Versace Presents a Peek at Fall Fashion Week

Versace's readying the bright lights and big runways for its Fall Fashion Week collection, and it's teased a behind-the-scenes, black-and-white shoot by Mario Testino to get you ready. And if the fashions don't get your attention, Valerija Kelava (caught last week in Prada's campaign), Iselin Steiro and Anna Selezneva probably will.

Mick Jagger's Sexy Daughter the New Face of Versace

Things are certainly going well for Mick Jagger's model daughter Georgia May Jagger as we first predicted back in the summer of 2008. Of course with a Rolling Stone for a dad and Jerry Hall for a mom what else would one expect for the 17-year-old stunner? In September we noted she had landed a sexy new ad campaign for Hudson Jeans; now she has made the cover of British Vogue and been named the new face of Versace. Jagger has just been photographed for the ad campaign by Mario Testino. "She's smart, beautiful, full of energy and has a strong personality [with] that natural high star quality. I adore her," Donatella Versace told WWD. "She's perfect for this collection - a real Versace girl."

Versace Cuts 350 Jobs

donatella versaceVersace has been a brand in transition for a while now but new CEO Gian Giacomo Ferraris has been shaking things up lately. His latest move is an announcement that the Italian fashion house will lose 350 jobs worldwide by the middle of next year as part of a cost-cutting initiative that also includes a thorough evaluation of Versace's store network. The brand recently decided to close stores in Japan, formerly one of the biggest luxury goods markets.

The Wall Street Journal reports
that the company is expected to post a pre-tax loss of €30 million ($44.4 million) on revenue of €273 million. This is a sharp contrast to 2008 when Versace posted a net profit of €9 million on sales of €336 million. Part of the decline is due to a fall in sales in the company's wholesale business and the financial collapse of IT Holding SpA, which produced clothing for Versace under brand licensing agreements. Versace re-launched the secondary line Versus at Milan Fashion week earlier this month. The brand will move forward with new runway designs and will instead focus its fat trimming in the areas of production, distribution and logistics. That's good news for Donatella Versace, the brand's designer who also holds a 20 percent stake in the company. Her daughter Allegra Versace Beck has a 50 percent stake bequeathed to her by her late uncle Gianni Versace and her other uncle Santo Versace has the remaining 30 percent of the company. Ferraris came aboard this spring after Donatella Versace's repeated battles with Giancarlo Di Risio.

Di Risio Out At Versace

So much for the show of unity at Versace. the Wall Street Journal and other sources are reporting that CEO Giancarlo Di Risio has resigned. Over Memorial Day weekend it was believed that Di Risio would be fired after months of pitched battle with Donatella Versace but those reports were summarily denied. Turns out there was quite a bit of truth to it. The company now reports that Di Risio's resignation was a mutual decision. Di Risio, who has also worked for LVMH and probably won't be eager to sign on for a family-run business again any time soon, will stay on for a while as the company searches for a new CEO. One name that keeps floating to the top is former Pringle of Scotland's chief executive, Kim Winser. Winser once described herself as a "tough cookie with chocolate bits in it" and she's going to need that toughness to hold her own in the Versace empire.

Will Versace's CEO Get The Boot?

The news may be slow in the U.S. this weekend but things are heating up in Milan. Bloomberg reports that Gianni Versace SpA's board is meeting to discuss the fate of Chief Executive Officer Giancarlo di Risio. Seems that the CEO ran afoul of La Donatella in a battle over creative control. What's really interesting is that the fight is reportedly over several issues including the fact that he wanted to license a cheaper line designed by someone else.

Giancarlo di Risio first hit our radar in January this year when he said that Versace would not be marking down products in the economic downturn. But then in February Versace announced it was reviving its second line Versus. The bridge line was originally created by Gianni Versace in 1989 as a project for his sister Donatella. Versace signed a deal with Italian company Gruppo Facchini to create clothing and accessories lines for men and women for the new line planned for Spring/Summer 2010. For his part, di Risio wasn't happy that Donatella Versace continues to use long-time Versace photographer Mario Testino for the brand's ad campaign. Testino gets a cool $140,000 a day.

Versace has thrived under di Risio who worked with Donatella to create a more elegant version of Versace that appeals to the luxury consumer. But in the end it's still a family brand (Donatella owns 20 percent, her brother Santo has 30 percent and her daughter Allegra inherited Gianni Versace's stake of 50 percent). Di Risio, a serial CEO of Italian clothing companies will likely have no trouble finding a new gig.

Who might replace di Risio? The Telegraph says that one possible option is Kim Winser, who was behind the resurgence of Scottish brand Pringle and recently resigned from Aquascutum.

UPDATE: Versace has denied any friction between Donatella and Giancarlo di Risio and released their new three-year plan.

Versace's Pricey New Perfume

Times are tough, people are cutting back and yet now seems to be the time that designers are trotting out the ultra high-end fragrances. Recently Ralph Lauren's Limited-Edition Love Eau de Parfum Amethyst hit the market, selling for $2,200 at Neiman Marcus and boasting a 47 carat amethyst as a bottle topper. Now here comes Donatella Versace with her four-figure offering, Gianni Versace Couture, a new fragrance that will retail for $2,100. The new fragrance comes in a white leather train case and has notes of bergamot and tangerine with a floral kick from jasmine, heliotrope and almond blossom and a base that includes tonka bean, patchouli heart and sandalwood. The scent will be sold in Versace's boutiques, launching in November in Europe and not hitting the U.S. until December. There will be 100 pieces made to start out with but more will be made if wallets remain flush through the new year.

Versace Ltd. Edition Lamborghini to be Available in Fall

Filed under: Apparel, Luxury Cars & Autos

The limited-edition Lamborghini by Versace which we first wrote about plans for in 2006 is finally going into production for fall. The car, which will be a convertible in contrast to the coupe originally developed, will be a bright pastel white with a black-and-white leather interior. The price of the special-order Murciélago LP 640 Roadster Versace has yet to be named, but expect to pay a healthy premium above the model's already hefty base price of $358,000. The V12 roadster, designed by Donatella Versace and just unveiled in Milan during Men's Fashion Week, will feature a see-through engine bay cover and the fashion house's signature Greek key motif on the doors, front fascia and nappa leather seats. Versace has also designed an accompanying line of black calfskin accessories including luggage, wallet, gloves, driving shoes, hat and even a pair of leather jeans all bearing an engraved metal Lamborghini Versace tag.

Donatella Versace Inspired By Barack Obama

Fashion designer Donatella Versace took a timely inspiration for her latest fashion show. The woman who once said she wanted to dress Hillary Clinton in more feminine outfits and less pantsuits has turned her attention to Barack Obama. Versace dedicated her Spring-Summer 2009 collection presented Saturday evening to Obama. Of course she had some fashion tips for the Presidential candidate as well, she urged him to shed the tie and "jazz up the shirt." Her collection was certainly short on ties and long on jazzy colors, offering suit jackets with double lapels or no lapels at all, slim shiny trousers and shirts in summery pastel shades of pale blue, lemon yellow and lavender.

Will Lindsay Lohan Be The Next Face of Versace?

Lindsay Lohan may not be the latest Louis Vuitton girl but could she be the next face of Versace? Fashion Week Daily reports that Lohan has said that she is in talks to be the face of Versace for the fall season. According to Versace, nothing has been made official yet. It would be a sharp turn for Versace, their recent ad campaigns have featured the older and fabulous including Madonna, Demi Moore and Halle Berry and Lohan's fans wouldn't seem to be the standard Versace demographic.
