Unfinished Aspen Property Up For Auction

A prime piece of Aspen real estate will be auctioned off in August through Sheldon Good & Company. The site was at one time the location of The Stage 3 Movie Theater and now contains a partially-built, three-story building (rendering shown above) which, when completed could house 30,000 square feet of residential, retail and office space. The building wasn't completed because it has been involved in Chapter 11 bankruptcy proceedings. Around 15 percent of the total construction, including the basement and foundation, was completed before the owners suspended construction and filed for bankruptcy.

flying dog ranch
With Bootjack Ranch finally sold off we need a new high-priced Colorado ranch to obsess over. Fortunately there's another hound in the hunt. Today's estate, the Flying Dog Ranch, is a total of four parcels of 245 acres with possibilities for riding and hunting. The property is located in Woody Creek, Colorado, the home of the late Hunter S. Thompson and actor Don Johnson. Nancy Pelosi also has a home in the area.

The Flying Dog Ranch is one of the last remaining original ranches in the Aspen area and is adjacent to National Forest land with private access into the forest. It has extensive water rights, pastures and stables. The property includes the original homestead cabin built in the 1800s as well as the log cabin-inspired main house. The main house has log ceilings, a gym and unique spiral staircases with steps of logs that lead to an open second floor. This home is listed at $56 million.

Bootjack Ranch Finally Finds A New Owner

Luxist reader Stephen led me to a Wall Street Journal article detailing the sale of one of our favorite estate of the day properties. Coloado's Bootjack Ranch was listed for $88 million in 2008 but it has sold to Texas energy billionaire Kelcy Warren for $46.5 million. The transaction is believed to be the highest amount paid for a property this year.

Bootjack Ranch is a roughly 3,500-acre ranch near Pagosa Springs, Colorado. The ranch is located in the southern San Juan Mountains and ranges over acres of meadows, forests, lakes and streams. The main house is a 13,800 square foot residence made of rustic logs, timber and stone. The home is decorated in classic Western luxe including a dining room fixture shaped like a canoe and fireplace screens that feature the ranch brand.

The property includes multiple guest cabins, a separate lodge, offices and manager's housing that can accommodate over 50 guests. The most extravagant feature on this property is the 12,000 square foot spa and aquatic center that seems more like a resort pool than one for private use. The ranch is a private residence but has also hosted concerts sponsored by Music in the Mountains and is a retreat for missionaries and business leaders.

Snowmass Village, Estate of the Day

I'm showing you today's five-bedroom home in Snowmass Village, Colorado as much for the decor as for anything else. This modern home has direct ski-in/out access to Snowmass Mountain and has glass retractable walls that bring the outside in. The ultra-contemporary home has reclaimed wood floors and a large stone fireplace in the great room. Bright white walls and lights set into the beams provide an art-gallery-like feel. The home's luxury finishings include a Minotti Cuchine kitchen and Boffi bathrooms imported from Italy. The copy of Dwell casually dropped on a bed in the listing photo is no accident, the home's decor looks stripped straight from the pages of the magazine. A ball chair, Barcelona chairs, an Eames rocker are just some of the easily-identifiable design pieces. This home is listed at $8.9 million.

Mexican Architecture in Aspen, Estate of the Day

It's always a bit risky to brand anything as "in the style of" and architecture is an area where it seems particularly fraught. I've seen far too many faux Frank Lloyd Wright homes. This home in Aspen, Colorado takes its inspiration from Mexican architects Luis Barragan and Ricardo Legorreta. We've seen the work of each of these architects before. The Campbell Divertimento is attributed to Barragan while Ricardo Montalban's home was a Legorreta.

Looking at those two homes one can definitely see the inspiration. This five-bedroom home offers clean, squared spaces, flat terracotta walls and an interesting use of water features. The overall effect is a lot more Southwestern than anything usually seen in Aspen. The home is on 5.73 acres and has two master suites, a media room with cherrywood cabinetry, professional kitchen, a large central gallery for displaying art and a fitness room, air conditioning. The use of Colorado sandstone floors and earth tones creates a tranquil feel. Windows of varying sizes from tiny squares to floor-to-ceiling view watchers make the most of the available light. This home is listed at $13.5 million.

High Meadows Ranch, Estate Of The Day

This home attracted me first with the news that it was a major price reduction. We all love a good deal and this home just had a $900,000 price cut. Real estate in Colorado does seem to be struggling in some areas. This home, near Durango, Colorado is a 8,275 square foot home in the gated community of High Meadows Ranch. The home sits on 60 secluded acres with views of the valley and Red Cliffs. The five-bedroom home also comes with one-bedroom guest quarters and a five-car garage. There is also a log cabin playhouse on the property. The home has large stone patios and a built in gas barbecue plus an outside kitchen. The entry has lighted rock waterfall and the home is wired for surround sound with 75 speakers throughout the interior and exterior of the home. Vaulted tongue and groove ceilings and sandstone accents highlight the gorgeous main spaces. It is now listed at $4,300,000. Considering what the McAfee mansion went for, I wonder if this one might go even lower. After the jump, check out the mural in the master bedroom.
