New Show To Highlight Steampunk In New York City

Steampunk merges with modern style at The Architectural Design Magazine Home Show coming March 17-20 , 2011 in New York City. Art Donovan of Donovan Design will launch his first NYC show with a collection of "Steampunk Modern" illuminated designs and will also be signing his newest book, "The Art of Steampunk." Steampunk combines modern technology with a style sensibility taken from the Victorian era.

There's a Facebook page for the exhibit that shows a few designs and highlights and Donovan has promised that if it gets up to 2500 "likes" for this page everyone will be entered into a raffle to win one of his Steampunk lamp designs. The final log on date is midnight, March 12. There will be five runner up prizes of the original, Signed Steampunk posters from the Oxfords' University Museum exhibition. That exhibit was the world's first Steampunk Art Exhibition taking place at the Museum of the History of Science, the University of Oxford, UK.

Sage Marine, Design-Centered Cabin Lights

We've covered the work of New York lighting designer Art Donovan a few times before. Now Donovan is taking his work to the high seas, with a new line of yacht-ready lighting, Sage Marine. His company has been working with the Sag Harbor Yacht Yard and Ship's Chandlery to create hand crafted premium cabin lamps for boats and yachts. The lights are made of indestructible marine-grade materials including mahogany, stainless steel, and fiberglass, and have classic clean modern design. Both lamps are priced at $1450 each and are available directly through Sage Marine, subsidiary of Donovan Design, Southampton, NY.

Siddhartha Pod Lamp

Today, my friend Art Donovan from Donovan Design out in Southampton, New York sent me pictures of his latest design. This new lamp is his first in a style known as Steampunk. Steampunk combines modern technology with a style sensibility taken from the Victorian era. The new lamp is called the Siddartha Pod Lantern and Art reports that is it the most labor intensive lamp he has ever worked on. He spent several months designing and creating the lamp from solid bass, copper and mahogany. It is over four feet tall and signed and dated, engraved in brass at the top. The lamp sells for $23,000.

Donovan Design Screen

My friend Art Donovan, the genius behind Donovan Illumination and Design sent me a picture of his latest piece. This piece is a moire screen that he did for Fellissimo in New York City. The polycarbonate screen is lit from behind and topped with hand made palm lamps. The screen as shown is 48" wide x 86" tall and sells for $8700. Custom sizes are available. I love it, it looks like something a 1920s-era actress would duck behind to change her dress.

Donovan Designs Gilded Barnwood Table

Art Donavan of Donoavan Design recently sent me a link to pictures of his lighting designs. While I found the lighting gorgeous and innovative, it was this roughhewn table shot through with gilding that attracted my attention (what can I say, I like shiny). Donovan has been an artist in New York for 30 years and personally designs, hand crafts, signs and dates every work that comes out of his studio. Donavan and his wife Leslie Tarbell Donovan have a lighting gallery in Southampton, New York. The table shown here is antique barnwood which is sold by the square foot ($175 per square foot). The client specifies all the details and Donavan creates each piece individually.
