Brilliant Lady 21, How Many Facets Can Fit On One Diamond?

The last time I got all mystified by a diamond cut it was the Movado cut which has 114 facets, now Diamond Vues points out the Brilliant Lady 21 which has a full 221 facets. Compare this with the standard round brilliant cut of 57 or 58 facets. The diamond is being designed and polished near Antwerp and is certified and laser inscribed.

The Brilliant Lady 21 is designed to heighten light reflection and dispersion. The folks behind Brilliant Lady 21 say that "facets produce reflection, a higher number of facets result in increased brilliance." When I checked out the Movado diamond I noticed that while it was sparklier but brilliance is just one of the factors that constitute a diamond's charms.

The Movado Diamond, Are More Facets Worth More Money?

A good cut can sometimes make a subpar diamond more brilliant but how many facets are necessary for maximum brilliance. We've seen a wide variety of facets used in trademarked diamond cuts but the most facets I have heard of used are on The Movado Diamond. Movado, the watch maker, also creates patented and proprietary 114-facet round and square cut diamonds. They say the cut brings out the brilliance and fire of the stone. I've checked these out in the stores and they do throw off a lot of smaller sparkles but they also cost a bit more than other diamonds of a similar size.

The Vinci Diamond

Shlomo Cohen, who is credited with the 1982 development of the Princess Cut diamond, has created a new cut known as the Vinci Diamond. Based on the "divine proportion," a golden ratio that was studied intensely by Leonardo da Vinci, who inspired the diamond's name, the diamond features a 62-facet pentacle cut. By contrast, a standard round-cut diamond has 57-facets. The perfect proportions of the diamond include three pentacle stars and give a stone with this cut unprecedented brilliance. The design is patented in Japan, Israel, Belgium, and the United States, and Cohen already has marketing plans in place.
