Beyond the Classics: The New Conran Shop at ABC Carpet & Home

You can spot the new Conran Shop's pedigree in a flash: the design icons - Mies, Starck, Saarinen- are still there. But that's not all. Sir Terence Conran, who opened his first shop in 1973 in London, scours the Milan furniture show looking for the bold and the new. Now he's expanding into eco-design and a whole new generation of treasures with his shop on the lower level of ABC Carpet & Home. Upstairs ABC is what some might call fussy, flirty, and feminine. At the new Conran Shop, the vibe is masculine, cutting-edge, showcasing furniture, lighting, household and specialty items that make you want to deposit what you live with now to the Salvation Army and start over again.

Limited-Edition Contemporary Furniture Not Fairing Well

Over the weekend, the biannual 'Design Miami' fair celebrated the extreme end of design, notably limited-edition contemporary furniture that often doubles as art, but the show certainly felt the economic effects of late. With less participating galleries than last year, lowered prices by many designers, and fewer sales it seems this narrow niche of luxury is facing a downturn similar to those seen in the fine art, luxury real estate and automobile industries. Even though many are holding back their spending there are still some patrons who have not lost their desire for expensive decor as witnessed by the purchase of a taxidermy fox with gold maggots in its ears by Kelly McCallum for $20,000 (pictured above).

Nobody's Perfect Double Bed

At first glance, this bed appears to be a cushioned platform in front a headboard consisting of two colorful, if oddly shaped, windows. But look closely and you will see what I missed at first - the headboard is meant to represent a couple kissing. Now, that is a romantic bed. Designed by Italian architect and artist Gaetano Pesce, the European double bed is made from resin panels, joined together with nylon pins. If you are sleeping alone, consider the single version. $12,000 for the double.

Edra Flower Collection Furniture

A post on Pure Contemporary led me to the Flower Collection from Edra. Their Rose Chair by Masanori Umeda looks so lusciously comfortable. How delightful to curl up in the center of a plush red flower. The collection also includes an anthurium coffee table and the soshun chair which looks like a daisy.
