"The Ladies" Bone China Plates

Here's a collector's item plate set that was inspired by the past but is sure to turn heads and start conversations well into the future. Designed by Caroline Silfverling and called simply "The Ladies," the set includes 4 plates and features old-fashioned pin-up girls sitting amidst piles of oversized rose blooms. Classic in black and white on white, the plates are inspired by historical objects, events, textiles, and (of course) old movies and are intended to help connect us with the past in a revived and refreshed way. Made of fine bone china, £120 for the set of 4.

Vera Wang Wedgwood China

Last weekend, at a friend's house I was taken with their heirloom china, thin, light and rimmed in gold. At the time, I mentioned that they don't make china like that any more. Perhaps that isn't entirely true. Vera Wang's Gold Lace china from Wedgwood. As pretty as the famous dresses Vega Wang creates, this china has gold lace bands and wispy florals. Each five-piece setting with a dinner plate, salad plate, bread and butter plate, cup and saucer sells for $139.

Kate Spade Holiday Plates

Kate Spade clearly knows that few things are more festive than brightly colored holiday lights, so she used them as the main pattern on her holiday accent plates. The 9-inch china plates work with her Rutherford Circle line of tableware, but the plates can also be used on their own, for dinner or dessert, and can be matched up with other white dinnerware if you already have such collection. The plates come in a set of four and are dishwasher safe. Price: $80.

Good China, Bad China

Normally "fun" and "bone china" do not go together, since elegant place settings are standard when china is concerned. The Good China, Bad China collection, by Peter MacCann from thorsten van elten, retains the classic look of plain, white china with a simple twist, which would be revealed as the plate was cleared of food during a meal. At the center of each plate is one of the 7 Deadly Sins or 7 Seven Contrary Virtues. Plate pairs are Humility against Pride, Kindness against Envy, Chastity against Lust, Temperance against Anger, Charity against Greed and Diligence against Sloth. Abstinence and Gluttony make up the serving plates. Serving plates aside, half the fun of the meal will be deciding which dinner guests should get which plate. We recommend giving the sins to the guests who have a better sense of humor, so as not to bring down the mood of the party. The plates are £25 per pair and the serving plates are £50.
