The Fashion Statement: Take the Plunge

swimwear

Summer is bearing down upon us and so is the most fearful word in the English language -- swimwear. Sooner or later we all have to buy a swimsuit and we women like this seasonal ritual about about as much as filing our tax returns.

But this season offers hope. For those among us who aren't blessed with Gisele's bod, now is as good a time as any to hit the fitting rooms. Why? Because, one-pieces, like the throng Dolce & Gabbana (pictured above) sent down the runway, have the ability to cover up imperfections without a whiff of dowdy. If bikinis are more your thing, there are plenty of boy bottoms cut à la Marilyn Monroe that hide a lot more than the essentials. Of course, if you are a Gisele, there are still plenty of ways to show off your assets.

Here's a cheat sheet on who's doing what in swimwear. Then, ladies, gather up your courage, go forth and shop!

RETRO '50s: Designers have gone back to the days of Harry Truman, Cat on a Hot Tin Roof and the birth of Rock 'n Roll. Maurizio Pecoraro, Stella McCartney, Moschino Cheap & Chic, and Hervé Leger all presented swimwear that jumped out of the mid-century. These silhouettes sit oh-so-low on the leg, but still read sexy because of their emphasis on the waist.

CUTOUTS: Not for the faint of heart. If the retro style is Marilyn Monroe, swimwear with cutouts are more like Grace Jones. Tim Hamilton, Gucci, Roksanda Ilincic, Jen Kao, and Yigal Azrouël sent out suits with a touch of the '80s and a good dose of fierce.

THE DEEP V: The swimwear equivalent of J. Lo's famed Versace dress, deep Vs are de rigueur. Jasmine di Milo, Milly and Twenty8Twelve showed V necks plunging down there that promise to boost the sex appeal of the waif-ish, in particular.

ONE SHOULDER: Gone are the days of the matronly one-piece. Taking a cue from evening wear over the last several seasons, Emporio Armani, Unique, Michael Kors, and Diane von Furstenberg designed swimwear that drape over one-shoulder, with some incorporating cutouts.

ITSY BITSY: Gisele's milieu. Jean Paul Gaultier, Dsquared2 and Emporio Armani used fabric sparingly in their swim collections. Waists are as low as they can go while tops are tiny triangles held together by a string. One-pieces take cutouts to another level -- one from Gaultier is in a harlequin pattern.

Dolce & Gabbana Miss Helen Crocheted Shopper Handbag
I, for one, don't think there's enough crochet in the world of fashion. It's a bit of a lost art. Dolce & Gabbana must think so too because they've come up with this pretty Miss Helen Crocheted Shopper as part of their Spring 2010 collection. It features pretty crochet over lambskin leather and has two pairs of long leather tassels and a set of mixed-metal chains draped over the front for a nice contrast of old-fashioned and modern. A great way to incorporate a chunk of black into your spring ensemble. $1,895.

Dolce & Gabbana Miss Martini Patchwork Pony Shoulder Bag, Handbag of the Day

Dolce & Gabbana Miss Martini Patchwork Pony Shoulder BagThe Dolce & Gabbana Miss Martini Patchwork Pony Shoulder Bag is a fun way to work a lot of animals prints into your outfit at the same time.

Some of these prints are actually pony hair, originating from Italy and New Zealand, so not only does the bag make it look like you're dating a successful Serengeti fur trapper, but it's soft and stroke-worthy (helpful, because you miss him on his long trips).

In all seriousness, this is super cute. Throw this over your shoulder with a little black dress, put a martini in the other hand, and you might as well be in Mad Men. The bag is 9"W X 8"H X 1½"D, and has a fabulous goldtone chain and logo plate. Added bonus: all these colors are neutrals, so you can totally pair it with your jewel-toned holiday dresses for a very luxe effect.

The Dolce & Gabbana Miss Martini Patchwork Pony Shoulder Bag is available from Saks Fifth Avenue for $1,075.00.

Fashion-conscious female consumers who feel like most of the mobile phones on the market are far too ugly and masculine for their taste should be excited by the Jalou. Meet the World's Hottest New Supermodel

Lithuanian stunner Edita Vilkeviciute gets our vote as the girl mostly likely to be dubbed the world's hottest new supermodel. Her considerable allure is perfectly showcased in new editorial (above) shot by Greg Kadel for German Vogue. As Models.com notes, Edita not only echoes classic supermodels of the '90s - think Linda Evangelista, Cindy Crawford and Christy Turlington - who are enjoying a comeback just now but is "destined to become legendary in her own right." She stars in the new Dolce & Gabbana Fall/Winter 2009 ad campaign and has also appeared in ads for the likes of The Gap, Dior Beauty, Emporio Armani, CK Jeans, Versace, Etro and Pringle as well as on the runway for Victoria's Secret and others.

The Supermodel Comeback, which we've been keeping track of for a while now, shows no signs of abating anytime soon. Picking up from fall, the new Spring / Summer 2009 ad campaigns star a slew of famous faces. Foremost, fresh off a wintery Chanel campaign for Karl Lagerfeld, the eternallly gorgeous Claudia Schiffer is starring in a sun-slathered series of Cruise Collection ads (above) for Dolce & Gabbana shot by Steven Klein. She has also landed the new Yves Saint Laurent Spring ad campaign, taking over from Naomi Campbell. The YSL ads were shot in front of the legendary Hollywood sign by Inez van Lamsweerde and Vinoodh Matadin. Meanwhile Claudia is also re-upping as the face of Salvatore Ferragamo.

Proceeds from the book benefit children's charity Butterfly Onlus Foundation.

Dolce & Gabbana One-of-A-Kind Men's Crocodile Bags

Beginning this month, Italian design duo Dolce & Gabbana are debuting an incredibly luxurious collection of one-off crocodile bags for men as part of their Spring / Summer 2009 offerings. The collection is limited to 20 unique pieces worldwide, each costing about $50,000. The One-of-A-Kind collection "blends together the artisan leather tradition of Tuscany with Dolce & Gabbana's innovative use of precious materials," the company notes. Each piece is crafted out of "the finest mix of luxurious multi-colored crocodile skin in a unique and not-reproducible combination meant for those men who are looking for the ultimate object of desire." Inside each bag is an embroidered label reading "Limited Edition - Number 1 of 1." Last summer my colleague Rigel Celeste wrote about the women's version.

Micol Metallic Envelope Clutch, Handbag of the Day

I like the idea of an envelope clutch, and at first this one appealed to me, but the more I look at it the uglier I think it is. It's the Micol Metallic Envelope Clutch by D&G and it's pretty much exactly what it sounds like -- a large leather envelope. It zips closed instead of folds over like a typical envelope, and from the pictures it looks like that ends up being a a little awkward. It has a leather pull with an attached silver padlock on the front, a contrast panel and dangling key bell on the back, and (perhaps the best part for me) the interior is lined in a pretty shade of pink silk. $695

Carrying one of the new Dolce & Gabbana 'One-of-a-Kind' bags means you were personally invited to one of a select few events at a D&G boutique, as that's the only way to get one. The collection includes 17 bags made of crocodile skin, pony skin, and suede in various combinations, and the warm, intense color schemes are meant to evoke feelings of the English countryside. Sizes vary from small to big and each bag in the collection is designed for women who want a favorite bag that they carry with them every day to every occasion.

Dolce & Gabbana Tailors Italian Nat'l Soccer Team

To celebrate the 2008 European Cup soccer tournament, dashing designers Dolce & Gabbana have created a stylish new wardrobe for the Italian National Football Team ("Nazionale"). Italy debuted today in the fiercely-competitive 16-nation tournament at the Stade de Suisse in Berne, Switzerland. Dolce & Gabbana custom-tailored natty narrow-lapeled one-button dark blue suits with the Nazionale badge embroidered on the breast pocket, classic white shirts and solid narrow blue silk ties for the team. Filling out their off-pitch wardrobe are blue single-breasted peak-lapel blazers, matching four-button vests, blue cotton and wool hooded track suit tops, blue cotton track suit bottoms with satin belts and sides, and black nylon padded parkas with multiple pockets and detachable hoods. The collaboration is the latest in a line of recent designer makeovers for famed European football (soccer) teams, including Giorgio Armani for the Chelsea F.C. and Paul Smith for Manchester United. Dolce & Gabbana Miss Pocket Patchwork Snakeskin Bag, Handbag of the Day

Bright and cheerful, the Miss Pocket Patchwork Snakeskin North/South Bag by Dolce & Gabbana will go with almost any outfit (probably best on solid colors though) and in my opinion fits in during any season. Made in Italy of genuine snakeskin with suede trim, it has silver hardware, a fine textile lining, and a suede patch embossed with "Miss Pocket" on the inside. It also has short leather handles and a longer shoulder strap (both detachable), plus an engraved nameplate that dangles on the outside of the bag. $3,995
