Maria Callas Costumes Go On Display In New York

Maria Callas is a bit lost to the current generation but the late opera singer was once one of the world's most glamorous women and she had the closet to prove it. Stage costumes, dresses and jewelry belonging to the passionate diva are on display at the Italian Cultural Institute of New York.

The exhibit titled "A Woman, A Voice, A Myth" features memorabilia and photos gathered by Bruno Tosi, President of Associazione Culturale Maria Callas. The exhibition has toured the world and this event has been organized in collaboration with the Consulate General of Greece-New York , with major support of the Stavros Niarchos Foundation and the Hellenic Parliament Foundation.

Callas, who died in 1977, was born in New York City but received her musical education in Greece and was first famous for her opera singing in Italy where her musical gifts earned her the nickname La Divina. Callas is also famous for her equally dramatic personal life. After a successful career the beautiful diva fell for Greek shipping magnate Aristotle Onassis while she was still married to her husband. She left him for Onassis and the pair were together nine years until Onassis left her for Jacqueline Kennedy.

The exhibit run through March 30 in New York.

Ralph Lauren to Exhibit Car Collection Classics for the First Time

Some of the most precious gems in famed fashion designer Ralph Lauren's incredible car collection will be exhibited for the the first time ever in Paris this spring. Lauren's collection, in our opinion the finest one in private hands on the planet, features impeccable examples of the rarest and most valuable vehicles in the world. We can reveal exclusively that four of his exquisite automotive works of art, which have never before been seen in public, will be on view at the Musée des Arts Décoratifs in Paris from April 28 – August 28: a 1964 Ferrari 250 LM; a 1960 Ferrari 250 GT SWB Berlinetta Scaglietti; a 1956/1958 Jaguar XKSS; and a 1931 Alfa Romeo Monza 8C 2300.

13 other Lauren cars will also be on display during the exhibit, entitled The Art of the Automobile: Masterpieces from the Ralph Lauren Collection, including an amazing 1958 Ferrari 250 Testa Rossa (above), a 1962 Ferrari 250 GTO, and a 1938 Bugatti 57 SC Atlantic Coupé. The last two alone are worth about $30 – $40 million each, and are among the world's most expensive cars. The Paris exhibit will focus on European models created between the 1930s and the 1990s, "illustrating the evolution of car design in the 20th Century." They were selected by curator Rodolphe Rapetti and will be arranged by scenographer Jean-Michel Wilmotte, with the "kinetics" and sound of the vehicles conveyed by means of various films and recordings. The museum will also be producing a luxe book to celebrate the occasion.

Early Works by Edward Hopper Exhibited at Mark Murray Fine Paintings in New York

In conjunction with the Whitney Museum of Art's acclaimed Edward Hopper exhibition, Mark Murray Fine Paintings on Manhattan's Upper East Side is holding an exhibition of original works of art by the groundbreaking Ashcan School artist. All of the works are available for purchase.

Thirty rare early drawings, watercolors and a landscape in oil are on view at the gallery, all of which were formerly in the collection of the artist's widow, Jo Hopper, and subsequently given to the Reverend Arthayor R. Sanborn. Interestingly, Sanborn was a close friend of the Hopper family and served as the minister who officiated at the burial ceremonies for Hopper in 1967.

Mark Murray Fine Paintings' exhibition reveals Hopper's early mastery of drawing, particularly the human form, his fondness for literary sources, and his admiration for the paintings of the Old Masters. A subtle psychology can also be seen taking shape, especially in the many subjects he approached as an illustrator.

Three highlights of this collection include a large and bold drawing depicting the artist's mother, Elizabeth Griffiths Smith Hopper, executed c. 1900; an early landscape in oil titled "Country Road" (1897) (seen above), one of only 32 paintings by Hopper remaining in private hands; and a striking illustration depicting firemen at work titled "Under Control" (1907-10). A selection of drawings from this collection were included in the catalogue for an exhibition titled "The Early Drawings of Edward Hopper" (with an essay by Hopper scholar Gail Levin), held at Kennedy Galleries, New York in 1995.

Champagne Ruinart Stages Exhibit at The Betsy for Art Basel

During Art Basel in Miami, luxe hotel The Betsy South Beach is playing host to the works of ten emerging artists commissioned by Ruinart, the world's oldest champagne House, established in 1729. The exhibition kicks off today highlighting a commitment to the arts from both organizations. Ruinart, the official champagne of Art Basel Miami Beach, combed the country seeking talent for the exhibition and selected ten artists considered among the most creative and innovative in their mediums. Their works were produced using classic and avant-garde techniques, in a variety of mediums, including photography, painting and sculpture. Artists were inspired by many facets of the famed champagne, from Ruinart's unique bottle shape to the history of its creator Dom Ruinart. The series of unique works will ultimately be auctioned in New York to benefit the non-profit organization The Art of Elysium.

Exhibition A, A New Way To Buy Contemporary Art

The world of fast sales has come to contemporary art with Exhibition A, a new online platform for buying and collecting contemporary art. launches later this month and will feature open edition, limited release works by artists including Terence Koh, David LaChapelle, Richard Phillips, Nate Lowman, Rene Ricard, Josephine Meckseper, Mark Borthwick, and Hanna Liden. Pieces will be available for purchase for $100 to $500 and all works will be exclusive to Exhibition A with select editions available for purchase also at the Gagosian shop on Madison Avenue. Each piece will be available only for two weeks and then never offered again. The Exhibition A website will also feature editorial content, including commentary and interviews. The company was started in part by the husband-and-wife team of Bill Powers, Half Gallery owner and judge on Bravo's Work of Art, and designer Cynthia Rowley.

Megabucks Rothko, Warhol & Bacon Head Sotheby's Sale

A $30 million Mark Rothko, $25 million Andy Warhol, $18 million Roy Lichtenstein and $10 million Francis Bacon will headline Sotheby's stunning Contemporary Art sale in New York on Nov. 9. Though the least expensive of the top four lots the Bacon, 1985's Figure in Movement (above), is our favorite among the offerings. Bacon gave the painting to his personal physician, Dr. Paul Brass, and the sale marks it's historic first appearance to market. It featured prominently in the 2008 landmark exhibition Francis Bacon: A Centenary Retrospective at Tate Britain which traveled to the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. The Rothko, 1955's Untitled, is one of the artist's most monumental works measuring over 7.5 ft. high. Warhol's contribution is 1962's Coca-Cola, not particularly compelling but guaranteed to ride the wave of high prices realized for his work. The Lichtenstein, Ice Cream Soda, is also dated 1962 and has been in a private collection since it was originally purchased that same year.

New Lichtenstein Monograph Marks Milan Exhibit

An impressive new monograph on the late pop art star Roy Lichtenstein has just been published by Skira on the occasion of a major new exhibition of his work at the Milan Triennial, the most important show ever devoted to the artist in Italy. Roy Lichtenstein: Meditations on Art covers his entire artistic development through more than 250 paintings and sculptural works, a rich photographic section including unpublished material, and critical text. In keeping with the theme of the exhibition, the book examines the relationship between Lichtenstein, art history and its protagonists. There's also a refreshing emphasis on some of his lesser-known work. The reproductions in this deluxe edition, priced at $100, are large-format and in full color. Thirteen years after the legendary artist's death, his works and lexicon of symbols, subjects and themes continue to intrigue the art world while his work fetches millions of dollars at auction.

Lagerfeld Photography Exhibition to Open in Paris

An exhibition of photographs by Chanel kingpin Karl Lagerfeld is opening in Paris this September in time for the city's Fashion Week. The show at the Maison Européenne de la Photographie in the historic heart of Paris will feature a mix of fashion photos, portraits, landscapes, architectural images and personal shots, including several of his longtime muse, Claudia Schiffer. Lagerfeld, who shoots all of Chanel's ad campaigns himself, has published several books of his photographs, and has his own art book publishing imprint and book shop in Paris called 7L.

"What I admire most is the photographers who have gone down to posterity with a single image," the designer tells La Parisienne. "An image - I prefer this word to the word picture - which went down in the collective memory of the civilized world [... ]. Today the picture is part of my life. It closes the circle of my artistic and professional lives. I look at the fashion world with the eye of the camera. This gives my work a basic critical detachment that helps more than I would have suspected." The exhibition runs from September 10 to October 15.

Celebrating the Hudson River's Rich Heritage

A number of American artists and writers have contributed to Lives of the Hudson, a compelling new book on the artistic, literary, and environmental history of the Hudson River from Prestel. The site of stunning historic estates like Astor Courts and Marienruh, the river is much more than mere scenery. The companion volume to an exhibition of the same name staged at Skidmore College in Saratoga Springs, the book explores the river's complex history via sections entitled The Natural River, The Imagined River, The Human River, and The Working River. Along with important works by famed Hudson River School painters such as Albert Bierstadt and Thomas Cole, the book features literary contributions from the likes of Rick Moody, Carolyn Forche, Philip Lopate and others. Cultural artifacts provide a fascinating background of the river's many lives while contemporary artwork asks us to "reconsider our use of the river and our relationship with nature and history."

An Homage to Edward Hopper

To accompany a major new European traveling exhibition at the Palazzo Reale in Milan, Fondazione Roma Museo in Rome and Fondation de l'Hermitage in Lausanne, Skira has released a massive new monograph on famed American artist Edward Hopper. Illustrated with over 150 oils, watercolors, etchings, and drawings with critical comments on their formal and technical characteristics, topics include Hopper's European travels and his love of movies that influenced his work in various ways, his early work as an illustrator and printmaker, and his process of drawing versus painting. Among the artworks included are Cape Cod Sunset, Second Story Sunlight (shown on the book's cover, above) and several self-portraits from the Whitney Museum of American Art; the famous Morning Sun from the Columbus Museum of Art, Ohio, and a number of lesser-known watercolors and oils from Hopper's journeys to Paris. Also included are essays by several noted scholars, and an extensive chronology and bibliography.

Designer Kenzo Exhibits Paintings

Designer Kenzo Takada started painting ten years ago after he sold his Kenzo label to luxury goods company LVMH. Now he's showing off the fruits of his work at the Studio 55 gallery in Paris. The small exhibition of eight works feature the Japanese-born designer in a series of flower-printed kimonos. Kenzo is a also a collector of Asian art, furniture and antique kimonos. The exhibit runs through July 10.

The Classicist: Celebrating Persol's Iconic Style

This week legendary Italian eyewear brand Persol, a bastion of Dolce Vita style, is debuting its iconic INCOGNITO design exhibition in the U.S. at the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York. The invitation-only opening night celebration will feature a performance by Lou Reed.

Running from June 24 - 28, INCOGNITO by Persol is an interactive exhibition that was designed to "bring to life the emotions and richness" of a heritage born nearly 90 years ago in Turin, Italy and which today remains an icon of Italian design and craftsmanship.

Persol made its big screen debut in 1961 worn by Marcello Mastroianni in Divorce Italian Style, and its U.S. film debut in 1968 worn by Steve McQueen in The Thomas Crown Affair (right). Two of the most stylish stars in the history of cinema, they catapulted the brand onto the international scene.

Other stars who have worn Persols over the years include Jack Nicholson, Richard Gere, Paul Newman, Roberto Rossellini, Cindy Crawford, Nicolas Cage, Pierce Brosnan, Brad Pitt, Angelina Jolie, Christian Slater, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Heath Ledger, Al Pacino, George Clooney, Adrien Brody and Daniel Craig, who sported two different styles in Casino Royale.

Breguet Timepiece Exhibit June 25 - September 7 At The Louvre Museum In Paris

This is something you should certainly see if you are in, or going to be in Paris at the right time. Breguet watches will be having a special exhibition at the splendid Louvre museum in Paris, France from June 25 until September 7, 2009. The special exhibit is will be known as the "Apogee of Watch Making" a pretty lofty title, for what is essentially a history of Breguet, but what a history it is! Abraham-Louis Breguet is often known as the father of modern watch making. A lot of what he developed in his lifespan in the latter half of the 18th century (up to 1823) is still used in many of today's luxury wrist watches, even though he never made a wrist watch during his life (just clocks and pocket watches). The exhibit will showcase historical pocket watches and clocks, watch making tools, art, and historical documents and watch-related patents. Breguet watches were, and are today extremely inventive and also beautiful. They are probably the "favorite-child brand" of Nicolas Hayek, leader of the Swatch Group that has Breguet under its brand umbrella. The exhibit of course was helped by a generous contribution from Breguet to the Louvre.

European Gallery Brings Tire Art Back To New York City Gallery

It wouldn't seem to be the best time to open an art gallery in New York City but that's not stopping European art dealership Hauser & Wirth. The company, which has galleries in Zurich and London will open in New York in September. As ArtInfo reports the building at 32 East 69th Street, currently home to Zwirner & Wirth (and Hauser & Wirth's private American office) will hold a four-story gallery and event space.

President and owner Iwan Wirth told ArtInfo that he's not too worried about the current economic climate saying that "we have almost always opened our galleries in difficult economic moments" and pointing out that he opened the London gallery in 2002–03, after the 9/11 tragedy and resulting economic decline.

The opening exhibition will be Yard, which looks at an environment piece first made in 1961 by Allan Kaprow, the American painter and pioneer of performance art known as the inventor of 'Happenings.' More than forty years ago, he filled the backyard of a Manhattan townhouse with rubber auto tires heaped randomly for viewers to climb in and around. That work was Yard and the townhouse,which was then home to the Martha Jackson Gallery and is the new site of Hauser & Wirth New York.

'YARD' at Hauser & Wirth New York will be curated by Helen Molesworth, head of the Department of Modern and Contemporary Art and the James R. and Maisie K. Houghton Curator of Contemporary Art at the Harvard Art Museums, working with the Estate of Allan Kaprow. It will include documentation and "archival elements" (does this mean tires?), and will be accompanied by a program of activities at Hauser & Wirth New York and other locations to be announced. After Yard, Hauser & Wirth New York will present exhibitions featuring Paul McCarthy, Ida Applebroog and Eva Hesse.
