Massachusetts Castle, Estate of the Day

cohasset castle
It isn't everyday you see a castle for sale especially without having to cross an ocean to see the open house. In Cohasset, Massachusetts a modest five bedroom, five bathroom home boasting 8,800 square feet and over ten acres of property is currently listed for $2.9 million. This colonial style, single family home built in 1900 includes thirteen total rooms, a three-car garage, four fireplaces and a finished basement. It evens lures a new home owner with nearby walking trails and only a couple of miles to the beach. Located at 211 South Main Street the stone and stucco exterior, dark wood interior, granite kitchen counters and period details throughout make this home at least an intriguing site that may require additional investigation.

(Unfortunately the images are not as large as most 'Estates of the Day' we share with you -- I guess that would be one way they could increase their chances of actually selling the home.)

$55 Million Estate For Sale In Massachusetts

$55 million cohasset
An impressive historical property has been listed in Cohasset, Massachusetts for a really impressive price, $55 million. The property is actually four properties on Cohasset Harbor and includes not just a 20,000 square-foot mansion but also the Cohasset Harbor Resort, and the Atlantica and Olde Salt House restaurant complex as well as the Mill River Marina. The area is a popular summer destination and the resort and restaurants have been the site of many weddings.

The property once belonged to Clarence Barron who bought Dow Jones & Co. in 1902 for a mere $130,000 and is considered to be one of the key creators of modern financial journalism. After Barron died in 1928, his stepdaughter Jane Barron tore down the original home and built the 45-room brick Georgian Revival house now on the property. She and her husband inherited Mr. Barron's stake in Dow Jones and their descendants sold the company in 2007 for $5.16 billion to News Corp. Her granddaughter lived in the house until her death in 1982.

Cary Point, Estate of the Day

This one in Cohasset, Massachusetts is an interesting example of what happens when an older house meets a new owner with a taste for the modern. This home sits on a promontory called Cary's Point, which overlooks Sandy Cove. The current owners bought the home around 2003 for about $4.75 million and gave it a total renovation and expansion. Believe it or not, this home was built in 1903-04 but has been completely renovated with new floors, new windows, new heating, audio, video and lighting systems and more. The details here are pretty fantastic; the kitchen counter for example appears to be composed of agate slices. The windows are all custom made with curving metal accents. There is not just a heated three-car detached garage but also a two-car garage with a turntable floor so the owner never has to back out of the garage again. The reflecting pool has a huge sculpture. The current owners have a taste for modern design and so the home is currently a showcase for all sorts of contemporary furniture and an expansive art collection. The property has a dining patio and gazebo with perfect views of the water. The property has access to two private beaches and two moorings. The owner is even offering his 46-foot Sunseeker powerboat along with the estate. The estate is listed at $19.5 million with Dean and Hamilton.

Lionsgate, Estate of the Day

We've covered an estate named Lion's Gate before but I much prefer this Lionsgate. It's a home built in 1904 which sets on the Gulph River in Cohasset, Massachusetts. The home has been restored to its early American Gothic Style by the current owners. The home takes its name from the iron gate which features two large stone pillars topped with lions. The nearly ten acre estate includes a rose garden, French parterre garden with quatrefoil fish ponds, arbors, carved stone lion's seat, a two-hole golf course and putting green,  as well as an inground gunite pool. The 16-room mansion includes old-fashioned details such as a parlor, a formal music space which opens to an enclosed porch and a wood paneled library. There are five bedrooms including a master suite that takes up the entire third floor. It is listed at $11.5 million. After the jump, New England Gothic gone light and airy.
