Zanotta Tod Occasional Table

Intended as a coffee table, the Zanotta Tod Occasional Table is really a blend of coffee table and end table, with maybe a little touch of 'TV tray' thrown in for good measure. Shaped conveniently to slip right up next to the couch or stand freely and impress from a distance, it has a very modern and sophisticated design. Finished in a glossy lacquer over a polypropylene frame it's available in a variety of bold colors to fit your home scheme. And although I like the white, it reminds a little of something found in a restroom -- I think I'd choose a different shade. £490

Too Peace Table

The Too Peace Table is a balancing act, it's two pieces maintaining the perfect angle needed to support it. Don't be fooled by the delicate look, though: there is actually a small stainless steel leg behind the solid wooden base that makes this table as sturdy as you could need it to be. The table is available in solid ebonized oak (pictured), which would be a good choice for a modern black/white themed room, or solid cherry, for something warmer. The tabletop is solid glass. Prices: $1,600 (oak); $1,800 (cherry).

Somerset Table

From Williams-Sonoma Home, the Somerset Table is a lovely piece that can be used almost anywhere in the house, as it could be used as a nightstand, where the shelves could be used to store books and other things you might like to have to hand, or as an end table in a living room. The pillar-shaped piece is made of Patagonian maple and has a marble top. Twin doors on the side swing open with antiqued brass knobs, revealing an interior shelf, which is removable if you need a larger space for storage. It measures 18 1/4" across and is 28" high. Price: $950 each, $1,800 for two.

Fromage Side Table

Cheese is a hot item right now, with more upscale restaurants offering cheese courses in addition to dessert than ever before, so the cheese-lover is already in heaven when he or she goes out to eat. Now, cheese can be used as more than just food. It can be used to decorate the home without looking, well, cheesy. The Fromage Side Table is a sleek piece of solid walnut carved to resemble Swiss Cheese. It could just be the ultimate cheese board, in a very literal way, although you will have to watch what you set on it.

Full Bodied Cabinet

This cabinet is definitely a must-have for a wine lover. Wine barrels are often discarded after a few years of use, but this one was reworked into a great cabinet/end table. The barrel stands just over three feet high and has a door that opens to one side, revealing an inner storage shelf and plenty of space for just about anything that needs storing. On top of the white oak barrel is a removable maple serving tray, so the barrel can be used as a serving station at a party, as well as as a simple storage device. Price: $850.

Radiant Disc Table

Looking for a more unusual table that really makes a statement? This Radiant Disc Table from Steuben Glass is made of crystal and bronze, inspired by the "textures and organic forms of the ocean reef" according to designer Michele Oka Doner. The legs of the table are reminiscent of coral, projecting to the crystal surface of the table, which resembles a pool full of slight ripples. It would make a beautiful end table or, though it stands only 20.5" high, a stand for a lamp because the light would reflect off its surface so beautifully. Price: $23,000.

Nesting Trapezoid Tables

Nesting tables are appearing in more and more homes. Not only are they stylish, but they are space saving, as an additional table can simply be pulled out when it is needed and tucked away when it is not. These Nesting Trapezoids from Garnet Hill are more interesting than most because of their very geometric shape. The practicality of the tables combined with their contemporary look makes them appropriate for any room. Sold in a set of four, they are available in two colors: natural (pictured) and chocolate. Price: $285.
