a speed of 14.5 knots. A second series of three is already in production. The F45s will have four guest cabins (Space has three due to a configuration change). The owner's stateroom has a large glass skylight. Outside the sun deck has a Jacuzzi and sun pads. The lower deck includes the galley, crew mess, captain's cabin and four crew cabins.

Feadship's New Yacht Is A Big Tease

For dedicated yachtspotters, sometimes a tease of a new yacht can be worse than no picture at all. Feadship has stirred up the interest of the megayacht-loving public by releasing this picture of the new 219-foot twin screw motoryacht Anna. Anna is the largest yacht in terms of volume ever built by the De Vries yard in Aalsmeer, the Netherlands. Not much is known about this new ship except that she has a steel hull and aluminum superstructure and was designed by Micheal Leach Design with De Voogt handling the naval architecture. Anna is getting her finishing touches at Feadship's facilities in Makkum. So far, so gorgeous.

Feadship Charisma for Charter

Now you know that I can't stand yachts with bad interiors. For a yacht named Charisma, this boat had very little. Charisma underwent a refit several years back and the difference is amazing. If you look for them, pictures of the previous decor are out there, but you may want to gouge your eyes out after viewing them. Luckily for us, the interior bears no resemblance and now is actually on the fabulous side. Outside you have classic Feadship lines and spacious decks. Inside a luxurious decor that evokes a grand Hampton's beach house reigns where motorhome chic was once the theme. At 153 feet, this yacht doesn't skimp for space. 3 decks of living space allow plenty of room for the 12 guests to stretch out and enjoy the great amenities. Based in the Mediterranean and the Bahamas, Charisma can be chartered for $160,000 a week, plus expenses.

Yacht Illusion for Charter

Feadship yachts are probably the most classy and traditional yachts on the water today. Their timeless designs make even older Feadship vessels highly desired and valuable. It's wonderful when classic yachts are refitted and brought up to date and Illusion is a perfect example. The 1983 yacht was overhauled in 2004 with a new interior by Bannenberg Yacht Designers that is absolutely fantastic. The 51 meter yacht hosts 12 guests in complete modern luxury while cruising the Mediterranean or Caribbean.

Utopia Yacht Sold

We've covered the impressive 71-meter Utopia megayacht before and now Edmiston announces that she has been sold. Utopia is the second largest Feadship ever built. She was created in 2004 and carries 12 guests in luxury. Details include owner's deck with a stateroom, study, gym, pantry, lounge and outdoor private Jacuzzi, helicopter platform, a tender garage, three guest suites and two VIP staterooms and room for 20 crew members. No price was given but since she charters for around $436,000 per week it's definitely up there. The yacht will still be available on the charter market.
