"The Back-Up Plan" Earrings Available At A Discount

judith bright india earringsThe other day I mentioned Wendy Brandes' earrings in "Sex and the City 2," but she's not the only designer who is seeing her earrings in a movie this week. Judith Bright jewelry has three different pairs of her airy dangles on Jennifer Lopez in the "The Back-up Plan." Signature Judith Bright pieces in the film include her hand-formed and hammered Paisley earrings; Ashley earrings, the India Marquis earrings with turquoise drops shown at right and her RockLess Stacking Cuffs, hand-hammered and organic stacking cuffs.

While she had provided several pieces to the film's costume designers, Judith Bright wasn't sure they would end up in the movie and was thrilled to see them on Jennifer Lopez. It's been a fast rise for Bright who began her formal jewelry design career just six years ago, after a career as President of Quincy Jones Music Publishing in Hollywood, California, She studied at the Le Arti Orafe School of Jewelry in Florence, Italy, learning, among other skills, silversmithing and wax carving. In 2004, she and her family settled in Nashville, Tennessee. In addition to "The Back-up Plan," Judith Bright's jewels have appeared on television shows including "Gossip Girl," "Samantha Who?," "The New Adventures of Old Christine," "Better Off Ted" and others.

To celebrate the new placement Judith Bright Jewelry is offering 20% off to anyone who sends their "Back Up Plan" movie ticket stub into the studio. The deal is good through May 31.

Discount Rules While Luxury Flounders

More bad news for Saks Fifth Avenue. As our sister blog Daily Finance reported, Saks has released its second quarter results beating analysts' expectations by posting a loss of $54.5 million, or 39 cents per share on sales of $561.7 million. Same store sales were down 15.5 percent. None of this is too surprising, luxury shopping has been taking a huge hit in this economy. But what is compelling is that Saks saving grace may end up being its discount outlets. An AP story said that the less-expensive Off 5th stores are doing better than Saks' full-price stores. This news comes as Nordstrom, which has also been having a rough time in this market has announced that is expanding its discount chain, Nordstrom Rack. The question I have is with the boom of outlet stores and the success of discount stores like Marshalls and TJ Maxx, who will be left to buy the items at their original prices? The discount market relies on the fact that department stores exist and that some buyers are willing to pay the premium to have their choice of designer goods. If the luxury brand buyers switch to buying the brands only at discounted rates it remains to be seen how the structure of shopping will change. I suppose the good news in this for luxury retailers is that the shopping impulse is alive and well in U.S. consumers, they just aren't willing to spend the big bucks currently.

Rolex Buys Rolex Watches To Prevent Price Drops

Watch sales are down, way down in some places, and the only option for many dealers is to provide deep discounts to move inventory. This creates price drops that many watch brands are less than thrilled with. Some brands are taking an active approach to protect brand pricing. Rolex is personally purchasing back inventory from dealers who are having trouble selling Rolex watches. Buying back the watches gives some money back to the retailers to help them during hard times, and allows Rolex to be confident that less deep discounting is occurring in the market. Rolex is of the most protective brands when it comes to pricing and image. They have an almost legendary reputation for not giving significant discounts. This is not a fact that they wish to change right now when keeping the integrity of a brand's pricing system solid is an important endeavor.

It is no secret that Rolex is a cash rich company. It is not likely a huge impact for them to be buying back inventory which will likely be warehoused until future times when things are better for the luxury watch market. I would go so far as to say that it is probably in Rolex's best interest to dismantle and recycle unsold watches than to release them at below market rates (that they set). Further, you might be wondering why dealers are all selling back to Rolex in the first place rather than discounting and potentially getting more money. This would likely conflict with their authorized dealer contracts with Rolex. Plus, Rolex likely has a redemption right - that allows it to buy back stock under certain circumstances. For you, this means less chance that your dream Rolex watch is going to be discounted any time soon. Pictured is a 2009 Rolex Datejust watch with Arabic numerals.

Behnaz Sarafpour for Target

Following in the steps of Paul & Joe, Luella Bartley and Tara Jarmon, designer Behanz Sarafpour is joining the Target's GO International line, which brings high fashion into a more affordable price range. Sarafpour is an Italian-born designer who has been a big part of the fashion scene in NY for the past few years, since launching her own line in 2001. Her designs use lots of black, with clean lines and flattering cuts on the fabrics.

Since each GO International collection lasts 90 days in store, Sarafpour's designs will not be available until November, although they will last throughout the holiday season. The line features lots of black and white, as well as a number of party outfits which would be excellent additions to holiday wardrobes.

Luxury for Less

If you're not familiar with the retail industry calendar, you may not be aware of peak  season sales. You're probably familiar with Day after Christmas sales, but the other big annual sale usually occurs towards the end of June.

In other words, it's hunting season, ladies! And the best part is that many retailers have extended their in-store bargains to online shoppers. The ever-posh Bergdorf Goodman is offering spring and summer items marked down by up to 40%.

With 40% off, the Elie Tahari white lace dress that I have been coveting from afar will now only cost me $299.00! (Hey, that's down from $498.00, mind you...) And this is just the tip of the iceberg -- designer garb from Missoni, Derek Lam, Stella McCartney, and Jimmy Choo are also up for grabs.

Happy hunting!

This cube bowl from Nambé is designed by Karim Rashid and uses a non-tarnishing metal alloy that has superior heat- and cold-retention properties. It originally sold for $135 and is now $81.
