Dinosaur Nest Sets Auction Record

For some buyers, "antique" just isn't old enough. A Bonhams and Butterfields auction set a new record for a 65 million-year-old dinosaur nest that was sold yesterday. The raptoid nest was in excellent condition and contained 22 unhatched eggs - most of which were incredibly well preserved. The final price was nearly $420,000. As usual, the buyer will remain anonymous, but there must be more than a few museum curators hoping to get it donated to their collections.

Belle/Bon Egg Cup & Spoon

Soft boiled eggs are not at the height of breakfast food fashion at the moment, but anyone who enjoys toast and eggs in the morning will tell you that it is hard to beat the runny yolk of a soft boiled egg. To properly dip the toast, the egg must be held upright in a little cup and this Belle/Bon Egg Cup even comes with a small spoon for scooping out the egg. The set, which includes the cup and spoon together, was designed by Konstantin Grcic and is made of hand-painted porcelain in blue, yellow, green, grey, pink or black. Price: $400.

Ostrich Egg Jug

The Ostrich Egg Jug is for the hostess who has it all. It is made from a real ostrich egg, with sterling silver spout, handle and base. The concept came from the fact that some tribes in South Africa used the giant birds' shells to carry water for thousands of years, taking advantage of their impressively sturdy build. The jug measures 7.75" x 4.75" and can one egg's worth of water or other liquid, or about 60-ounces. Price: $385.

Lux List: Favorite Egg-cellent Items

Designers love eggs. Eggs have beautiful, clean lines and a great shape. The egg shape is perfectly symmetrical when cut vertically, but has a soft slope that draws the eye along its curves when viewed as a whole. Egg shapes can and do appear just about anywhere anwhere, in both small and large sizes. We've noticed this, as egg-shapes have come up repeatedly on Luxist, but we still have our favorites. Let's face it: some egg designs work better than others.  These are some of the good ones:

Vivian Alexander Egg Purses - These novel purses are made out of real Rhea egg shells. They are enameled and decorated to perfection by hand with a variety of precious and semi-precious stones. The interior of the purses are lined with silk and they retail from $1000-7000. The Chanticleer Purse, pictured, costs $2,875.

La Maison du Chocolat Easter Creations

I'm not sure why clowns are associated with Easter but the latest creations from La Maison du Chocolat have re-imagined Easter with a circus theme. Their boutiques are selling these two clown figures plus the Magical Egg which is filled with ganache and praline chocolates. Also in their boutiques they are selling an Easter dessert of a pistachio biscuit base covered with apricot, chocolate mousse, a layer of genoise and then brushed with apricot syrup.  For those of us not close to a boutique (Paris, London, New York and Tokyo) they are also selling an egg-shaped box through their online store that is full of chocolates and and wrapped chocolate eggs filled with praline. The 1.25 pound box sells for $78.

Carved and Sculpted Eggs

Carved Dragon Ostrich Egg: $500Forgo those cheap plastic eggs that seem to be overflowing supermarket shelves in the weeks before Easter and satisfy your craving for the seasonal egg-shapes with something that will last. Real eggs of various sizes can be carved and sculpted into a variety of surprising shapes and astonishingly beautiful patterns. Ron Cheruka, the "Egg Man", has been doing egg art for many years and uses modified dental tools with carbide and diamond bits to hand cut every egg that he makes. He uses ostrich, rhea, emu and standard eggs in his work. The emu eggs are visually stunning due to the natural pigments in the shells, which range from teal to black, but the nearly cantaloupe-sized ostrich eggs are the most spectacular. Their thick shells allow for the most detailed carvings, like the dragon pictured here, and the finished egg resembles polished ivory. Dragon Egg Price: $500.
