Ebel Classic Sport Chrono Khaki Green Watch

Ebel Classic Sport Chrono Khaki Green Watch
Movado-Group-owned Ebel will release this pretty nice looking Classic Sport Chrono watch soon. Positioned as a more affordable model, the Classic Sport Chrono will contain a Swiss ETA quartz chronograph movement as opposed to a mechanical chronograph movement. Seen here is a delightful white and khaki green version, but I anticipate the collection to come in other colors as well in the future. The steel case has that Ebel Classic Hexagon shape, and is 41mm for this model. The watch has a sapphire crystal and is water resistant to 50 meters. The dial is complex and attractive, but does not detract from the legibility. The strap is rubber with vertical striping in green - which is matched by a green chronograph seconds hand. Not sure on pricing, but I anticipate under $1000.

David Yurman "The Classic" Ladies Watch

Filed under: Timepieces / Watches, Luxury Shopping

David Yurman
Still haven't gotten her something for Valentine's day (I know I haven't)? Well here is another option that shouldn't be too tough to find given David Yurman's pretty good distribution. This is "The Classic" watch that comes in 30mm wide and 38mm wide styles in steel or gold, or steel and gold. The name could be better (no idea who they trademarked "Classic"), but the styling is is certainly acceptable. The easy-to-read dial comes with optional diamonds (either all or mixed with Roman numerals), and is mother of pearl. Inside the watch is a Swiss quartz movement, and you can get the watch with the steel bracelet (my choice) or with an alligator strap. Price as seen is $2,600.

Harry Winston Avenue Classic Watch

Watches with designs coming from the art deco era are a mixed bag. Some with more modern looking elements that tended be either more minimalist or futuristic at the time are handsome watches still today. The perpetuation of that aesthetic is usually successful. Then is also the more decorated jewelry style items of the era that are often an extension of the belle epoque design era. Translated today, these designs are interesting, but certainly not for the mainstream. Harry Winston's new Avenue Classic watch for women is such a piece. Using an art deco era jewelry look as its foundation, Harry Winston imbues an American flavor as well into this "old time New York" celebration watch. Coming in a white gold case (36mm tall by 21mm wide), it is set with 4.7 carats of lovely diamonds. Another 124 diamonds are used on the dial in combo with either black or white mother-of-pearl.

The Avenue Classic comes with a black or white satin strap, as well as an optional blue alligator strap. It has a Swiss quartz movement inside with a small subsidiary seconds hand. The piece is interesting, but certainly an acquired taste.

Codex Classic, Chronograph, & Venus Watches

codex classic
Part of the Swiss Chronometric company, Codex is a new luxury watch brand with a cool look, and three initial models. The models are more or less differentiated by their movement, and share an interesting looking 41.5mm steel or 18k rose gold case. These are the Codex Classic, Codex Chronograph, and a prestige collection called the Codex Venus.

The Classic and Chronograph are pretty straight forward. The design of the case and dial is interesting. I think I would sport the look - though it is probably a bit too much, and too busy for some people. I really like the almost checker style bezel treatments. The Codex Classic has a manually wound ETA 6498 movement that has a subsidiary seconds dial. No idea why they didn't choose to use an automatic movement. At least the crown is large for easy winding.

On the other hand, the Codex Chronograph is an automatic. It has a specially modified ETA Valjoux 7750 automatic chronograph movement that has a periphery style date indicator and a moon phase indicator It is pretty nice, and I like the symmetry. Then you have the Codex Venus Master and the Venus Prestige. These two limited edition collections uses a newly finished vintage movement. The Codex Venus watches use classic Venus 203 manually wound movements that have the time, annual calendar, moon phase indicator, a some sense of vintage fun. The dials are also partially skeletonized. The Venus Master is limited to 100 pieces, these pieces come in 18k rose gold cases. The only slightly different Venus Prestige is just like the Venus Master, but is decorated with 431 diamonds on the side of the case, has a different dial design, and is limited to 75 pieces. Look out for Codex watches soon (well not likely any time soon in America).

Bovet Fleurier Amadeo 43mm Classic Convertible Watch

While Bovet continues to makes beautiful watches that are convertible by nature, they will never make pocket watches or most other wearing styles aside from being a wrist watch cool again. The novelty value in such watches is just that - the fact that people can show off their wrist watches as items of art that are inspired by pocket watches, that are actual small pocket watches, and can claim to be several things at once. Though when it comes down to it, Bovet still represents the brand that gives you the ability to wear small pocket watches on your wrist. Though that doesn't mean there is anything in-genuine about their timepieces being several things at once.

The new Amadeo Fleurier Amadeo 43mm Classic watch is a true pocket watch in style, complete with top mounted crown and protector. The case is all 18k red gold, filled with a high-end Frederic Piguet automatic movement (soon to be merely "Blancpain manufacture") with a 3 day power reserve, and a power reserve indicator on the dial. The subsidiary seconds dial sure helps enhance that pocket watch feel. Most of the time the watch sits mounted to a black reptile strap, looking uniquely classic. What other watches have serpentine hands that look quite this good?

Bovet hopes that once in a while you will take the Amadeo off the strap and either uses it on the chain or as a little table clock with its fold out leg stand. They even suggest to women to wear it as a pendant. How often a woman will want to lug a 43mm wide brick of gold around her neck is yet to be seen - though at least the watch will have a substantial feel to it. Bovet claims that the process of changing the watch into its various forms/uses is rather simple. That may be so, but the novelty of the item is worth more than its ability to go from pocket watch to mini desk clock. This is also the most simple Amadeo version, in the Amadeo collection. Each of which has the ability to be a convertible piece. Prices start around $34,000.

Lormarins 1200 Launch Leads £10M of Classics Through Mayfair

Filed under: Luxury Cars & Autos, Events

lomarins 1200

London's packed with exotic and classic automobiles, but the usual array was no match for the parade that drove through the city's Mayfair neighborhood the other day. Some £10 million worth of classic motors – including a 1932 Alfa Romeo 8C Monza and a 1957 Ferrari 250 GT Tour de France – were led through the streets to the home of fashion icon Alfred Dunhill by none other than former world champion Jody Scheckter in a 1952 Jaguar C-Type, with the South African ambassador riding shotgun.

The event was held to announce the launch of a new classic rally in South Africa. Modeled on the iconic Mille Miglia in Italy, the Lormarins 1200 will be held for the first time this October around the country's Western Cape wine region, with some 40-50 classics anticipated to participate.

BMW Launches New Divisions Dedicated to Classics

Filed under: Luxury Cars & Autos

bmw classics

It has never been a better time to own or race a vintage BMW. The German automaker has announced two new divisions specifically aimed at assisting the proprietors of its classic vehicles.

The first is actually an expansion of what was previously known as the Heritage Workshop. Previously dedicated to maintaining the company's own fleet of classic automobiles and motorcycles, the division has been re-christened as the BMW Classic Center, opening its doors to the public in the process.

In addition to servicing, certifying and even dealing in classic BMWs, the company's classics department has also launched a dedicated Motorsport Division. The new initiative, headed by a former BMW sportscar racing director, has been established specifically to cater to vintage racing machines from BMW and Mini, preparing them for revival events and classics rallies.

BMW estimates that some 600,000 of its automobiles and another 70,000 motorcycles built up from its foundation through the 1980s are still on the road, representing 10% of its historic production.

David Yurman Classic Moon Phase Watch

David Yurman Classic Moon Phase Watch
There is a reason this new watch from David Yurman has the word "classic" in it. This is because the design references not only the classic "triple calendar" look, but also a classic style and decor. Triple calendar refers to the fact that the watch displays the date, date, and month. It also has a moon phase display and of course the time. Thus, the timepiece has the unoriginal name of "David Yurman Classic Moon Phase."

In an 18k white gold case, the watch is 43.5mm wide - certainly modern in stature. The crystal is sapphire with an AR coating making for a nicely legible luxury watch. The only other thing it could have used to make the dial easier to read are lume covered hands. Still, the tapered and faceted hands look nice. The watch has an automatic Dubois Depraz caliber 9000 movement inside. This is an ETA 2892-2 movement with a module attached for the calendar and moon phase functions.

Around the edge of the watch on the side, you'll find the signature "rope" design that David Yurman is known for. The Classic Moon Phase is a handsome and competent watch that makes up with classic appeal, what it loses in lacking much originality. The strap is black alligator, and the watch should be available relatively soon.

2009 Mille Miglia to Highlight Classic Jaguars

Filed under: Luxury Cars & Autos, Events, The Classicist

Jaguar holds dear one of the richest of heritages in the automotive industry, and a not insignificant part of that history was forged at the Mille Miglia, one of the most grueling of races that took place between 1927 to 1957 through the Italian countryside between Brescia and Rome. Today the event is a revival of the iconic race of yore, and to celebrate its role in the original Mille Miglia, Jaguar is returning to the event with a convoy of some of its most treasured classics.

Included among the Jaguar factory team will be a long-nose D-Type, four C-Types and an original Mark VII sedan, some of which contested the race in the 50's. Jaguar's legendary test driver Norman Dewis, now in his 80's, will be participating, along with a fleet of modern XKRs and XFRs which Jaguar is sending along as support vehicles for the event, which takes place next month from May 13-17.
