EMUs New Water-Resistant Boots Make a Splash

Filed under: Apparel, Shoes, Luxury Shopping

I have nursed my faithful pair of tan sheepskin boots through three years of rain, visits to the snow and -- since I live in southern California where we wear our boots for reasons of style over substance most days -- blistering heat. And sadly, they are now of retirement age -- long ago losing their shape, their sheen, their very high coolness factor sacrificed to the elements. And at the risk of sounding like someone who casts aside an old friend in favor of the new kid on the block, I am doing precisely that: UGGs, begone. Make room for my new EMUs, which have already passed the -- get this -- water test.

A sheepskin boot, warm and cozy on the inside and covered with the smoothest suede-like leather on God's green Earth -- and they are waterproof?? OK, water-resistant, but the company has submerged them in water and out they came looking good as new, which makes them waterproof in my book. Bring on the El Ninos. Mammoth Mountain ski area, here we come. The leather didn't dry or crack. The color deepened, but in a weathery happy way. The shape kept. I'm sold.

Fashion Week Style Off the Runway

While designers from Bryant Park to Chelsea defined our trends over the next season, we found a few cues of inspiration off the runway. Check out the easy looks here for ways on incorporating tomorrow's top New York Fashion Week looks into your wardrobe today.

BiCoastal Style

While the week was all about our dear New York, a few out-of-towners managed to get their collections in the limelight. We enjoyed the new SuperTrash collection, which premiered at Landmarc, Columbus Circle, from Creative Director Olcay Gulsen, whose sleek silhouettes are entirely wearable on both coasts. SuperTrash fans range from Victoria Beckham to Rachel Bilson, and are remarkable for their refined style and high quality materials. "I started SuperTrash in 2004," Gulsen told Luxist. "And it was for this whole new generation of girls who were strong and independent and starting their careers and being who they were and not being ashamed of it." To get an easy idea of the look, the Supertrash woman is someone who pairs rich, textured leggings with a divine wool jacket. "That is the complete lifestyle of SuperTrash," said Gulsen. "Just travel all around the world, have a great time, and be proud."

Carved and Sculpted Eggs

Carved Dragon Ostrich Egg: $500Forgo those cheap plastic eggs that seem to be overflowing supermarket shelves in the weeks before Easter and satisfy your craving for the seasonal egg-shapes with something that will last. Real eggs of various sizes can be carved and sculpted into a variety of surprising shapes and astonishingly beautiful patterns. Ron Cheruka, the "Egg Man", has been doing egg art for many years and uses modified dental tools with carbide and diamond bits to hand cut every egg that he makes. He uses ostrich, rhea, emu and standard eggs in his work. The emu eggs are visually stunning due to the natural pigments in the shells, which range from teal to black, but the nearly cantaloupe-sized ostrich eggs are the most spectacular. Their thick shells allow for the most detailed carvings, like the dragon pictured here, and the finished egg resembles polished ivory. Dragon Egg Price: $500.
