Girard-Perregaux 1966 Tourbillon 220th Anniversary Limited Edition Watch

Simple tourbillon watch lovers are probably thrilled with the offerings this year. Many brands are releasing uncomplicated (relatively speaking), classic tourbillon based watches - and here is Girard-Perregaux's entry. The watch is meant to celebrate the 220th anniversary of the brand that began in 1791. They call it the 1966 Tourbillon with Gold Bridge 220th Anniversary Edition watch - it looks lovely in a 40mm wide 18k gold case with a warm dial with blued steel hands and Breguet style Arabic numerals. The tourbillon has a bit of a unique look with one of Girard-Perregaux's iconic "golden" bridges over the tourbillon. Extremely classic and handsome. The movement is the in-house made GP 9610 that is manually wound and has 48 hours of power reserve. On the back of the watch are some special commemorative engravings for this special Anniversary Edition watch. Girard-Perregaux will produce just 50 1966 Tourbillon 220th Anniversary edition pieces - look for them soon.

Korloff Voyageur Kalahari Edition Watch

Korloff Voyageur Kalahari Edition Watch
It has five Swiss ETA quartz movements in it - really. While this is not the first watch to have this many, it does so by having dials on the front and back of the watch. The Korloff Voyageur Kalahari Edition watch is meant to be a true reversible timepiece with a sporty and more subtle demeanor. The illusion works well, and you can track five different time zones at the same time. Battery changing time must be a bitch.

The steel case is 42mm wide with a rippled texture on the side. It is polished on the formal side and brushed on the sporty side. You can see the crowns sticking out from all around it. One potential issues that exists is that it is perhaps hard to recall which crown adjusts which movement. The lugs look almost Bovet style and articulate to make them wrap about one's wrist no matter which way the watch is worn. The strap is cool being rubber on one side and alligator on the other.

I feel as though I'd prefer the sporty dial. The dials are attractive and look legible. I think that Korloff wants to make the watch unisex - and the mother-of-pearl-dialed "sophisticated" dial looks a bit too feminine for my tastes. That dial is available with and without diamonds. Overall Korloff was able to make the Voyageur Kalahari a unique and interesting watch. I think it will do well in the right markets. Just try not to wear it on your way to the Kalahari, else it might get snatched off your wrist. Prices start at $3,175 and Korloff says it will be part of a limited production.

EDITION: A New Resort on Oahu by Ian Schrager, George Yabu, And Glenn Pushelberg

Filed under: Luxury Travel & Hotels

The new hotel brand EDITION officially launches its first hotel in Hawaii on October 15, 2010. This new brand is part of Marriott International. The Waikiki EDITION, situated on Oahu, is set in its own private oasis close to Waikiki's celebrated surfer's beach, marina shopping district. This new urban resort was envisioned by Ian Schrager, and operationalized in collaboration with interior designers George Yabu and Glenn Pushelberg with landscape designer Deborah Nevins.

The lobby's surfing theme is defined by a dramatic, wall-to-wall surfboard installation ( see above) by artist and internationally renowned former professional surfer Herbie Fletcher. It is made from over 100 collected, broken surfboards from the sport's best pipeline surfers: Kelly Slater, Andy Irons, Mick Fanning, Joel Parkinson, Nathan Fletcher, Bruce Irons, and Christian Fletcher. It hangs above the custom-made reception desk, which has been made from sculpted plywood transformed into a natural, organic shape and finished using the techniques and traditions of local Hawaiian surfboard making.

Lamborghini Gallardo LP 570-4 Blancpain Edition Car

Filed under: Timepieces / Watches, Luxury Cars & Autos

The luxury watch world has a slew of car themed watches, but are there are watch themed cars? Well now there is. The relationship between Swiss Blancpain and Italian Lamborghini has blossomed to the point that a bar has been born. Specifically the Gallardo LP 570-4 Blancpain Edition. Blancpain President Marc A. Hayek already races Lambo cars and the brands have participated together in the Lamborghini Blancpain Super Trofeo race series for at least two years now.

As special limited edition, the car, in black (with yellow trim), has some special Blancpain imagery on it, as well as a custom body kit. Both interior and exterior components are in carbon fiber, while the curb weight of the car is only 2954 pounds. Note the conspicuous Blancpain logos on and in the car. The car contains the standard LP-570 570hp 5.2 V10 engine, while this Gallardo enjoys a 3.4 second 0-62 time.

No word on price and how many of the autos are to be produced. Click the "READ MORE" link before for more details from Blancpain.

Scalfaro For Espen Ă˜ino Edition Watch

Mega luxury yacht maker Espen Øino continues its product partnership with Scalfaro to make watches. My colleague on Luxist discussed the two brands' other watch offering here. The newest watch does not have a very distinctive name or style, but a reasonably attractive look nonetheless. 44mm wide in steel with a thinner bezel and give the dial a larger look. The inner chapter-ring is hand finished and also done in brushed steel with hour indicators applied on it. The dial is easy to and monochromatic in tone. A dash of red and green give the watch a hint of color. A diamond is placed as the hour marker at 12 o'clock. Inside the watch is a Swiss automatic mechanical chronograph movement - likely an ETA 2894-2. The Espen Oeino name is placed on the chapter ring and directly below you have the yacht brand logo initials. The watch is placed on a rubber strap. Overall the Scalfaro Espen Oeino Edition is a decent looking watch, but nothing particularly special - it is limited to 100 pieces. Price is likely in the $6,000 - $8000 range.

Eberhard & Co. Extra-Fort Edition Vitree Chronograph Watch

You can always rely on Eberhard & Co. for classic looking watches with modern appeal. Back when Eberhard was perfecting their core designs, the attitude in the watch industry was function first design. It was about making a nice looking watch, that was first and foremost a highly legible and functional watch - before it was an impression piece. Sometimes today you have watch makers creating pure "novelties" that focus much less on being a good watch, and more on boldness or shock value. The Extra-Fort Edition Vitree Chronograph is watch with all the prowess of a classic timepiece crafted from modern materials and manufacturing practices (for a luxury Swiss watch that is).

The 39mm stainless steel case is well milled and features an anti-reflective coating applied sapphire crystal for optimal viewing. You can tell just how easy to read the dial is with its perfectly shaped and sized hands - with clearly viewable hour indicators. Eberhard traded lume for a more classic and elegant look. Inside the watch is an ETA Valjoux 7750 movement that has been modified for use in a bi-compax layout. The result is a 30 minute chronograph with a centralized date window. The movement with it's decorated rotor, is viewable thought the case back window. The watch itself has many dial and strap options. Dial colors include black (glossy and matte), white, and chocolate brown. There are many matching straps available. The use of red stitching in the pictured strap to match the hands and tachymetre scale is sporty and suave. There is also a metal bracelet available. Eberhard & Co. has always been a solid watch maker. If the design appeals to you, have no hesitation about the quality and craftsmanship of the watch itself. THe Extra-Fort Edition Vitree Chronograph watches should be available soon.

Schrager's Marriott Hotel Gets a Name

Filed under: Luxury Travel & Hotels

Around six months ago, lifestyle entrepreneur Ian Schrager and hotel magnate Bill Marriott announced that they would be collaborating on a hotel brand. Now we've got a few more details. Following the popular trend of one-word rather bland names for chains, here comes "Edition." The pair plans to eventually have more than 100 Edition hotels in markets around the globe. The first nine hotels are slated for Paris, Madrid, Costa Rica, Miami, Washington, Chicago and Scottsdale, Ariz. and two in Los Angeles. The hotels will all have 150 to 200 rooms and each will have an individual style. Th partners have also promised to be environmentally responsible. Schrager will be the mastermind behind the concept, design, marketing, branding and food and beverages while Marriott will do the grunt work of development and operations.
