Kennedy Home Gets A Big Price Cut

I would have guessed that the Washington D.C. home belonging to the late Senator Ted Kennedy and his wife Victoria would have sold quickly but it has been on the market since last January with no sale in sight. Now the home's price has been reduced to $6.995 million (when it was first on the market the price wasn't listed but it was expected to be in the $8 million range). The six-bedroom home was purchased in 1998 for $2.775 million and is located in the genteel Kalorama neighborhood. It has a classic facade with a rather White-House-like entrance complete with a columned portico and a hanging lamp over the front door.

The elegant home has a stately feel. The living room has cream colored decor and paintings reflecting the Kennedy love of the ocean. A long sun room has fan windows and a few Kennedy pictures on a table but the room that appeals most is Kennedy's narrow wood-paneled library which features a fireplace. The home includes an eat-in kitchen and a home gym set up with an Endless Pool. Mrs. Kennedy isn't leaving Washington, she has purchased a smaller three bedroom in the area for $1.65 million.

Plans For Edward Kennedy Institute Revealed

The late Senator Edward Kennedy will have his own institute next to his brother's presidential library and museum. The Edward M. Kennedy Institute for the Senate will be next to the John F. Kennedy Presidential Library & Museum on the University of Massachusetts at Boston campus. Renderings for the project were revealed this week. The 44,000-square-foot compound was designed by architect Rafael Vinoly. A groundbreaking is scheduled this fall and the institute is set to open in 2013.

The Boston Herald reports that the institute hopes to raise $125 million to cover the building expenses and start an endowment. The Kennedys have already donated millions on top of the nearly $3.5 million given by the late senator's political campaign. Peter Meade, the institute president and CEO, told the Herald that donors have given or pledged $50 million and that the institute floated $60 million worth of bonds to pay for the construction.

The institute has a unique role, it's not a museum or a library but is focused on education. It will have an exhibit hall, Senate Chamber representation, a replica of Kennedy's office, classrooms, digital library and archives.

The late Senator Ted Kennedy's Senate seat has been filled by Scott Brown and now his widow, Victoria Kennedy has put her Washington D.C. home on the market. As the Real Estalker reports no listing price is given but it is sandwiched between a $9 million house and a $7 million house in the agent's list so in the $8 million range is a safe bet. Would You Pay $1,000 For Ted Kennedy's Memoirs?

My colleague Jared Paul Stern recently reported that Hugh Hefner's biography will run $1,300 a figure no doubt made more tempting by the inclusion of selections from Playboy magazine. But will readers pay $1,000 for Ted Kennedy's memoir, "True Compass?" The NY Times Media Decoder blog says that the publisher, Twelve, an imprint of Grand Central Publishing will issue a limited edition run of 1,000 leather-bound and electronically-signed versions of the memoir. The limited edition will include family photos that are not available in the standard hardcover. The edition will be sold through Hachette Book Group, the parent company of Grand Central of which Twelve is an imprint. Standard copies will sell for $35 and the book will be released in October.

Kennedy is said to have received $8 million for the book which he wrote with Ron Powers, an author of "Flags of Our Fathers." Kennedy is far from the first political figure with an expensive book. A limited edition of President Clinton's massive "My Life" sold for $350 and a leather-bound version of President Reagan's memoir "An American Life" was sold for $1,500 back in 1990.
