Top US Architect, Daniel Libeskind, Working On Italian Bridge Project

In a recent interview with the New York Observer, top architect Daniel Libeskind said that his "only New Year's resolution is to continue having as much fun and seeing the world change in positive ways." He seems to be off to a good start. Officials for what would be the largest suspension bridge in the world say that the architect, whose projects include One World Trade Center and CityCenter in Las Vegas, is working on plans for a complex to be built on one side of the Straits of Messina Bridge.

The bridge will link the Italian mainland to the Island of Sicily. Libeskind's compound would be built on the Calabrian side of the span and would include shops and hotels. Work is expected to begin by the end of the year on the massive highway and rail bridge that will connect Calabrian "toe" of the Italian peninsula to the port of Messina, Sicily. This is an idea thousands of years in the making with everyone from the ancient Romans to Charlemagne eager to bring these land masses together. In the last 20 years the project has been through a series of stops and starts but Silvio Berlusconi vowed to restart the project. It is expected to cost over six billion euros and could take at least five years to build. Even though it will save hours in transit time not everyone is a fan of the project. Some see it more as an expression of Berlusconi's ego rather than something that will be of maximum benefit to the area.

The Spirit House Chair

Starchitect Daniel Libeskind has branched out into furniture. The architect who is famous for his angular building style has worked with Toronto furniture designer Klaus Nienkämper to create the limited edition Spirit House chair, inspired by the angles of Liebeskind's design for the new Michael Lee-Chin Crystal addition at the Royal Ontario Museum. The Spirit House name refers to the heart of the Michael Lee-Chin Crystal, where the support beams create an open space.

The chair is made of 14-gauge stainless steel with a brushed finish and weighs 180 lbs. The chair can be used in five different positions (good luck moving it around) and can also serve as a side table. 13 Spirit House Chairs will be placed on the first level of the Spirit House, three will be placed at the front entrance to the Lee-Chin Crystal and two will be on display in the new ROM Museum Store and will be available for purchase after June 2nd through KLAUS by Nienkämper. The chair sells for $12,000 Canadian.

Check out the striking Daniel Libeskind design for a new condo complex. Where do you think this one is going up? New York? Miami? Chicago? No, this project is coming to Sacramento, California's capital, an area not known for radical design. BCN Development is planning the 38 story tower which is conveniently located near the state Capitol building. The modern condos feature Bulthaup kitchens with Miele applicances. Amenities include a pool and hot tub with a lounging area, a roof garden, massage and steam rooms, a gym, concierge and climate-controlled wine and cigar lockers.
