Paul Smith Violet, Handbag of the Day

Designer Paul Smith aims to combine his very Englishness with a bit of the unexpected. In this bag, he gives a rather traditional shape a jolt with color and pattern that just barely misses being psychedelic. It's the subtler hues that give this bag a calmer feel and I think the look is charming. The swirl pattern is printed on a soft Italian leather, accented with brushed gold-tone hardware. It has a large zip top closure under two buckle straps with magnetic closures. Inside, the bag is lined in cream colored canvas and has a cell phone pocket as well as an additional side pocket. It's a proper bag with flair. £475.00.

Fendi Hologram B.Mix Bag, Handbag of the Day

It is hard to describe this bag without making it sound like a mess: pink and blue beads criss-crossing strips of Fendi logo fabric, brown leather trim, silver-tone hardware and generous amounts of contrasting top-stitching all set against a transparent patterned vinyl. Regardless of how it sounds, I think the overall look is surprisingly pretty. It is from Fendi's 2007/08 Autumn Winter collection and I suspect there will be no middle ground on this one - you will either love it or hate it. Personally, I love it. $1634.78.

Pierre Hardy Leopard Saddle Bag, Handbag of the Day

I just never get tired of leopard print. I like it in my home and I love it on my bag. This slim shoulder bag from Pierre Hardy goes with just about everything and is sized just right at 17" wide by 12" tall. Black patent leather trims the strap, the flap and continues around the bottom of the bag. The very long shoulder strap makes it perfect for carrying across your body when you need to keep your hands free and the simple flap closure can be managed with one hand as well. At $1590, consider it an investment in a bag that will never go out of style.

Maxx New York Nadine Flap Satchel, Handbag of the Day

It's 95 degrees where I live, but just looking at this bag makes me think of the falling leaves and cool breezes of Autumn. Although I am not ready to pull out the boots and sweaters just yet, this wine colored suede satchel would look great when the time is right. Trimmed in crocodile embossed leather, the roomy bag sports gold-tone hardware and pockets galore: two zippered pockets on the front as well as interior zip, cell phone and MP3 pockets. With 8-inch-drop rolled leather straps, the bag will sit snugly just under the arm. Also available in other cool-weather colors: black and chocolate. $298.

Jill Stuart Freja, Handbag of the Day

I absolutely love the color of this bag. It's available in black and cream, but this deep red really makes the gold tone hardware pop. The oversized buckles are decorative as the bag secures with a simple snap flap closure. The 9 1/2 inch chain link strap is well-designed with a comfortable leather strip where it rests on your shoulders. If it is simple and classic you are looking for, this is your bag. $325.

B. Romanek Caiman Rock Star Clutch, Handbag of the Day

Here's a clutch that is different in several ways. First, it is purple. You might call it lavender, but the designer calls it purple. Second, it is a wrap clutch, which winds up to close with a flap that looks a bit like a crocodile tail. The bag looks a little odd when fully opened, but all snapped up, it looks rock-star worthy. The matte finish is not too shiny and at 10 inches wide and 5 inches deep, it's just the right size. Barney's has it for $2195.

Brighton Kennedy, Handbag of the Day

This bag is from Brighton's contemporary collection, but I think it looks pretty traditional. The color is raisin and the look is classic, with double shoulder straps and a top-snap closure. Lots of bags these days have multiple, heavy charms hanging from them, but this has just the one simple heart and key. Together with the silver-tone buckles, there is just the right amount of shine. The interior is lined in Brighton's beautiful signature paisley print and features a zip pocket, a zip divider and a key ring. Does anyone actually use the key rings? $350.

Perla Lichi Designs, Handbag of the Day

Perla Lichi, better known for designing the interiors of upscale homes and hotels around the world, is now channeling her creativity in a new direction: handbags. She recently launched her new line of hand-knitted bags featuring crystals, ribbons, feathers, jewelry and even venetian masks. Here are two - the Harlequin and the citrus-hued Decor Princess. Both are typical of the line, showcasing streamers of colorful ribbons and rigid beaded handles. Lichi's unique bags come with a Certificate of Authenticity signed by the designer herself. And if you don't see one you like, she will create a custom bag just for you. $295.

Francesco Biasia Look At Me Bucket Bag, Handbag of the Day

Okay, a show of hands - who likes this bag? I'll go first and state for the record that I think it's a lovely combination of materials and I like the natural color. The drape of the reptile-embossed leather belt around the raffia fabric gives the bag an easy, casual look and the gold-tone hardware is just right. The interior is pretty as well, with a floral lining, a center zip divider and slip pockets. $145.60.

Versace Hair-Calf Satchel, Handbag of the Day

The ruby color of this bag might be better suited for next season, but that doesn't detract from its beauty. The large logo medallion and silver-tone hardware look gorgeous against the deep red and the tonal leather trim has a bit of a metallic shine. It zips at the top and the interior features a black logo jacquard lining with a large zip pocket as well as a cell phone pocket. Why wait until autumn when you can have it now? $2,576.

Bulga Multi Pocket with Resin Chain, Handbag of the Day

Pockets are good, and this bag has plenty of them. Outside, there's a hinged pocket at the top and a hidden zipper compartment under one of the front flaps. Inside are two patch-pockets as well as another large zipper pocket.

But you probably aren't looking at the pockets, are you? Even the silver metallic leather cannot compete with the over-sized resin chain draped across the front of this bag. Resin, of course, is a fancy word for plastic. Fortunately, the chain is detachable. $725.

Letty Designs Manhattan Bag, Handbag of the Day

Is this not the most beautiful bag you have seen all day? The gorgeous golden brown metallic fabric with embroidered floral design is stunning. But accented with a generous sprinkling of brown and topaz Swarovski crystals, this evening bag becomes a work of art. Carry it by the crystal studded handle, or over your shoulder with the optional chain shoulder strap. Lined in black velvet, this bag is simply brilliant. $250.

Etro Patent Top Handle Bag, Handbag of the Day

Etro's Spring/Summer 2007 leather collection is big on the buckles and this bag is no exception. Against the black patent leather, these over-sized buckles will be obvious from across the room. Think of them as conversation pieces for your body. The bag is large at nearly 11 inches square, has double handles and a zip top. $1300.

Vivienne Westwood Pirate Collection Tote, Handbag of the Day

Vivienne Westwood may be known for her funky fashion sense, but this bag looks positively sedate. From her Spring/Summer 2007 Pirate Collection, the gold tote features a classic shape with a retro color scheme. There is something about the gold cotton fabric that brings to mind drapes, but the orange leather trim does funk it up a bit. With just touch of silver on the hardware and the trademark orb, the bag is lined in a logo print and has two interior pockets. $589.57.

Cole Haan Village Hobo, Handbag of the Day

This bag has a bit of a hippie vibe. From the Village Collection, the leather hobo sports a perforated, scrolled fern design on the front and and visible stitching all around. The back of the bag features a gold tone logo plaque and the interior is lined in natural canvas. With an inset zipper closure at the top, the bag also has all the necessary pockets: zip, patch and cell-phone. The whip stitched shoulder strap has a 10 inch drop and the bag itself measures a roomy 17 inches. On sale now for $237.
