$8.5 Million Waterfront Home in Vancouver, Estate of the Day

vancouver home
With all the press Vancouver has received lately with the Olympic Games I would think a waterfront property there would be one hot item! Although I have to say I was a bit surprised that the $8.5 million home only offered three bedrooms and four baths. Nestled in a gated private community boasting outrageous ocean and island views and a private outdoor pool brings the value up rather quickly though.

At 5351 Seaside Place in Olde Caulfeild, West Vancouver this spacious contemporary home designed by renowned architect Russell Hollingsworth features a courtyard entry complete with reflecting pond and stone walls, a gourmet chef's kitchen, polished marble flooring, media room and private boat launch. The use of floor-to-ceiling sliding doors and large picture windows bring the stunning outdoor view inside.

The Castle in Beaufort, Estate of the Day

It doesn't really look much like a castle but that's the name attached to today's estate, a historic mansion in Beaufort, South Carolina's Old Point neighborhood. The Greek Revival home was built around 1859 and sits on the intracoastal waterway and is surrounded by live oaks and old gardens. The listing states that the home recently underwent a major restoration that included a new gourmet kitchen with Sub-Zero refrigerator, Wolf gas stove, Meile dishwasher and an additional ground floor catering kitchen with dual full size Sub-zero wine coolers. The bathrooms have been spruced up with Calcutta gold marble and Waterworks fixtures and the home has a new roof and new HVAC.

It's the old features that attract here, the original wood flooring, the double verandas and the sweeping center hall with a double staircase large enough to flounce down in an antebellum gown. There are six bedrooms and approximatley 7932 square feet of living area. A Forbes report on the house from 2006, when it was listed at $4.5 million, states that the home is haunted by a ghost. And not just any ghost, a dwarf named Grenauche which only appears to sick children. This home is now listed at $3.95 million.

Jasmine's Cove, Estate of the Day

I'm not usually a fan of nautical. I grew up in a resort town, ship's wheels and rope decor generally make me itch. Today's estate in Lake Country, British Columbia could change my mind. This home combines a nautical theme with modern architecture and the overall effect is worlds away from the local fish shack. This six-bedroom home has a great room with a huge round window, a canoe seems poised to smash through the center. A curved bar continues the nautical theme and a shower enclosure is designed to mimic the ocean floor, complete with fish. The property also has a beachside cabana, water features, bridges of stepping stones and an outdoor kitchen. It is listed at $10 million Canadian.

Estate of the Day: Turks and Caicos

Filed under: Estates, Real Estate Developments

Fantasy island-wise, they had me at "Turks and Caicos" -- islands in the British West Indies that I visited in my youth and now fearfully refuse to return to lest they have changed. Then lo and behold, into my inbox comes this: A chance to own -- at least partially -- the 12,000-square-foot Coral House estate that sits squarely on Grace Bay Beach, voted by Conde Nast Traveler as one of the top 10 beaches in the world. My heart be still.

The luxury residence, which sits on nearly an acre of white powdery sand, has five bedrooms, two living rooms, a family room with a large flat screen TV and a library for all that mindless beach-reading you'll want to do.

But the devil -- the one who could lure me back to the Turks -- is in the details: The home has stunning coral render flooring with glass tile inlays, Brazilian hardwood doors, antique wrought-iron gates imported from Saudi Arabia, France and Egypt and furnished with antiques and one-of-a-kind designer pieces.

The estate is being sold in fractional interests, starting at $1.1 million for four weeks of use. Since we're fantasizing here, we won't get bogged down in the fine print, but basically 13 shares are being offered which guarantee four weeks of use a year and the opportunity to trade usage in other Elan Collection properties if desired.

The residence, constructed from coral stone blocks imported from Barbados, features an outdoor covered breakfast nook and an outdoor beachfront dining pergola with an area for a table setting of 30. There is a one-bedroom guest cottage with its own pool and garden and separate two-bedroom staff quarters. The central courtyard is filled with mature giant frangipani trees, bougainvillea, ferns and other lush landscaping. For those who misplaced their atlas, the Turks and Caicos are a territory of the United Kingdom consisting of two groups of more than 40 islands and cays, eight of which are inhabited. The island chain is known for its pristine white sand beaches, turquoise waters and legendary diving, snorkeling and fishing activities

French Countryside Style In Montecito, Estate of the Day

If you love the charming look of the French countryside but aren't ready to move abroad, this estate in Montecito, California offers a chance to experience a more European style while safely ensconced in the land of blue skies and celebrity neighbors. The garden is surrounded by a 45-acre nature preserve and 45 acre estate for added privacy and the house belongs to the association of Ennisbrook which means that the owners have access to amenities that include clubhouses, pools and tennis courts.

The house is only ten years old but was designed with an eye toward creating a slice of the French countryside. The two acre property includes a large single-level main house, a separate guest house and garage that create a courtyard. The main house and guest house have high ceilings, lime washed walls and handmade tile floors updated with one comfort you usually won't find in Provence, radiant heat. The gourmet kitchen has an attached loggia for indoor-outdoor living. Listing pictures reveal a magical landscape with bridges, ponds, cottages and what appears to be a rather fancy aviary. Another thing that sets this one apart is vines. Vines crawl the outside of the structures which isn't that unusual but in this case it looks like the vines have come inside sprawling across the ceiling in . The effect is charming but you still might want to bring your pruning shears or have a gardener on staff. This home is listed at $7.5 million with Sotheby's.

George Stephanopoulos and Ali Wentworth In Washington, D.C., Estate of the Day

Just a few weeks ago we learned that George Stephanopoulos bought a home in East Hampton, N.Y., for $3.5 million. Now comes news that the Good Morning America co-host and his actress wife Ali Wentworth have listed their five-bedroom home on 31st Street Northwest in Washington D.C. The telegenic pair have a designer five-bedroom home that has graced the pages of Elle Decor. The Real Estalker sniffed out the property records finding that they paid $5.2 million for the home back in 2006.

The Georgian Revival home was built in 1907. Interior designer Elizabeth Martin whipped an interior that combines classic decor with pops of whimsey and color. The Real Estalker Mama didn't seem to be wild about the look but I think it does a nice job of combining the personalities of the couple, the more serious and cerebral husband and the equally smart but more whimsical wife. The family room's sedate brown paneled walls get a lift from bookshelves lined in orange and a spider-like overhead light. The home has a sunny but narrow kitchen with a huge television where one might expect an oven hood. This home is listed at $6.35 million.

Sea Cliff, Estate of the Day

Some of the listing pics on today's Maine estate could be turned into postcards, they're that pretty. Sea Cliff commands a rocky outpost on Cape Elizabeth. The shingled home was built in 1915 and has four bedrooms. Large windows and decks offer views of the shipping channel and Portland Head Light. The rooms are large and gracious and many have their original brick fireplaces. This home was listed at $5.995 million a couple of years ago but now sits at $4.75 million.

Vince Clarke in Surrey, Estate of the Day

Today's estate combines two of my favorite things, round houses and 1980s music. This home in Surrey, England belongs to musician Vince Clarke, a founding member of iconic 1980s synth-pop bands Depeche Mode, Yaz and Erasure. According to the Wall Street Journal's Hot Properties, Clarke had the home built in 1990 and it was designed by architect John Newton. The three-bedroom home sits on 5.6 acres. Features include a sitting room with games area, open plan dining room and a circular kitchen that overlooks the lower ground floor with indoor swimming pool. There is a separate building on the property which was used as a recording studio but could be turned into a gym. It is listed at £1.995 million.

132 East 62nd Street, Estate of the Day

Back in October we first heard that Suzanne Sheik, a jewelry designer and mother of singer Duncan Sheik, had put her New York City townhouse on the market for $17.5 million. Now the home has had a $2 million price chop so I decided to check it out as an estate of the day. Sheik bought the 7,000-square-foot townhouse at 132 East 62nd Street from the estate of late socialite Phyllis Cerf Wagner for $8.5 million in 2007.

The home is a 20-foot-wide residence spanning five stories. In the last couple of years it has gone through a major restoration adding state of the art appliances and updating the home with a modern but elegant look. The townhouse was built in 1871 by architect John Sexton and is part of the Upper East Side Historic District. The listing says that the bookshelves still hold literary treasures signed and annotated by authors such as: Faulkner Mailer, Capote, and Didion many of whom visited the house when Phyllis Cerf Wagner was in residence as did other famous guests like Judy Garland and Frank Sinatra (the home currently features an abstract oil painting by Frank Sinatra).

The main entrance opens to a foyer with carrera marble floors and glazed walls while the service entrance has wood floors, a mud room and leads into the pantry. The ground floor includes a chef's kitchen and a living/dining area that opens to a serene garden with water wall. The original staircase has been reinforced and leads to a floor with a drawing room, den and a street facing library/dining room. The third floor is given over to a master suite that includes a dressing room and a paneled study with a fireplace. The fourth floor offers two bedrooms, kitchenette and laundry and the fifth floor has three more bedrooms and a sitting room. Some of the furniture and fine art is available for purchase separately. This home is now listed with Stribling at $15.5 million.

Mississippi River Retreat, Estate of the Day

Need a lot of space? Today's home in Memphis, Tennessee has it. The former cotton warehouse on Front Street has been converted into three separate apartments plus the main living quarters over four stories. The home has over 22,000 square feet of space, room for a three-car drive through garage, a full gym, a pub with a 25-foot custom bar, conservatory, library, caterer's kitchen and a media room. It also has its own rooftop pool and outdoor lounging area with fabulous views over the Mississippi River. An elevator connects all floors. Some of the home retains just enough of its industrial origin for a touch of rough charm while others seem more suburban than urban. But oh the views from that pool. This building is listed at $5 million.

Today's home in Boulder, Colorado has quite the history. It was built in the early 1900s as one of the first historic churches in Boulder and was later a monastery. Now it has had a total revamp that includes new plumbing and wiring to turn it into a unique six-bedroom residence. It has a home automation system that uses a central control to monitor security and change security status, control all climate set points and manipulate the audio and video in one or all rooms. The Victorian brick building includes a gym, media room, library and more. Beamed ceilings and large windows reflect the building's origins giving this one a really distinctive look. It is listed at $4.695 million.
