Fashion Forward Ikats

Prepare to be dazzled. The 60 ikat robes in Washington D.C.'s The Textile Museum's show, "Colors of the Oasis: Central Asian Ikats," are a riot of sun-splashed color. The rich jewel toned robes, appealingly hung in the round so you can view them from all directions, are from the museum's Megalli Collection. Most are 19th century ceremonial robes from Samarkand, Bukhara, and the silk weaving centers in the Fergama Valley in Central Asia.

Tell Us Everything, Fashion Consultant Amanda Brooks

Filed under: Apparel, Tell Us Everything

Amanda Brooks

The fashion world knows Amanda Brooks and, although you may not know her name, you've likely seen her - on the pages of the J.Crew catalog; appearing in a TOD'S ad campaign, and sporadically being featured in fashion magazines and on society pages. The former creative director of Tuleh, Vogue writer, and consultant to top designers recently published her first book: "I Love Your Style," a conversational style guide that mixes personal history with lessons from style icons. Brooks' writing is down to earth, yet she can't help but come off as the cool, in-the-know sister. She cites examples from styles worn by her famous friends and other fashion icons she admires using photos of herself and others at A-list parties looking great and daring to be different.

She was born into it: Raised in NY and Palm Beach, her mother's bridesmaid dresses were designed by Lilly Pulitzer. After Brooks' book was released Sept. 9 she made appearances at top boutiques across the country. Channel threw her two parties, Tod's threw three and Diane Von Furstenburg, who wrote the forward, hosted the book launch party in New York. We caught up with Brooks, now Fashion Director at talent agency William Morris Endeavor, and asked her to Tell Us Everything. Here's what she said...

Diane von Furstenberg to Design Suites for Claridge's

Filed under: Decor, Luxury Travel & Hotels

Famed fashion designer Diane von Furstenberg will unveil her first interior design project this summer, a series of rooms and suites for Claridge's, the ultra-luxe Art Deco hotel in London's Mayfair. Von Furstenberg, a longtime guest and friend of the hotel, will bring her iconic prints and bold colours as well as original pieces of furniture to the legendary landmark. Claridge's and von Furstenberg have enjoyed an intimate relationship since the 1970s and some of her past collections have even been inspired by the renowned hotel. "One of my fondest memories was when I was in London as a young, independent businesswoman and stayed at Claridge's," the designer recalls. "I knew I had made it. To me, Claridge's is the most glamourous hotel in the world; I regard it as my home away from home."

The Fashion Statement: Farewell, Bryant Park

Fashion weeks gets underway here in New York today but, even before one model could place a stiletto on a crisp white catwalk, the mood was bittersweet.

That's because this week will be the final time the collections will be unveiled in the Bryant Park Tents. Bryant Park management had long been locking horns with fashion week producers, complaining that American fashion's biggest spectacle was growing too large and restricted public access to the park. In September, the shows will move to Lincoln Center's Damrosch Park, a venue that can better accommodate the twice-annual event.

The shows have been held at Bryant Park since 1993 catapulting more than a few designers' and models' careers and fostering many more memories. Several fashion insiders took the time to reflect recently and the Tents will be adorned with their quotes. Here, a preview:

"I began modeling in 1965 when there were only shows in Paris. When Bryant Park started, fashion became a world event. It was exhilarating." -Lauren Hutton

"Bryant Park became the beacon of what New York fashion stands for-an industry that's fearless, tireless, and always moving forward." -Anna Wintour, Vogue

"Bryant Park became the heartbeat of fashion twice a year... we will miss it!" -Diane von Furstenberg

"Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week is when all of New York comes together to shine a light on its family of designers. We share a runway, a calendar, an audience-and of course, the spotlight. As a result, it has given us a world presence. There's no better way to support our industry than when we stand together as one." -Donna Karan

"I'll always have fond memories of the Tents in Bryant Park, it was one of the earlier highlights of my career." -Gisele Bündchen

"I propose that a plaque be mounted in the park as a legacy: 'The Bryant Park Tents 1993-2010 branded New York as the indisputable Fashion Capital of the World.'" -Tim Gunn

Stephanie Woven Leather Clutch, Handbag of the Day

Diane Von Furstenberg Clutch Handbag
Diane Von Furstenberg went a little 'hippie chic' with this creation, the Stephanie Woven Leather Clutch. It's generously sized for a clutch at 11" x 6" x 3" but manages not to look clunky thanks to an elongated shape and pleasantly distracting texture and tassel. That texture comes from multicolored metallic leather woven together in a color scheme called "Sunset Metallic." It has a white mesh lining on the interior with a logo-embossed plaque, and the top closes via zipper. A bag that's eye-catching but not obnoxious. $395

Claridge's: London's Art Deco Jewel

Filed under: Luxury Travel & Hotels

Located in the heart of Mayfair in London, Claridge's hotel is nominated for a Readers' Choice Award for Best City Hotel.

The historic art deco hotel is known for its award-winning service and luxury and is a key part of London's history. Stars, statesmen, socialites and the crowned heads of Europe have enjoyed this five-star hotel for more than 100 years. Its grand hallways and staircases were designed to be wide and spacious so that ladies wearing wide skirted ball gowns, with crinolines, would be able to walk two abreast.

The hotel's history dates back to the first half of the 19th century when it was founded by William and Marianne Claridge ran a hotel at 51 Brook Street. The five next-door houses were the famous Mivart hotel. In 1854 the Claridges bought the Mivart buildings and the combined property became known as Claridge's, late Mivart's until Mivart's death in 1856. The ultimate seal of approval came in 1860 when Queen Victoria and Price Albert arrived at the hotel. They were visiting the Empress Eugènie of France, who had made Claridge's her winter quarters.

In 1893 Claridge's was bought by Richard D'Oyly Carte, owner of the Savoy. He commissioned the designer of Harrods to rebuild the hotel from the ground up. The new Claridge's opened in November 1898. Through the years, the hotel became the destination of choice for royalty. During World War II, many exiled royals made their way to Claridge's, including the Kings of Greece, Norway and Yugoslavia, as well as the Queen of the Netherlands. In 1947, a diplomat telephoned the hotel asking to speak to "the King". The polite response was "Certainly sir, but which one?"

Tradition has it that when two Kings arrived on the same day both demanding to stay in the Royal Suite, a diplomatic incident was avoided by a quick thinking manager who advised them both that the ceiling had fallen down and gave them equally large suites on separate floors instead.

On July 17 1945, the hotel's Suite 212 briefly became part of Yugoslavia. Sir Winston Churchill made the concession so that Crown Prince Alexander, the heir to the throne, could be born on Yugoslav soil. According to legend, Claridge's staff placed a clod of Yugoslav soil under the Queen's bed during her labor. Of course, even Winston Churchill, himself, took up residence at the hotel. At the end of the war, when unexpectedly defeated in the General Election of 1945, Churchill had to leave Number 10 Downing Street in a hurry. While temporarily homeless, he took a suite at Claridge's, "with a rather poignant view back to the Palace of Westminster".

Claridge's, which is considered to be the most glamorous hotel in all of London, has been the destination of choice by many of America's Hollywood royalty, too, from Yul Brynner and Audrey Hepburn to Cary Grant, Katherine Hepburn and Bing Crosby. Spencer Tracy once said, "not that I intend to die, but when I do, I don't want to go to heaven, I want to go to Claridge's." The hotel remains a favorite for celebrities with regular visitors ranging from Nicole Kidman and Naomi Campbell to Jude Law and Mick Jaggar. Model Kate Moss has been known to celebrate her birthday at the hotel.

The hotel recently redecorated its Fumoir bar, which features new Lalique chandeliers, bar fittings, glassware and votives, in addition to a cocktail menu featuring authentic 1930's. The new Lalique enhancements make this aubergine-leather clad, candlelit bar the chicest and most luxurious venue in town. Claridge's restaurant, was frequently visited by Her Majesty the Late Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mother. One particular table in the restaurant was referred to as the Greek Cantina because Aristotle Onassis regularly chose to sit there. Today, the restaurant, Gordon Ramsay at Claridge's, features modern European dishes in a lavishly redesigned space by New York architect Thierry Despont.

The hotel has 203 rooms rooms including 67 suites, each of which were individually decorated and designed. One-third of the hotel's suites were recently re-designed or restored by Viscount David Linley while designer Diane von Furstenberg is creating 10 guest rooms and suites for the hotel, which will launch in June. Each room comes with fresh flowers and the latest entertainment equipment. Rooms start at 490 pounds while 1-bedroom suites start at 1,700 pounds per night.

Vote now for what you believe is the best of breed for each of the Winter Travel categories. Readers' Choice Awards for the Best in Winter Travel will be announced on January 31st.

Diane Von Furstenberg Hayworth Tote, Handbag of the Day

Diane Von Furstenberg Hayworth ToteThe Diane Von Furstenberg Hayworth Tote is a fresh new take on the traditional tote bag, and one that will serve you well into the new year.

This bag won't arrive in time for the holiday parties, but it's just as well -- this bright white tote with rainbow stitching should be saved for 2010, when white (as well as beige, brown, and silver) will be everywhere and the splash of color will be much needed. We love the candy colors, the structured shape, and especially the eyelet details (but we'd leave that shoulder strap at home).

This bag would make a smashing holiday gift for someone who has everything; it's colorful and cheery, and there's something inherently luxurious about this much white leather.

The Diane Von Furstenberg Hayworth Tote is available for pre-order from Neiman Marcus for $725.00, and expected to ship no later than December 17 (just in time for Christmas).

Diane von Furstenberg Stephanie Slouchy Hobo, Handbag of the Day

Diane von Furstenberg Stephanie Slouchy HoboThe Diane von Furstenberg Stephanie Slouchy Hobo is a perfect bag to follow this season's texture trend. This roomy hobo may look like it's covered in metallic chains, but it's actually chain-woven black metallic leather. How hot is that?

This metallic "Stephanie" number also comes in Silver and Gold, but we like the black -- a perfect, demure complement for all the 20s-style gear you'll be wearing around the holidays. The bright silver hardware is attractive and interesting, and the bag is lined in durable beige canvas. The texture makes this bag transition easily from day to night, even at 13"H x 17 1/2"W x 5"D.

The Diane von Furstenberg Stephanie Slouchy Hobo is available from Neiman Marcus for $875.00.

Diane Von Furstenberg Celebrates New Park With Beach Towel

The High Line park in New York City opened its first section this week. The unique park was created from an old elevated rail line. On Monday, Diane von Furstenberg was among the notables in attendance for the ribbon cutting and press conference and her fashion line has created a limited-edition plush beach towel inspired by the railroad tracks. The towel sells for $75 and a percentage of the proceeds go towards Friends of the High Line, the organization charged with raising funds for the park and overseeing its maintenance.

In the Bedroom with Dolce & Gabbana

The world's top fashionistas spend their lives designing things for other people, but they often reserve their true talents for themselves. A glimpse into their personal lives - and not in the tabloid sense - often reveals more about their real sensibilities and style than their runway creations, which are often masked by more commercial concerns.

Marie Bariller's gorgeous new book, Dressing the Home: The Private Spaces of Top Fashion Designers affords a rare glimpse at the interior lives (so to speak) of some of the biggest names in fashion. Included are two houses owned by Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana, who wrote the introduction to the book, and who describe their aesthetic as "luxury that combines romanticism with irony, always executed with care and professionalism."

We also get to see where style stars like Christian Louboutin, Gilles Mendel, Jacopo Etro, Catherine Malandrino, Patrick Cox, Betsey Johnson, and Diane von Furstenberg, among others, hang their hats. As you might expect, they're pretty talented at dressing their homes as well.

Blogging from the Luxury Summit: the Recession, the Russian and the Icon

In a world where the economy is an everyday concern, the luxury market is worried. Not overly worried, since as we've seen, the very high-end of the market remains secure but the recession was a factor in every panel held by the Luxury Summit. One of the strongest messages we keep hearing is that today's rich are not yesterday's rich; they are "middle class between the ears (not thinking rich)."

Certainly, we've lost the meaning of luxury but overall luxury is in the eye of the beholder, one man's luxury is another man's necessity. One of the hidden benefits of hard times is that they help to define luxury, for example a $500,000 ski condo is having a hard time selling right now but a $2 million ski condo is an easy sell. What was perhaps most interesting at this conference is watching the juxtaposition between stories of extreme luxury spending, fears of a recession and the theme of the conference: philanthropy. In this second post from the Luxury Summit held by American Express Publishing at the Four Seasons in Westlake Village, CA I will look at some recent statistics regarding the wealthy, see my first real live Russian billionaire and pay homage to the one and only Diane Von Furstenberg.
