Dominick Dunne's Belongings Head To Auction

We've seen two of the late Dominick Dunne's properties go up for sale, now items from both homes are going up for auction through Stair Galleries (the Manhattan apartment has sold, the Connecticut house remains on the market now at just $1.3 million down from $2.1 million).

In his years as a reporter, novelist, producer and all-around raconteur, Dunne brushed elbows with many greats both famous and infamous. The auction reflects that with both books (many signed to Dunne by the authors) and an unusual array of objects, including a group of fine Chinese Export porcelain, up for bid. Many pieces in the collection were originally purchased by Mr. Dunne and his late wife for their Beverly Hills house, the scene of legendary parties in the days before the omnipresent paparazzi. The sale also features Hollywood memorabilia and photographs and Dunne's green Jaguar convertible, "Audrey." The auction is on November 20 and previews begin on Friday, November 12th, and run through the morning of the sale on the 20th.

Dominick Dunne's New York City Apartment, Estate of the Day

dominick dunneWe've already covered the late great author Dominick Dunne's Connecticut retreat. That house, which hit the market at $2.1 million, was recently reduced to $1.495 million. The Real Estalker reveals that Dunne's estate has also put his New York City pied-a-terre up for sale. The one bedroom penthouse at 155 E. 49th Street is a little jewel box of a place with a wraparound terrace with room enough for entertaining, a small study and a living room with a wood-burning fireplace. The kitchen is miniscule and overall the rooms are small but it seems to still carry the genteel spirit of its former owner. The celadon-colored living room has French doors which open out onto the terrace. The bedroom has vivid blue wallpaper and on one wall a poster for one of his son Griffin's movies still hangs on the wall. This apartment is listed at $1.45 million.

Dominick Dunne In Connecticut, Estate of the Day

The home of the late great writer Dominick Dunne reminds me a bit of another writer's home also in Connecticut, the home of William Styron (still on the market for $1.895 million). Like Styron's home, Dunne's abode has a bookish and dated appeal that befits an author of a certain age and reputation. Dunne's three-bedroom home has likely been the home of many lively dinner parties. It is located on a peninsula with views of Whalebone Cove and the 5.6 acre lot also includes a two-car garage with guest quarters and a gazebo. From the well-worn front door to faded rugs on the floor and the stacks of books on every coffee table, the whole home has a gently threadbare gentility. The bordello-red dining room and the emerald green master bedroom could use a bit of a refresh but Dunne's small book-packed study with covers of books framed on the wall is particularly delightful. I can only hope that all of his books and belongings find a good home. This property is listed at $2.1 million.

UDPATE: This home is now listed at $1.495 million.
