Branches Cutlery

Nature offers inspiration to many artists just as it did for Romain Gauthrot who designed the elegant Branches Cutlery for Silodesign. Branches Cutlery is a series of four cutlery sets with five pieces each made of superior quality 18/10. The sets include one knife, one "living" fork whose shape changes in each set, one soup spoon, one dessert spoon, and one espresso spoon, all encased in a polished metal box for storage. The beautiful lines are modern yet peaceful, functional and fascinating. The complete set is available for $458.

Hand Forged Silver Tea Spoon

Next time you're sitting down for tea or coffee (like I am right now!) take a good look at the spoon you're using. Does it have much character? Individuality? Is it making the whole experience a little better just because it's there? Ha, that last one might be pushing it a little, but the point is that good silverware can really increase the "luxe" factor of any meal or dining experience.

This hand-forged silver tea spoon from Etsy is made by the seller from a block of sterling silver, with a slight pattern from hammering left visible on the handle and in the bowl of the spoon, and also the creator's initials and date stamped into the back. I think one (or a few) of these would make a great gift. $75 each.

Unique Cutlery by Zaha Hadid

I, for one, am a fan of understated design elements -- the things that don't jump out, but get admired more by chance by people who notice details. And as far as I'm concerned this cutlery set designed by architect Zaha Hadid, with the fluid and unique design, is one of those items. Artistic yet surprisingly simple and functional, the two spoons are my favorites. They seem fun to use but in a sophisticated way -- reminding me of grown-up versions of the silly-straw, but without the cheap plastic and obnoxious colors.

The $250 set should be available starting this month, but with a very limited U.S. distribution.

Saladini Cigar Cutter

This cigar cutter from Italian company, Saladini cutlery is probably overkill but I love the positively lethal look of this device. One imagines that in a ganger movie it could be used to great effect. The cigar cutter is made in Tuscany and has an olive wood base and two different sizes for cutting (I don't think I've ever seen a cigar as large as that second hole though). It sells for $189 with an olive wood handle or $185 with a horn wood handle. The company also makes a variety of interesting ktichen knives including a charming mezzaluna with a rooster shape.

Electric Guitar Cutting Board

The single most boring thing in the kitchen is a cutting board. Usually, it is a piece of plastic that sits near the sink. Recently, I got a bamboo one, which is very beautiful in addition to being sturdy, but it is still plain. I’m thinking about investing in something fancier, something more fun. Something like the Country Toys Electric Guitar Cutting Board, which is unusually stylish for a wooden kitchen accessory. The cutting board is 3/4-inch thick, so it will last for years of use and, if necessary, refinishing. Handmade from gorgeous purple hardwood, this would look great on a kitchen counter and take up a lot less space than a real guitar and in addition to being more wallet-friendly at $60. There is also an Acoustic Guitar version, for you more traditional types.

Ribbon Project Cutlery

These unique pieces are a new set of cutlery that are more about aesthetic than utility. The LA division of Apartment Therapy brings out attention to these pieces from the Ribbon Project. They are stainless steel, made by Makoto Yamaguchi and sell for around $15 each. I'd love to see video of someone trying to eat with these but they sure are pretty.
