BMW Presents its new i Brand

With its EfficientDynamics program, electric Mini prototypes and an electric Rolls-Royce under development, the BMW Group is getting serious about its environmental credentials. And now the German automaker has announced a new venture.

Announced earlier today, the i division will be a new range of environmentally-friendly vehicles produced under the BMW banner. Two vehicles will lead the way: the i3, a city car in the same vein as the Smart and the Toyota iQ, and the i8, a production version of the Vision EfficientDynamics concept car.

The company has set up BMW i Ventures with $100 million in capital based in New York City with a variety of initiatives under way, and we expect to head more as they progress.

BMW Reportedly to Produce 2013 Vision EfficientDynamics Supercar

According to Inside Line, which is quoting an unnamed "senior BMW authority out of Munich," the German automaker will indeed build a production version of the Vision EfficientDynamics concept that debuted last year at the Frankfurt Motor Show. BMW is reportedly planning for a model run of between 5,000 and 10,000 units for 2013. We'll get to the details in a moment, but here's the best news: "That name that the marketing people forced on us [is] going to change for sure." Phew.

Apparently, BMW has no plans to ditch the radical plug-in hybrid powertrain, which put out 356 horsepower and an impressive 590 pound-feet of torque in the concept. That means we'll get something similar to the turbocharged three-cylinder diesel range extender and twin electric motors powered by a lithium polymer battery pack that was featured in Frankfurt. Sounds great so far, and BMW claims the performance will be even better than the 4.8-second 0 to 60 run quoted for the concept.

Naturally, some of the Vision's more outlandish exterior bits will go the way of the Dodo, but IL reports BMW's target of weight is still under 3,000 pounds, meaning that high-tech composites and construction techniques are a veritable lock. Price for this next-gen eco-friendly supercar? Nothing announced – but if you have to ask... well, you know the rest.

2009 Frankfurt Auto Show: BMW Vision EfficientDynamics

The Ultimate Driving Machine. That's the tag which BMW has ascribed to itself. And while the Bavarian automaker offers several sporty models, it lacks what industry insiders refer to as a "halo vehicle". That is, one model that sums up with the brand stands for. But they're said to be working on a new supercar – to rival the likes of the Audi R8 and Mercedes SLS AMG – and this could hint at the direction they could take it.

Called the Vision EfficientDynamics, we initially brought you details of the concept car a couple of weeks ago in the ramp-up to the Frankfurt Auto Show, where BMW finally took the wraps off the enticing new concept. But while its competitors continue building bigger and more powerful performance machines, BMW's concept takes a different approach. The engine is a tiny 1.5-liter three-cylinder turbo-diesel, coupled to an electric motor for hybrid propulsion. Lightweight construction helps the Vision get up to sixty in just 4.8 seconds while returning 62.6 miles per gallon on the European cycle, figures which, combined, its rivals can only dream of. BMW Shows the Way Forward with New Vision EfficientDynamics

Who said that loving mother earth and fast cars were mutually exclusive? Certainly not BMW, which has staked its reputation on its EfficientDynamics initiative. Asserting that efficiency and performance can go hand in hand, BMW has been actively researching – and producing – cars that deliver the kind of driving experience for which the Bavarian automaker has become famous while utilizing less resources than ever before. And the company will unveil its new centerpiece for the program – called Vision EfficientDynamics – at the upcoming auto show in nearby Frankfurt.

The space age design speaks for itself, but under the hood BMW has paired a 163hp 1.5-liter three-cylinder turbodiesel with a plug-in electric motor and a dual clutch transmission. The result, according to the Bavarian engineers, is a 4.8-second run to 60 while returning 62.6 miles per gallon. Talk about the best of both worlds. Unfortunately it's just a concept car at the moment, but the show piece gives us an advanced look at what to expect from BMW in the years to come.
