Farm Aid Inc., Charity of the Day

Filed under: Charity, Charity of the Day

I live right smack in the middle of the Midwest in Iowa, and with the drastic weather this country has been experiencing (in this area it's excessive rain and flooding) crops are getting destroyed and many farmers are being threatened with the possibility of losing their farms, homes, and livelihoods. Farm Aid Inc. is working to help family farms across the country to stay alive, profitable, and on their land through a variety of efforts, including fund raising concerts from big names like Dave Matthews, John Mellencamp, Willie Nelson, and Counting Crows. Check to see if there's one your area!

Owning Farmland is the New Status Symbol?

Although owning land has always been something of a status symbol, traditionally most of the very wealthy who own acreages don't use them as a permanent address but instead as a getaway spot. For many having money means living a fast-paced jet-setting lifestyle in the city, where spending money and enjoying luxurious amenities like spa treatments and VIP experiences is most convenient. But that trend is reversing, it seems, with many of today's wealthy leaning more and more towards a slower, more comfortable, "back the roots" kind of life. Many are still traveling the world and paying big bucks for daily extravagances, but they're basing their lives out of a calmer and more natural environment. They're buying acreages of farmland and building their homes there, and besides enjoying the serenity and quietness it brings many are actually growing some of their own food and working towards more sustainable and old-fashioned lifestyles. Believe it or not, farmland is becoming the new status symbol!

Fox Hollow Farm, Estate of the Day

To put you in a Christmas state of mind, let's visit the little town of Bethlehem. Bethlehem, Connecticut that is, for a look at Fox Hollow Farm. This adorable post and beam home is on 197 acres of woods and pastures that are probably looking pretty Christmasy right about now. The farmhouse has exposed beams, soaring ceilings and cozy stone fireplaces. The first floor includes the country kitchen, dining room with seating for 20, a large exercise room that has a sauna and a private deck with a hot tub. The listing says that it was built in 2001 but that kitchen oddly looks even older, perhaps its the color. The living room is dominated by a great stone fireplace, unfortunately blemished by the placement of a flatscreen television. There are four bedrooms total including a master suite with a brick fireplace and an office with built in desks and bookshelves. Fox Hollow Farm is also located in one of only three state towns with no zoning, meaning that the property could be used for a corporate retreat, small school, equestrian farm, Inn, restaurant, place of worship or residential development. It is listed at $5.25 million.

Woodstock's Famous Farm For Sale

I am too young to have been a part of Woodstock, but for the 400,000 or so who did attend the 1969 music festival, Max Yasgur's farm in upstate New York is a special place. Roy Howard currently owns the property and after years of wrangling with local officials over reunion permits, he's ready to sell. The asking price is $8 million, but who can put a price on owning such an iconic piece of American history?

The alfalfa field where the actual concert took place is not for sale, but Yasgur's 2,000 square foot house is, along with a larger farmhouse and barn as well as 103 acres of land. The house, located 80 miles north of New York City, comes with a gourmet kitchen with stainless steel appliances, double convection ovens, Viking stove, antique soapstone sink, 22-foot vaulted ceiling and beautiful views of the Pocono Mountains. Also included is a double whirlpool tub, steam shower and a bidet.
