East Brick takes it's name from being one of the Three Bricks, three Georgian brick mansions on Main Street on Nantucket built by whale merchant Joseph Starbuck in 1838. The three mansions were for Starbuck's three sons and East Brick was built for William Starbuck. The classic brick mansion has been restored with period furnishings and the front rooms of the house were designed to be as close to their original appearance as possible. The home has four finished floors and seven bedroom suites and does include more modern details like a wine cellar, work out room and steam shower.
According to this expansive article, East Brick was created for around $9,000, which was a quite a lot at the time, and represented the height of luxury for the island during a time when whaling made men rich. It was originally created so that the fanciest finishes were used on the bottom floor with more simple treatments used for the private rooms, kitchens and bathrooms. The renovation changed that a bit, giving a taste of modern luxury to this old beauty. It is listed at $11.8 million and was open for tours this summer. After the jump, call me Ishmael.
