Today's home in Dallas, Texas is one that we first heard about in 2007 when it was listed at $17.5 million but it has since had a deep discount. The home belongs to Phil Romano, a restaurateur who is behind several restaurant chains including Romano's Macaroni Grill. This eight bedroom home is on 4.69 acres.

In 2007 the Real Estalker reported that Romano purchased the 4.7 acre property in 2000 for $4,535,300. The home was built in 2001 and is one of the most riotously colorful luxury homes around. The bold style combines Italian, modern and Southwestern styles with plenty of art and custom decor. There is a large living room with a paneled grid ceiling and a large limestone fireplace. The den offers sweeping views of the grounds and an adjacent library has floor-to-ceiling bookshelves. The sun room with expansive walls of windows is connected to the main living areas by two galleries for art, all with hand painted wood ceilings. The formal dining room is barrel-vaulted with a tile ceiling and a view through glass walls to the wine room which is the size of a small retail store. The kitchen features commercial-grade appliances such as banks of Traulsen refrigerators and freezers, and a Vulcan oven and stove, combine with stainless steel cabinets, long stretches of stainless counters, and a massive walk-in pantry. A climate-controlled pavilion gives four different views of the grounds.

All the bedrooms are on the second floor of the home. The master wing has two bedrooms, den and exercise room. Most amazing is the two-story barrel vaulted master closet. This wing also has a family room with a hand-painted ceiling. The second bedroom, designed for a child has a loft space and vaulted ceiling. There are four guestrooms plus two additional bedrooms in the connected apartment, each with its own private bath. The World Series starts tonight in San Francisco and in just a few days, Texas will have its turn to host fans. The Ritz-Carlton, Dallas has announced a weekend of baseball-themed treats. The sports-inspired treats will be offered this Saturday, Sunday (Halloween) and Monday, based on availability, when the Texas Rangers and San Francisco Giants square off near Dallas. On October 31 and November 1. Sunday and Monday-night guests wearing either a Texas Rangers or San Francisco Giants cap or other apparel item when checking into The Ritz-Carlton, Dallas will receive a certificate for one complimentary breakfast to be enjoyed either in-room or at Fearing's Restaurant.

The Ritz-Carlton, Dallas also has a squadron of "baseball concierges" to answer guest questions about games, teams, players, TV broadcasts and baseball history. The minute the Texas Rangers clinched their long-awaited birth in the World Series, the hotel went into high gear, preparing detailed baseball information to be shared with several hundred hotel employees via advance instruction in their regular training line-ups. The hotel's front-line employees have been given advanced training provided personally by the hotel's senior rooms leadership staff and via a baseball-specific Guest Relations packet.

Fearing's Restaurant is offering a "Claw and Antler" hot dog combo in its Rattlesnake bar. The Claw and Antlers" are new set of gestures that have taken the American League-West by storm. If a Texas Ranger make a positive offensive play he makes the claw sign. The "antlers" signify a speed-related player feat like a fast run. Rangers' utility player Esteban German launched this hand-signal trend while playing Triple A baseball in Oklahoma City last season. At Fearing's, the Claw is a Chicago-style hot dog with sweet relish, pickled serrano peppers, sliced tomato, chopped onion, and yellow mustard, while the Antler is a chili dog featuring chopped onions, shredded cheddar cheese, and yellow mustard. Fearing's will honor visitors from San Francisco with a house cioppino inspired by northern California's fresh seafood delicacies. Mercy Wine Bar: A Stunning Selection

Mercy Wine Bar in Dallas, Tex. is nominated for a Luxist Award for Best Wine Bar.
Dallas is perhaps best known for barbeque, the Cowboys and Lee Harvey Oswald. But thanks to Mercy Wine Bar in nearby Addison, Texas, oenophiles can add another highlight to their list. And with a stunning selection and intimate ambiance, Mercy is an easy choice as a Luxist nominee in the best wine bar category.

On April 15th 1964, Roy Orbison recorded the song "Pretty Woman." He probably had no idea that a few decades later his line, "No one could looks as good as you – mercy," would inspire the name of a Dallas wine bar. Sure enough, Orbison fan Glen Agritelley chose the name Mercy as a tribute to the singer. After a stint at Microsoft in the late 1980s, Agritelley cashed out and invested in a racquet club, a clothier, and finally, a wine bar.

Agritelley's vision for Mercy Wine Bar was drawn from his globetrotting observations. Italian mosaics and styling give the bar a European feel, while modern flourishes inspired by bars in Miami and other U.S. cities add a distinct American flair. Different rooms give guests an array of options: up front are classic dining tables with cloth linen, followed by a scalloped bar perfect for small groups. The lounge area behind the bar makes for a more casual place to relax with a glass of wine.

Unlike most establishments where wine is chosen as an accompaniment to food, Mercy's clients are encouraged to select wine first and food as a complement. With 100 different wines available by the glass and another 50 by the bottle, there are plenty options from which to choose.

Vote for the wine bar that you believe is the best of breed. The voting period runs through April 30 and winners will be announced on May 1.

Chateau du Lac, Estate of the Day

Take a little bit of France, a whole lot of Texas and you get Chateau du Lac, a French-inspired compound on Grapevine Lake in Dallas. This sprawling seven-bedroom castle is on ten acres that include a bridge house, gate house, guest house and two swimming pools. This is luxury on a grand scale. There is a wine cellar which has the interesting feature of having holes for wine bottles right in the brick wall. The Moroccan-themed media room is draped in gauzy fabrics. A marble bathtub sits on a pedestal facing a fireplace with a chandelier overhead. And, as a reminder we are in Texas, there is also a trophy room with animal heads and medieval-style sconces. A long-columned hallway recalls Citizen Kane's mythical Xanadu. The home is a pastiche of many different styles but the overall effect is pure money. Will anyone be willing to pay $18.5 million? Stay tuned.

News Flash: A Golf Course Opens Near Dallas

Filed under: Sports, Real Estate Developments

Old American Golf Club Now that the Tiger scandal is, for the moment at least, losing its roar, here's an only slightly less shocking bulletin from the world of golf. At a time when course construction projects have stalled and country clubs are opening their gates to the hoi polloi, The Tribute, a lakefront golf community a half-hour north of Dallas, is completing work on what by early accounts is an impressive new eighteen.

The layout is called the Old American Golf Club, because it pays homage to the country's golden age of golf architecture (roughly 1910 to the mid-1930s). In those days, without the ready use of bulldozers, course designers such as Donald Ross and A. W. Tillinghast relied largely on the natural contours of the land. Their example inspired Old American's designers, Tripp Davis and the PGA Tour pro and Dallas native Justin Leonard. The course, which hosted preview rounds this fall and will open officially next spring or summer, sports a low-slung, old-style appearance.

In what is surely a nod to the economic times, Old American--like its celebrated British-inflected sister course, The Tribute--will be open to the public as well as to residents of the development. (A boutique or mid-sized hotel is also planned.) Whether the new golf course will help sell the faux English cottages and French provincials in the 1,200-acre community remains to be seen.

AT&T Puts Its Name On Performing Arts Megaplex

We've become accustomed to sports venues selling naming rights but increasingly it's not just the stadiums that get the big deals. Performing arts centers are getting in on the act too. It was recently announced that the new performing arts complex in Dallas, Texas which is set to open October 12 will be called the AT&T Performing Arts Center. The $354 million facility will offer hundreds of performances every year in four different venues and a ten-acre urban park.

It has not been revealed how much AT&T is spending for the honor. Most of the funds for the center have been raised through public donations and the funds from AT&T will help boost the operations budget. The center is part of a growing trend of entertainment facilities which are branded and for technology companies entertainment venues have particular allure. Nokia in particular has lent its name to several theaters across the United States. Given the incredible downturn in private donations to the arts over the past year as well as a trimming in city, state and national arts budgets, it's easy to guess that this will be an ongoing trend.

Helio Castroneves Takes A Turn As A Chef

Filed under: Dining, Celebrity Shopping, Sports

Race car drivers often do a variety of things to promote a race but handsome racer and Dancing with the Stars Helio Castroneves can now add sous chef to his resume. This week saw him cooking with chef Stephan Pyles of Stephan Pyles Restaurant in Dallas as part of his promotion for the upcoming Bombardier Learjet 550k at Texas Motor Speedway on June 6. Wearing a chef's coat, Castroneves cooked up several meals and was served a chocolate cake in honor of his recent birthday. Castroneves is feeling good after a jury acquitted him on six counts of tax evasion and hung on the conspiracy charge.

Stephan Pyles serves food that he terms New Millenium Southwestern Cuisine, a fusion repertoire that mixes Tex-Mex cuisine with touches of other global flavors. His restaurant includes a tapas-ceviche bar and dinner entrees include housemade boar sausage and pickled peaches, beef tenderloin with sweet potato chilaquiles and pineapple mole, spit-roasted chicken Paneer-Peruvian potato salad and young coconut Madras curry, and seared red snapper with aji-creamed corn and crab ceviche.

Elm Hollow, Estate of the Day

Today's Mediterranean style home in Dallas is notable for its exquisite interior design. Designer Deborah Owens has enhanced the design by architect Robbie Fusch to create an elegant and refine home. The home was the 2008 LUXE Showhome. One thing that really impresses me about the six-bedroom home is the use of the color blue, from cobalt blue and turquoise accents to sky blue walls, the use of blue ties the rooms together and creates a nice counterpoint to the mostly beige decor.

The home is built around a sunken central courtyard which is set 11 feet below ground level to keep the outdoor area 15 degrees cooler than outside areas above ground, a nice feature for Texas summers. The courtyard has a double-sided fireplace. The home includes a theater and game room with a kitchenette, a spa and exercise area with a steam room, and a wine cellar with dining area and an eight-car garage. The ground floor includes the dining room, great room, two-story library and the master suite and two kitchens. The home also includes a mother-in-law suite, elevator and a smart home system that will send you a message when anything is wrong with the house no matter where you are. It is listed at $11.5 million.

George And Laura Bush Buy A Home In Dallas

One of the biggest real estate scoops was gotten by Candy Evans of Dallas Dirt this week who reported that President George W. Bush and Laura Bush have picked up a home on Daria Place in Dallas's Preston Hollow neighborhood. The new Bush home is far more modest than the White House. It is a four-bedroom, ranch-style home that according to the Dallas Morning News, appraises at nearly $2.1 million, but sold for considerably more. It is more than 8,500 square feet and has an estimated annual tax bill of about $44,000.

Traffic has already jammed up the home's quiet cul-de-sac with people stopping by to check out the house. The home was purchased in the name of longtime Bush family accountant Robert McCleskey and backs up to the estate of Mr. Bush's friend and former business partner Tom Hicks (an estate that includes a handy helicopter pad). Bush may be buying a house next door for added privacy.
