340 On The Park

More eco-friendly building news, this time out of Chicago. The development, 340 On The Park, which is nearing completion, is set to be the first residential high-rise in the Midwest scheduled to meet the LEED Silver certification standards of the United States Green Building Council. The 62-story building has floor-to-ceiling windows with lake, skyline and park views.

Eco-friendly elements include the building's exterior curtain-wall of low-e tinted glass and aluminum panels which peels back to provide a two-story landscaped winter garden, a fitness room in the sky, 25-yard lap pool, clubroom lounge for gathering or entertaining, and Wi-Fi access. During construction, Related Midwest was able to divert 82% of its construction waste – over 2800 tons -- from landfills to be used in projects such as road beds. Green construction practices at 340 on the Park also included using locally produced and recycled building materials, an indoor air quality management plan to keep mechanical systems clean during construction so dust is not trapped in air ducts, and the implementation of an erosion and sediment control program to minimize impact on storm water systems. The building's 343 residences, which include one-, two- and three-bedroom and penthouse homes have mostly sold out but you can buy a one-bedroom unit for $799,000 .

Yield, The Green Wine Bar

I've covered a lot of organic wines in the past, now residents of San Francisco can get all their "green" wines in one place. Yield Wine Bar is perhaps the first exclusively green wine bar. The wine list has 60 wines and a light menu that features organic and sustainable foods. Not all of the wines are certifiably organic or biodynamic but they are all environmentally friendly, made by wineries that are committed to the practice of organic, biodynamic or sustainable agriculture.

Keenan Winery Releases Solar Powered Wine

There are many different ways that wineries go green. We've seen carbon neutral wines, wineries that use sustainable corks and of course all sorts of organic wines. The Robert Keenan Winery has released a wine that is eco-friendly in a different way. Their 2006 Napa Valley Summer Blend Chardonnay is the winery's first release bearing the words "Solar Powered and Sustainably Farmed." Wine Business reports that the winery, located in the Spring Mountain district of the Napa Valley, recently completed a solar power system on their property. The system will supply all of the winery's power needs. When the winery's reds are released in the fall they will carry the same "Solar Powered and Sustainably Farmed" phrase on the label.

The Summer Blend Chardonnay sells for $22 and is a blend of Chardonnay with a small amount of Viognier and Marsanne added. It has aromas of peach lemon and pineapple and delivers a crisp taste with just a bit of oak.

Chilean Winery Goes Carbon Neutral

The drive to go carbon neutral has hit wineries outside the United States. Decanter reports that the Chilean winery Cono Sur has announced a carbon offsetting project and an aid package for indigenous people. The Cono Sur and Isla Negra wines will bear the CarbonNeutral trademark. The winery has chosen The CarbonNeutral Company to help them offset carbon emissions created by sending the wines to market. As the article in Decanter points out, it's partly a strategic move, carbon neutral products are becoming more important to consumers around the globe.

Last week, I mentioned Silverjet, which has made a commitment to being carbon neutral in order to help the environment. Now Executive Charter Services, a private jet charter brokerage company has announced that they are giving clients the balance out the carbon dioxide emissions by purchasing reductions in greenhouse gases from leading carbon retailer TerraPass. TerraPass supports a variety of eco-friendly project like domestic wind farms and energy efficiency projects. An hour in a private jet can use up as much fuel as a whole year in the family car so it is good to see private jet companies making this move. Even if you are not a private jet flyer, you can buy a TerraPass based on the length of your flight and the fuel used to do your part to help make a difference in global warming, TerraPass has also partnered with Expedia, the popular travel website. For a comprehensive look at just how much it will cost you to fly carbon neutral on a private flight check out Helium Report's comprehensive look at the subject.
