Peter Gogolak in Darien, Connecticut, Estate of the Day

If today's estate doesn't look like a retired football player's house that's because Peter Gogolak gave up the football game a while ago (he was a kicker for the New York Giants and the Buffalo Bills in the 1960s and 1970s) and focused on the home renovation business. The Wall Street Journal's Private Properties reports that Gogolak and his wife Kathy buy, renovate and then sell homes in Connecticut. This five-bedroom home in Darien, Connecticut is their 11th. They bought it in 2005 for $3 million and spent eight months restoring it. The 1920s Colonial has a lovely location on a hillside with just under two acres of gardens, stone walls and lawns. The property includes a pool with a waterfall. The interior is classic Connecticut with a formal living room, hardwood floors, French doors, and a large kitchen with an adjacent family room with fireplace. This home is listed at $5.5 million.

Regis Philbin in Greenwich, Estate of the Day

I've been missing the real estate intelligence of Bob Goldsborough over at Big Time Listings after the site was unfortunately hacked. But now he's back with a vengeance, dishing out an impressive amount of celebrity scoop. One of the biggest is the listing for Regis Philbin's Greenwich, Connecticut home. Regis has been saying for a while on his show that he was selling his home but no one had dug up the listing until now. The home was built in 1980 and is on 5.68 acres that include a tennis court, pool, gazebo and gardens. The house itself was featured in 2002 in Architectural Digest, and includes a formal dining room, paneled living and media rooms, a library with a wet bar, a family room, a gourmet kitchen and a breakfast area that opens to a covered terrace. There are four bedrooms including a master suite with a sitting area, fireplace and his and hers baths. The lower level of the home includes exercise and recreation areas. Regis bought in 1992 for $2.5 million and is now asking $5.4 million for the home.

Update: This home is now listed at $4.9 million.

Wisteria Hill, Estate of the Day

Wisteria Hill in New Canaan, Connecticut is a 1910 estate drenched in genteel charm. The large home sits on 8.66 acres that include landscaping that appears straight out of a garden magazine. The home is out of the pages of Architectural Digest. A particularly charming detail is the white and blue tile fireplace surround in the breakfast room. Often window treatments give me the vapors, but in this case, the vibrant window shades offer a nice pop of color in this very elegant home. There is a two-bedroom guest house over the large garage. This home is listed at $11.2 million.

50 Cent's Home, Estate of the Day

Today's estate in Farmington, Conn. is one of the legendary symbols of excess. Mike Tyson owned this home in the past but it currently belongs to 50 Cent, who bought it for just $4.1 million. Tyson's ex wife originally wanted $25 million and so the home was a bit of a discount considering that is has more than 50,000 square feet of space.

Fiddy is said to have spent a few million on the house but as the Real Estalker Mama mentions, it's hard to find it when looking at the photos of the place. It seems to be completely devoid of taste and personality. Sure it's got a disco the size of many homes but the overall effect is rather bland. The home has 19 bedrooms, four kitchens, a movie theater, full gym, five Jacuzzis and an indoor shooting range. The pool area is P.I.M.P. -worthy with an infinity pool and a Playboy Mansion-style grotto but the interior of the house seems to be decorated more like a businessman's hotel than a rapper's paradise. Sure the two-story lobby is lavish and there is a dining room with a Baccarat chandelier and a formal living room overlooking a one-acre koi pond, but overall, this place disappoints. It is listed at an ambitious $18.5 million. After the jump, I'm guessing the fountains are all Tyson's legacy.

UPDATE: This home is still on the market for $14.5 million.

Darien, Connecticut, Estate of the Day

It looks to me like the owners of this home in Darien, Connecticut were dreaming of warmer climes. The Mediterranean home has a summery look that belies its New England location. The home has striking views of Long Island Sound and plenty of large windows to enjoy them from. The home is a newer build and the has a frankly feminine feel from the scrolling iron staircases to the charming sky mural on a ceiling in which three cherubic angels surround a light fixture. The wood-paneled library is a touch of old New England but the rest of the house is light walls, windows which beg to be open to ocean breezes, and sweeping verandas for outdoor lounging. This blockbuster summer home is listed at $15.5 million. After the jump, charming, gracious, lovely but I bet it's chilly in the winter.

Pemberly, Estate of the Day

Pemberly, an estate on four acres in New Canaan, Connecticut, may look old but it's brand spanking new. This estate which was styled on the lines of an English country estate has older details such as Flemish bond brick and stone chimney stacks and the Welsh Pengrid slate roof. The home boasts many  hand carved and curved antique timbers and offers storage for those who are fans of wine and literature: there is a two-story, 5,000 volume library and a wine cellar suite which holds 5,000 bottles. The master suite has a Juliet balcony, surround sound theater and secret library access. The great room has church-like architecture including soaring arches, a forty foot ceiling, massive fireplace and a minstrel's balcony. The home is listed at $12.5 million. After the jump, a few shots but not a lot of good interior looks at this intriguing home.
