Snapper Creek, Estate of the Day

Today's home had a $1.5 million price cut a few months back but that's not the only reason I'm featuring it. This large home is in the gated community of Snapper Creek Lakes in Coral Gables, Florida. This is an older subdivision, originally developed in the 1950s. It includes a privately owned boat basin with a full-time dock master and security. It offers direct access to Biscayne Bay. Today's home is a six-bedroom plantation style home with delightful wide porches. It's a colorful home with plenty of hand-painted details including a vine mural in the wine cellar. Although it has a luxurious feel with a formal dining room and grand spaces, there is also a warmth to this home that makes it more appealing than some of Florida beige faux Tuscans. The property also includes a pool, dock and two-bedroom guest house. Other nice features include a media room, family room and a generator to cope with potential power outages. This property is now listed at $10.999 million.

Nick Buoniconti in Coral Gables, Estate of the Day

It's football season and today we are looking at the rather fancy home of one of the greats of the game. Nick Buoniconti is a member of the NFL Hall of Fame and was a legendary linebacker playing for both the New England Patriots and Miami Dolphins as well as Notre Dame. He is also a former host for HBO's "Inside the NFL" and is part of the Miami Project to Cure Paralysis, a group he joined after his son suffered a paralyzing spinal cord injury in a football game.

Buoniconti and his wife Lynn bought today's home in Coral Gables, Florida back in 2005 for $1.98 million. They renovated the home planning to move their from their home at the Grand Bay Residences in Key Biscayne, Florida but as they told the Wall Street Journal, they decided they couldn't leave the water. The Coral Gables home has views of the 16th green of the Riviera Country Club golf course. The home features inlaid parquet floors in a cross hatch pattern, wood-burning fireplace, grand salon, formal dining room, library/sitting room, a gourmey kitchen with an adjacent prep kitchen and butler's pantry and a master bedroom with a sitting area. The grounds includes a plunge swimming pool and guest house. It has had a recent price reduction to $3.475 million and is listed with Audrey Ross of EWM Realtors.

Java Head, Estate of the Day

A lot of the estates I show you in Florida are newer homes but today's vintage beauty in Coral Gables was built in 1936. Java Head is a beautiful old estate. The three-acre property includes gardens, a tennis court, pool house, a four-car garage with a separate apartment and a protected dock that offers your boat open access to ocean. The seven-bedroom main house has Art Moderne and Art Deco notes. Of particular charm is the massive living room with the 23-foot cathedral ceiling. The lower half of the room is encased in dark wood panels and an old stone fireplace is a relic from another time. A round doorway leads to a mural-covered dining room. This unique home is listed at $13.9 million.

Alex Rodriguez Selling His Homes, Estates of the Day

Baseball player Alexander "A-Rod" Rodriguez has been in the news a lot lately and it hasn't been for his skills on the baseball diamond. A-Rod is currently going through a divorce and is rumored to be Madonna's new man. He's also dropped a bit of real estate on the market. The Real Estalker recently had a piece on the New York and Florida properties he has up for sale.

Rodriguez and his ex-wife Cynthia have put their four-bedroom unit at the Trump Park Avenue on the market for $14 million. The apartment has been renovated for today's casual buyer with a large family room and open kitchen space. The listing for the apartment is here.

He has also put his home in Coral Gables, Florida on the market. The Mediterranean home built in 1952 was purchased by the Rodriguez family for $12 million in 2005. The home sits on the water with more than an acre of land and has six bedrooms, a pool and a three-car garage. The grand home does have some rather dramatic choices in wallpaper but the pool area and outdoor space is lovely. It is listed at $14.876 million.

UPDATE: As of January 2009, Rodriguez has done some major price chopping. The NYC apartment is down to $10 million and the Coral Gables home is listed at $12.3 million, not much more than he paid for it.

SECOND UPDATE: The NYC home has sold and the Coral Gables home is now listed at $9,999,999 million.

Upswing, Estate of the Day

This one is fun just from an art standpoint. "Upswing" is located in Coral Gables, Florida and is described as an art collector's dream. This four-bedroom modern home is full of light and angles with plenty of white spaces and glass walls. It's hard to take it on its own merits without considering the vivid contemporary art that dominates the space. In some cases, particularly the very bright office space, the colors may be a bit too much for someone with gentler taste. And the current furnishings don't look too comfortable, even if I am smitten by the bench that looks like a woolly bear caterpillar. I do, however, love the patchwork tile in the kitchen. Outside the home's gardens are home to orchids, a pool, fountain and a waterfall. It is listed at $4 million.
