Cuervo y Sobrinos Historiador Cronógrafo Steel Watch

Cuervo y Sobrinos Historiador Cronógrafo Steel Watch
Seeking to revive an original Cuervo y Sobrinos watch design from the 1950s, the once Cuban, now Swiss brand will release this Historiador Cronografo watch in steel for 2011. The watch comes in a slick looking 40mm side steel case that while feeling retro, doesn't feel boring. This is thanks to the "exaggerated" lug structures. Using pomme style hands, the dial is pretty easy to read with its applied stylized hour markers and black face. A ring of red gives it a sporty appeal. The dial will alos be available in white.

The case has a sapphire crystal and is water resistant to 30 meters. It contains a Swiss made Dubois Depraz calibre 2099 automatic chronograph movement. While any actual connection to Cuba no longer exists with the brand, we can at least pretend right? Look for the Cuervo y Sobrinos Historiador Cronografo Steel watch soon.

Cuervo y Sobrinos Pirata Limited Edition "Complete Calendar" Watch

Cuervo y Sobrinos Pirata Limited Edition
Offering a slight variation on their Pirata watch line, Cuervo y Sobrinos offers this limited edition Pirata "Complete Calendar" watch with a Swiss ETA Valjoux 7751 movement in it. Limited to just 200 pieces, the watch (now available) is 45mm wide in titanium, steel, and bronze. The latter material being only rarely used in watch cases. I wrote more extensively on this Cuervos y Sobrinos Pirata watches here.

The watch has a series of design cues meant to evoke a pirate and navigational theme. The Cuervo y Sobrinos brand started in Cuba, but is now operated by a Swiss company. The Valjoux 7751 movement is an automatic, and has a series of functions built on to the base 7750 chronograph. The watch adds an annual calendar, moonphase indicator (done a bit differently in this watch), as well as a synchronized 24 hour hand (for AM/PM indication). The watch is quite cool with some neat design features and comes on a comfy rubber strap. Price for this limited edition Pirata is $9,500.

Cuervo y Sobrinos Celebrates Spain's World Cup 2010 Victory With Watch

The win for Spain's "La Roja" soccer (football) team in the 2010 FIFA World Cup was an extremely joyous occasion for the Spanish people. While not a Spanish brand, Cuervo y Sobrinos has released a new (likely limited edition) watch in honor of the national team. Cuervo y Sobrinos is historically a Cuban brand, but now owned and operated by the Swiss. Special watches made for winning teams are often successful, especially since Spain gets to hold the title for at least 4 years until the next World Cup games.

Based on their Robusto collection of watches, the "La Roja" watch is done with as much as is possible (and not be a silly looking red watch). In an 42-43mm wide steel case, the dial looks to be done in lume with red Arabic hour numerals and a "La Roja 2010" statement printed on the dial to remind you the purpose of the watch. It is matched to a red strap, and the caseback likely features a commemorative engraving. Inside the watch is a Swiss ETA 2895-2 automatic movement. Details are slim at this point, but the price will be 1,500 euros.

Cuervo Y Sobrinos Watches To Open Shop In Havana, Cuba

The modern version of Cuervo Y Sobrinos was started in the late 1990s, but is based on a Cuban watch brand that started, and was popular, in the pre-communism days of Cuba. In the late 1950s when Cuba's government changed and Fidel Castro entered power, the original Cuervo Y Sobrinos watch brand was no longer. With the name, comes the taste and style of old Havana in all new Cuervo Y Sobrinos watches - each watch even comes in a humidor. Regardless, today Cuervo Y Sobrinos has no actual presence in Cuba - but that is about to change.

The new Cuba, while still communist, is opening up its doors again slowly. Havana might never be the play city for the rich and famous as it used to be, but signs of new life can be seen. In a few months, now Swiss watch maker Cuervo Y Sobrinos will open up a new boutique store in Havana. Finally the original Cuban watch brand returns to Cuba in the city that helped make it famous. Pictured above is a Cuervo Y Sobrinos Esplendidos Monopulsante watch. Prices for the brand range from about $2,500 and way up.
