Dodge Viper Bids Farewell in Detroit with ACR 1:33 Edition

Filed under: Luxury Cars & Autos

It's been a good run for the Dodge Viper. The all-American supercar gave Chrysler its reputation for putting its show-stopping show-cars into production back in 1992. Unfortunately those days are behind the troubled automaker, and that means the Viper is going the way of the do-do. But not before it's racked up some serious accomplishments, the most recent of which was claiming the fastest lap time at the venerable Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca, one of the most challenging circuits in the world.

After setting a record 1 minute, 33 second lap time around Laguna Seca, Dodge announced it would create a special-edition American Club Racer, and that ultimate Viper just debuted at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit. The Dodge Viper ACR 1:33 Edition gets a special paint scheme, revised aerodynamics and revised gearing, making this a fitting tribute to the sportscar that put Dodge on the map. Unfortunately only 10 examples will be produced, all of which have undoubtedly been spoken for by now. But you can see more in the gallery below.

Devon GTX: New American Supercar Debuts at Pebble Beach

Filed under: Luxury Cars & Autos

Exclusive supercars have typically been the realm of European automakers, but Devon hopes to change all that with the GTX. Rumors and speculation have been circulating for months about the all-American exotic, but the start-up automaker chose the exclusive Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance as the venue to unveil their first creation.

The Devon GTX packs the 8.4-liter V10 engine sourced from the Dodge Viper, tuned to 650 horsepower and mated to a six-speed manual transmission, into a steel frame with carbon fiber body panels. 18-inch front and 19-inch rear wheels are sheathed in Michelin Pilot Sport 2 Z-rated tires, with a 19 and 20-inch set-up also available, housing six-piston and four-piston break calipers front and rear, for superior stopping abilities to match the engine's monstrous power capacity. Only 36 examples will be produced per year at a price of $500,000, and a racing package is available for another $25k.

Louis Moinet Watches Sponsor Primetime Race Group's American Le Mans Viper Car

Filed under: Timepieces / Watches, Luxury Cars & Autos, Sports

I never thought I'd see such a nice brand on the side of a race car, an American race car at that. Swiss watch maker Louis Moinet is one of the major sponsors of the Primetime Race Group's # 11 Dodge Viper race car that will compete in the American Le Mans racing season - now in Primetime's second full season in the race. This is the only Viper that will compete in the race series and I believe was specifically chosen by Louis Moinet. They are attempting to appeal to affluent American watch buyers by participating with an American race car, in an American race.

Whether the move will pay off has yet to be seen, but Louis Moinet is not the only watch brand to sponsor race cars. One obivous other brand is Tissot, which has ties to NASCAR and motorcycle racing. You can tell that the branding on the side of car # 11 is very prominent., with the name of the brand, the website, as well as an image of their new Tempograph watch. No doubt that this will be the first time many Americans are exposed to the unique looks of Louis Moinet whose watches are based on 200 year old designs.

Filed under: Luxury Cars & Autos

As Detroit inches ever closer to its famous Dream Cruise, a celebration of antique, classic and modern American cars, the famous Woodward Ave. is bustling with '69 fastbacks, '57 Chevys and the like as they perform their trial runs for the big event. The annual classic car extravaganza

Forbes has just what we need -- a list of the top ten all-American sports cars. From the cars that have become synonymous with America, like the Corvette and the Mustang, to the less obvious but still powerful, such as the supercharged, 443-horsepower Cadillac XLR-V and 305 hp Panoz Esperante. Modern classics, such as the new Challenger, Camaro and Mustang, also pepper the list, as do American exotics, including the Saleen S7 and Dodge Viper SRT10, though the absence of the Ford GT was curious.

What Your Car Says About You

Filed under: Luxury Cars & Autos

Why would someone buy a Bentley Arnage instead of a Rolls Royce Phantom? How about a Chevrolet Corvette vs. a Ferrari F430? Or a Lexus LS 460 over a BMW 7-series? As we do with our clothes, hobbies and careers, we define ourselves through our vehicles in some way or another -- yes, even the Honda Accord owner -- and it never ceases to fascinate. That's why a recent article in Forbes outlining what our cars say about us caught our attention.

Forbes went out and interviewed loads of PR guys from various automakers, poured through studies about typical owners of a particular brand and model, and stirred in a little stereotyping to come up with gems like these:

-Bentley Arnage owners are likely self-made, more interested in rewarding themselves and staying anonymous, unlike owners of the Rolls Royce Phantom, who want to stand out in a crowd.

-Aston Martin owners are also self-made and discreet. According to a company spokesperson, Aston Martin owners are "the sort of people who would prefer to wear the designer brand on the inside rather than the outside."

-Unlike owners of other SUVs, Jeep Wrangler drivers actually go off-road.

-96 percent of Dodge Viper owners are men, they enjoy to drive, and they want to beat every other car out on the road.

1996 Dodge Viper Being Auctioned Off For Hurricane Relief

Filed under: Luxury Cars & Autos

It must be fate, last night driving home on a mostly deserted street I pulled up to a red Dodge Viper at a stoplight, today I learn on a Viper that is being auctioned off on eBay to benefit those affected by Hurricane Katrina. An anonymous donor offered this 1996 Viper to the Pathway Church in Maryland and 100% of the proceeds will go to hurricane relief. The Viper has less than 40,000 miles on it and comes with a soft top and soft windows. Thecurrent bid stood at $32,000 last time I checked.
