In the Bedroom with Dolce & Gabbana

The world's top fashionistas spend their lives designing things for other people, but they often reserve their true talents for themselves. A glimpse into their personal lives - and not in the tabloid sense - often reveals more about their real sensibilities and style than their runway creations, which are often masked by more commercial concerns.

Marie Bariller's gorgeous new book, Dressing the Home: The Private Spaces of Top Fashion Designers affords a rare glimpse at the interior lives (so to speak) of some of the biggest names in fashion. Included are two houses owned by Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana, who wrote the introduction to the book, and who describe their aesthetic as "luxury that combines romanticism with irony, always executed with care and professionalism."

We also get to see where style stars like Christian Louboutin, Gilles Mendel, Jacopo Etro, Catherine Malandrino, Patrick Cox, Betsey Johnson, and Diane von Furstenberg, among others, hang their hats. As you might expect, they're pretty talented at dressing their homes as well.

Etro Leather Hobo, Handbag of the Day

Christmas is over as far as online retailers are concerned and the post-holiday clearances are already beginning. Browsing through the selection at eLuxury, I spotted this gorgeous Etro Leather Hobo. Basic black on the outside with a bright teal satin lining, the bag is one that you can wear with anything, from jeans to a suit. It is large, measuring 17" x 9.25" x 7.5", and is accented with two teardrop-shaped links on the wide, flat shoulder strap. Price: $659 (orig. $995).

Etro Multi Patch Weekender, Handbag of the Day

If you were traveling for the Thanksgiving holiday, you've probably covered at least half the distance of your trip if you're not already home by now, so the Etro Multi Patch Weekender probably won't be helpful right now, although it could still be useful for any traveling later in the holiday season. The funky bag is made of wool and corduroy with brown and orange leather trim, leather handles and a canvas shoulder strap. It has two expandable front pockets and a zip top closure, so it can hold quite a bit. It measures 18.5" x 12" x 6.5" unfilled, but could expand a bit more if you really needed to squeeze a few extra holiday gifts in. Price: $1,300.

Etro Red, White and Blue Canvas Satchel, Handbag of the Day

With beautiful red, white and blue colors, this Etro Canvas Satchel might be a good choice for the 4th of July in particular, but it can certainly be used for the rest of the season, if not longer. The linen-canvas bag has leather accents embossed with either crocodile or lizard prints. Accented with gold hardware, the bag has rolled leather handles, protective metal feet and two clasp-closing front pockets. Rather than the open interiour of most totes, this one is divided into three compartments, one of which is a zipped pocket in the center. The bag closes with a magnetic snap that is located on a concealed inside flap. The best part is that the bag is on sale at half price for $529.

Etro Weekend Bag, Father's Day Gift of the Day

We know that a lot of father's are planning to take vacations with (or from) their families this summer, so a weekend tote, like Etro's Signature Weekend Bag would make an excellent Father's Day gift. The bag is made of a water-resistant canvas - useful for beach trips - with a dark brown paisley pattern and a leather trim in brown, blue and lime. The accent colors make this bag very easy to spot on a luggage carousel if he checks it while flying. The shoulder strap is removable and adjusts from 12.75" to 25" and the body of the bag measures 21.5" x 13" x 8.5." A zip top closure and a zip front pocket will secure all the travel essentials, from socks to toiletries. Of course, Dad will probably appreciate it even more if there are a couple of plane tickets tucked inside, too. Price: $680.

Etro Western Floral Pony Satchel

Western is hot, especially when it comes to shoes and handbags. Bags with buckles are still at the top of the fashionista's must-have list, though, so the fusion of the two trends would create the perfect bag. At least, that's what the designers at Etro were telling themselves. They have a penchant for pushing the limits of design, so it is no surprise that they came up with the Western Floral Pony Satchel. The busy bag is soft brown snakeskin leather, glazed red in spots and embossed with flowers, trimmed with a spotted pony pattern. It is adorned with antiqued silver spurs, studs and buckles, accented with yellow leather ribbons and has a purple satin interior. I can't make up my mind as to whether I love it or hate it, but I definitely can't tear my eyes away. Price: $1,450.

Etro Beaded Leather Drawstring Bag

Etro's design team is constantly going beyond their creativity limits, sometimes to the point where you have to ask yourself, 'what were they thinking?'. But regardless of what they come up with, you have to appreciate their artwork and dedication to mixing colors and patterns that other designers would shy away from. Etro's Beaded Leather Drawstring Bag is one of their more tame designs, but nonetheless, still funky. Made of soft calfskin leather, it features brown alligator trim and purple leather piping. The interior is lined with lime green silk. Although there are multiple colors used, they are quite complimenting to one another and to your outfit. The delicate shade of yellow and beautifully crafted beading makes this bag perfect for the Spring. You have to love the attention paid to detail! Price: $2,050.

Etro Arnica Two Pocket Satchel

Over at Etro they certainly love color. Some of their latest bags for spring combine their classic paisley-print coated canvas with bright croc-embossed leather trim and patchwork leather straps. There is color everywhere you look, from the edging of the flap pockets to the the zipper. It's even colorful inside, it's lined with a lime green fabric. The riot of colors says youthful but the style of the bag itself is almost dowdy. It sells for $780.
