We're back in Darien, Connecticut today for another classic New England farmhouse. Today's home is on 5.47 acres in the rolling green back country. The home has pieces that date back to the mid 1700s and the lowslung rough-hewn wood beams and large brick fireplaces clearly mark it as an older New England home. There are a total of 12 working fireplaces. The property has a barn, pool, large terraces and an enclosed herb garden. Inside there is a garden room, library, redone kitchen and a large master bedroom with walk-in closets and French doors. This one is listed at $5.2 million.

Today's Colonial style home in Darien, Connecticut is worth check out as much for its traditionally charming brick exterior as it is for its cool gray modern interior. Outside it's just as classic as can be right down to the pineapple molding above the columned door. Inside the home has been renovated with an urban elegance that reminds me of a layout that one might have seen in Metropolitan Home magazine. The sophisticated palette of dark wood contrasted with the soft dove gray furnishings and simple art creates an uncluttered and calm space. The six-bedroom home has views of Scott's Cove on Long Island Sound and comes with a beach and small dock. There is room enough for a new owner to install a pool. It is listed at $7.25 million.

Peter Gogolak in Darien, Connecticut, Estate of the Day

If today's estate doesn't look like a retired football player's house that's because Peter Gogolak gave up the football game a while ago (he was a kicker for the New York Giants and the Buffalo Bills in the 1960s and 1970s) and focused on the home renovation business. The Wall Street Journal's Private Properties reports that Gogolak and his wife Kathy buy, renovate and then sell homes in Connecticut. This five-bedroom home in Darien, Connecticut is their 11th. They bought it in 2005 for $3 million and spent eight months restoring it. The 1920s Colonial has a lovely location on a hillside with just under two acres of gardens, stone walls and lawns. The property includes a pool with a waterfall. The interior is classic Connecticut with a formal living room, hardwood floors, French doors, and a large kitchen with an adjacent family room with fireplace. This home is listed at $5.5 million.

It looks to me like the owners of this home in Darien, Connecticut were dreaming of warmer climes. The Mediterranean home has a summery look that belies its New England location. The home has striking views of Long Island Sound and plenty of large windows to enjoy them from. The home is a newer build and the has a frankly feminine feel from the scrolling iron staircases to the charming sky mural on a ceiling in which three cherubic angels surround a light fixture. The wood-paneled library is a touch of old New England but the rest of the house is light walls, windows which beg to be open to ocean breezes, and sweeping verandas for outdoor lounging. This blockbuster summer home is listed at $15.5 million. After the jump, charming, gracious, lovely but I bet it's chilly in the winter.
