David Stine Woodworking: The Art Of Listening To Wood

Furniture designer David Stine doesn't just design the tables, desks and other wood furnishings in his line, he selects every tree, mills every board and crafts each piece of furniture by hand to create a unique work of art. Stine harvests much of his high quality lumber from his family's own forests in Illinois. He mills the logs at his woodshop, basing his designs on what the wood reveals rather than the other way around. The process is akin to the way artisan gemcutters work with mineral rough, the piece is evaluated for size, angles, etc. so that the maximum beauty of the natural material is revealed. It's no surprise that his work has been featured in Forbes Life and other places and that his clientele includes writer and pundit Andrew Sullivan, Crate & Barrel owners Gordon and Carole Segal and actor and activist Michael J. Fox.

In addition to the limited edition pieces in his portfolio (check out the gallery below) clients may custom order furniture to their exact specifications. All pieces are hand crafted using traditional methods of joinery and construction and environmentally safe finishes. The pine cant bench shown above sells for $1,150.

Hedi Slimane Designs Furniture

Photographer turned furniture designer Hedi Slimane's newest endeavor into the world of office furniture is a structured and geographical one. Using ebonized stainless steel, his creations include desks, chairs, and shelves that use a pattern of angles, squares, and thin lines to create a modern minimalist appearance. Although sleek and beautiful to look at, and sure to make a statement as part of a decorating scheme, I can't say they look comfortable at all to actually sit on or use. But then, that's obviously not the point.

Jet Age Furniture

Another great find from the CA Boom show was Jet Age Furniture. The company is the work of two metal-loving childhood friends, Damien Mavis and Pat Arnold who both wound up with degrees in Mechanical Engineering. They have created a line of sleek and simple aluminum and glass desks and tables that are meant to match with Emeco chairs.  The dining table/desk shown here sells for $1995 and would look great in downtown loft. They also sell an aluminum and glass table that can be purchased with separate Tic Tac Toe Xs and Os.
