Plans For U2 Tower Put On Hold

The latest architectural project to be shelved due to the economic crisis is the planned U2 Tower in Dublin, Ireland. The tower which has been in the planning stages for several years, was to have been the tallest building in Ireland. The Dublin Docklands Development Authority has said they are still committed to the project and are just putting it on hold until monetary conditions improve. The tower was supposed to have a recording studio for U2 at the top of the building as well as 180 apartments priced at over one million euros each, a price that now seems unreasonable as Ireland faces recession.

Who Stole The Irish Crown Jewels?

I love a good mystery, and the story of the theft of the Irish Crown Jewels is definitely an interesting one. Jerome Reilly for the Irish Independent reports that historical researcher Sean J. Murphy is set to publish his findings on the 100-year-old theft. The jewels, which are made of rubies, emeralds and Brazilian diamonds, were the regalia, or insignia, of the Order of St Patrick and were stolen from a safe in Dublin Castle. The jewels, which would be worth around one million euros today, were taken from the safe with a key which suggests it was an inside job. Murphy's report points the finger at Francis Shackleton, the brother of polar explorer Ernest Shackleton. Francis had been staying at the house of Arthur Vicars, the Officer of Arms of Dublin Castle, who had stored the jewels in his office. There is another possible suspect, Francis Bennett Goldney, but Shackleton is the likelier candidate both because he was having money problems and because he was later convicted of fraud in 1913. Also, in his will, Vicars named the thief as Francis Shackleton. The jewels have never been found.

U2 Tower Planned For Dublin

The band U2 is behind a plan to build the tallest tower in Ireland. The Irish Times reports that the plans for the U2 Tower on Dublin's south Docklands has been lodged with the Dublin Docklands Development Authority. The twisting tower will be 130 meters (427 feet) tall and will be topped by a recording suite for U2 in a penthouse to replace U2's existing studios which are set to be demolished. The project is expected to be completed in the next couple of years and will contain 182 one, two and three bedroom apartments which should sell at prices starting around 1 million euros. The tower twists as it rises so that the last floor is rotated 45 degrees from the first floor. The project has been the source of some controversy and the project has been repeatedly delayed but hopefully it will proceed as planned now.

Located across the street from the seat of government, the Merrion is a wonderful 5-star establishment that caters to distinguished travelers. The classical hotel is comprised of several Georgian townhouses and features a lavish Georgian decor complete with one of the most important collections of Irish art in the world. Try and get into the penthouse which has 2 bedrooms and a living and dining room. The penthouse suite totals 2,800 sq ft with an additional 1,000 sq ft rooftop terrace with hot tub. At 2,200 Euros a night, it's great place to rest after too many pints of Guinness.

Shanahan's on the Green, Dublin

While Ireland is a country known for its breathtaking scenery and friendly people, its cuisine has never topped any favorites list. So, when looking for great dining in Dublin, why not look at a classic American steakhouse to free you from too much pub grub. Shanahan's on the Green is situated on (as the name implies) St. Stephen's Green in central Dublin. Residing in a Georgian townhouse, the restaurant is a beautiful place filled with antiques and crystal chandeliers. The cuisine is hearty and the plating is artful. Steaks of certified Angus Irish beef and fresh North Atlantic seafood ensure that nobody leaves hungry. Save room for the Baby Banana Souffle, it's heavenly.
