The Scorpion Hybrid Supercar

It's red, it's sleek, it's the Scorpion from the newly formed Ronn Motor Company. It's main features include the fact that it goes from 0-60 in 3.5 seconds and gets 40 mpg. So what's so special about that? How about the fact that it's also a hydrogen burning hybrid?

I'm no mechanic (couldn't be farther from it, actually) but the description on AutoblogGreen of how the engine works is really interesting. This car sounds like a really satisfying way to satisfy both a need for speed and an interest in preserving the planet (too bad it looks like a refurbished Viper).

The Scorpion will be manufactured in Texas and should be available to consumers this fall.

Green Pet Homes from Sustainable Pet

It's all about being green lately, and if you're like many people you probably even made a New Years resolution this year that had something to do with being friendlier to the environment. Green Pet Homes from Sustainable Pet can help you (and your pet) be greener while not sacrificing in the beauty or style departments. I do a lot of container gardening so I'm loving these pet houses/garden combinations -- very earthy and natural without looking cheap or shabby. Not to mention it's always nice to have fresh herbs in the kitchen! $1000-$6000.

The Flatpack Christmas Tree

I'm all for live, green, piney-smelling needle-dropping Christmas trees myself, but if you're not then this Flatpack Christmas Tree might be an interesting option. I'm not sure what kind of home decor this sort of tree would look best in -- I'm thinking something contemporary, but it's awfully plain and unexciting looking. And how do you decorate it? I have to say I think it makes one ugly Christmas tree, but as a general decor item it could be really cool. Available from Büro North in 3 sizes ranging from 1' to 7.5' it may be eco-friendly but that doesn't mean it's cheap: $1414 for the full-sized version.

Hotels Get Creative While Going Green

There have always been lots of things to consider when making traveling plans, and these days there's at least one more thing to add to the list: how "green" is the hotel you plan to stay in?

Thankfully, with more and more hotels going green in recent years it's getting easier to find somewhere to stay that's environmentally friendly. Some things, like encouraging guests to reuse towels to installing low-flow shower heads, are getting to be fairly standard efforts. But others are getting a little more creative with things like:
  • Putting designer recycle bins in individuals rooms
  • Switching to all organic menus
  • Offering incentives to employees who carpool to work
  • Routing undrinkable water to irrigate nearby golf courses
  • Offering parking incentives to guests who drive hybrid vehicles
  • Switching to non-toxic and organic cleaning supplies
  • Donating unused amenity bottles to local charities
  • Sending half-used bars of soap to companies who use them to make cleaning products
  • Recycling used coffee grounds as golf course tee-off mounds.

Kitano Kite Sailing Yacht

Now here's a yacht that will catch an eye or two, plus blow your hair back and give you a thrill. Not to oversimplify things, but it's basically a yacht with a kite instead of a sail. The kite principle takes advantage of the greater and more consistent wind speeds found at higher altitudes, raising the boat to planing speeds and making sailing in the shallows and littorals a realistic option.

And on top of everything else the Kitano Kite Sailing Yacht is environmentally-friendly, so us "greenies" can indulge our love of the water guilt free.

The Best Green Hotels

The principle of a hotel being truly environmentally friendly, especially a nice one, is a concept that is largely debatable. But if you believe in appreciating baby steps, and spend time traveling, this list of the top ten greenest hotels might be of interest.

The encouraging part is that many hotels and resorts are getting away from "token" efforts and going for certifiable measures like recycling and high-efficiency water and lighting systems. Some hotels are better at being green than others, going 100% solar or wind powered, or recycling waste water. But you can do your part, too, no matter where you stay: tell housekeeping you don't need fresh sheets and towels every day, keep your shades drawn to help with temperature control, and don't throw away the left-overs from the mini shampoos and soaps they give you -- take them with you and use them up.

Building 'Green' in a Big Way: The EcoManor

With global warming becoming such an unavoidably huge issue, pretty much everybody has a soft spot for all things "eco." But that being said, not everybody takes it quite as far as Ted Turner's daughter, Laura Turner Seydel, and her husband did when they decided to built the biggest environmentally friendly home in the United States, the EcoManor.

It wasn't cheaper to build, although with features like recycled water from the showers irrigating the drought-resistant lawn, and rainwater-filled toilets, it will be cheaper to maintain -- 80 to 90 percent cheaper than other homes of similar size in the area. And with beautiful white linen wallpaper (made of recycled newspaper, of course) and natural lighting via solar tubes, the Seydels didn't have to sacrifice any style while they were doing their part to help the environment.
