Carbon Design Group Domino Clock

Carbon Design Group has succeeded in making the first prototype of a wall clock that looks like three large domino bricks placed right next to each other. Because the dominoes natively have up to 12 dots on them, they make perfect indicators for a stylized clock. Read in order from left to right, the pieces indicate the hours, and then the two digits for the minutes. Really just that simple. The numeral circles flip around from black to white when the time changes. Each of the three large bricks communicates wirelessly with each other to ensure the time is right. I believe that each would have to be powered separately.

While the concept has the domino bricks mounted on a wall, they could just as easily be perched on a table. The electrical mechanism required to make the system work needed to engineered practically from the ground up. Carbon Design Group developed a new type of electronic magnetic coil motor, and the system can be adjusted for how fast you want the discs to turn over. The now working concept will be officially unveiled in 2011, with possible consumer versions of the Domino Clock available after that. Click below for a view of the clock in action.

Domino Magazine's "The Deal Hunter"

Domino magazine, "the guide to living with style," has a fun column called "The Deal Hunter," penned by young Columbia alum Nick Olsen, that features a plethora of style for (mostly) low prices. I know here at Luxist we're often about the high-end, big ticket items, but I think it's OK to watch the finances now and then in order to keep affording the big stuff. Olsen writes in that chatty, bloggy style (which I haven't mastered, alas) and regularly finds things from all ends of the home decor spectrum. Just to show he's not all about the cheap stuff, he recently featured a $950 table from Mecox. Check out his blog if you're looking for a deal but still want lots of style or something colorful for your home.

Herm�s Travel Domino Set

I love travel sized games, not just because they're handy on a trip but mostly because the miniature size makes them so adorable. And this travel Dominos set from Hermès is not only adorable, but very classy as well. The individual dominos feature an "H" logo on the back, have rounded corners and edges, and look to be very thin in design (is that a good feature in a domino?). And when you're done playing with, or just admiring, the pieces they all fit nicely into the stylish leather case.

So, do people really play Dominos while traveling, or this just a gimmick? Either way, I kinda want one.

John Hardy Domino Set
