No one really carries checkbooks anymore but this pretty little Standard Flat Tigersnake Clutch by Carlos Falchi is pretty close to one with its slim fold-over design. It's slightly over-sized and features textural tigersnake finished with miscellaneous painted leaves for a tempered floral feel. It closes via magnetic snap closure and is lined in luxurious peach suede (I love suede linings), plus it comes with a short 14" chain shoulder strap. At only 12" x 5 1/2" x 1/2" deep it's not a roomy bag but a sleek, lightweight one instead. $595

Judith Leiber might be best known for her highly detailed and super-blinged out miniaudieres but here she's created a downright simple evening bag in basic black satin with only a few clear crystal embellishments, arranged in an architectural pattern on the front flap. Pair that with a detachable silver chain-link shoulder strap and the Crystal Embellished Satin Clutch has just enough sparkle to draw the eye but not enough to worry about seeming gaudy or overdone. It closes via magnetic press-stud fastening and is lined in pretty purple satin. $1,395

Oh what I would give to carry this Prada Raso Stone Clutch on New Year's Eve. The resin stones glisten so pretty and although they're not really Christmas colors (not to say everything has to be this time of year) they certainly are festive and full of happy party energy. Also available in shades of nude and shades of black it features a basic fold-over closure and does not have a shoulder strap so keep your hands clean or risk ruining the glassy lustre with fingerprints. It's also very tiny at just 7" long. $2,100

The Anya Hindmarch Multi-Glitter Clutch is sparkly enough to blind your rivals at this year's holiday party.

This face of this darling clutch could give a Twilight sparkly vampire a run for their money. It's not just the usual silver glitter, it's a rainbow of dazzling flecks that create this shimmering, metallic effect. Somehow, the red and goldtone clasp adds sophistication to the whimsical sheen, and the simplicity of the shape ensures that this will be perceived as fanciful, but not frivolous.

This clutch is just 9"W X 6"H X ¼"D, so it won't appear over-the-top. Truly, this achieves just the right amount of sparkle to draw attention (and compliments!) without being vulgar and obvious. Furthermore, with its rainbow of glitz, it complements just about any color with ... flying colors. (Sorry.) The gleaming facade also adds texture to an ensemble, and could easily take an LBD from humdrum to fabulous.

The bag is lined in gold metallic nappa. We are in love.

Derek Lam Albertine Leather Clutch, Handbag of the Day

The Derek Lam Albertine Leather Clutch is a fabulously modern purse, but perhaps it was inspired by the abstract architecture of Vienna's Albertina.

We love the diagonal line the zipper-edged flap creates in a gleaming goldtone, adding edge to this otherwise quite simple black clutch. This 10"W X 5½"H X 1½"D bag is made with soft Italian calf leather and is lined in a pretty peach tone. The zipper isn't the closure; it's a front pocket. The purse actually opens and closes with a magnetic snap.

Asymmetry is best when it's balanced, and this purse achieves that beautifully with a soft calf leather tassel banded in gold. It may just be a rectangular black clutch, but this purse will definitely turn heads.

Be & D Chain Strap Lambskin Clutch, Handbag of the Day

The Be & D Chain Strap Lambskin Clutch is a quintessential fall bag in luxurious chocolate with equestrian details. It also comes in black, but who could resist this bohemian brown?

This tactile spin on the classic envelope clutch features thick stitching, center ruching and chunky silvertone hardware. The look is clean and sophisticated, and relaxed, while obviously expensive. We are charmed by the chain link strap, and especially by how it attaches to the smart silvertone rings.

The soft brown lambskin clutch is 10½"W X 7¾"H X ½"D; a comfortable size for shopping and lunching. Be wary of the limitations of an envelope clutch, though -- if we saw someone stuffing this thing with objects too large for its delicate width, we'd feel justified in making a citizen's arrest (but we probably wouldn't).

Anndra Neen Metal Cage Clutches, Handbag of the Day

A metal cage clutch is not something you see every day. We were wowed by this pair from Anndra Neen we spotted on AHAlife. We never knew we wanted a metal cage clutch so badly!

These medieval-looking nickel silver alloy and brass clutches were found by AHAlife curator and editorial director Lauren David Peden in Mexico City, where the sister duo behind Anndra Neen (Phoebe and Annette Stephens, interviewed here) have quite the artistic pedigree: "Their grandmother was the artist and jewelry maker Annette Nancarrow and their grandfather was the avant-garde composer Conlon Nancarrow; the two lived in Mexico City in the 1930s and '40s, where they were friends with the likes of Diego Rivera, Frida Kahlo and Anaïs Nin."

The Rosette Small Leather Chain-Strap Bag is a small black leather bag made of one enormous rosette. Features are sparse on this one and include a detachable gold chain shoulder strap, zip-top closure with a designer-stamped pull, and a black satin-twill lining. Barely bigger than a fist it's a little cutie and could totally pull double duty as a coin purse when you're not using it as a clutch. $325
