Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG GT3 Chromed by Laureus

Filed under: Luxury Cars & Autos

Chrome has its place on the automobile, arguably more than anywhere else. But within reason, we'd assert. Yet owners of Mercedes-Benz automobiles – the top-shelf performance models, especially – have exhibited a unique tenacity for covering their entire cars in the stuff. Whether it's the Mercedes-powered McLaren grand prix cars or the SLRs in Dubai, chrome seems to have a unique way of spreading across the German vehicles. And the latest comes straight from the Father Land itself.

A promotional tool for the Laureus Sport for Good Foundation, this latest SLS GT3 race car was dipped in the shiny stuff and put on display at the recent German Grand Prix at the Hockenheimring, "mirroring" the finish on the foundation's sponsored DTM C-Class touring car. The organization, supported by Mercedes-Benz, promotes athletics as a solution for youth issues.

Tudor Heritage Chrono Watch - Big Deal?

tudor heritage chrono
Lots of people have been making a big deal out of the new Tudor Heritage Chrono watch. Yes it comes with that cool brown and orange "seat buckle" strap (metal bracelet as well), and looks '70s retro chic, but is it really that big of a deal? I got to check out this piece at Baselworld recently and don't understand all the fuss. For Americans, Tudor is a "baby" Rolex brand that is no longer sold in the US. Tudor pulled out of the US maybe 10 years ago or longer. Why? Not totally sure, but I can guess. Probably because the lower cost brand would either compete with, or lower the image of Rolex. Tudor watches are not made with the same high quality refinement that Americans have come to expect and enjoy from Rolex. Tudor watches are pretty much inferior, less expensive alternatives. So to protect the rock-solid Rolex image, Rolex probably decided to pull the Tudor brand out of the US.

While the Tudor Heritage Chrono looks decent enough, it is nothing special. For what it likely costs there are dozens of better options. The dial on the original is flat and merely printed, with the new version updated with applied hour markers and a removal of the cyclops. Finishing on the case is merely OK, and the hands and dial aren't spectacular in quality. I have a feeling that nostalgia is the best marketing force for timepieces like this. Once the initial "wow" of the design wears off, I don't think a piece like this has too much staying power on one's wrist.

The watch itself is 42mm wide and has an automatic 45 minute chronograph. Not sure what the movement is, but it is likely a modified ETA or alike. Probably an ETA 7734 or similar. There is a black on black or gray on black dial, and an interesting placement of a date magnifier lens at 6 o'clock. The bezel rotates in both direction, and looks a bit too retro if you ask me. Overall, not the worst watch over, but certainly not the "modern classic icon" people make it out to be, from a design and finishing perspective. See images of the new version in the gallery below.

Chromed-Out Lamborghini Murcielago Roadster

Filed under: Luxury Cars & Autos

A couple weeks back we wrote about a chromed-out Audi R8 supercar spotted in the UK which sparked a heated debate on automotive aesthetics. Now a chrome Lamborghini Murcielago LP640 Roadster (above) has been seen prowling around London where it's been turning heads to say the least as you can see. The Lamborghini is already eye-popping enough in normal livery for most folk, so the chromed-out version seems designed to scream "Look at me!" And maybe traffic-choked London is simply the wrong setting for this thing - perhaps it could be quite beautiful out on the Bonneville Salt Flats or something - but it seems to me we're straying into Prince of Brothels territory here. What do you think?

Too Beaucoup? The Chromed-Out Audi R8

Filed under: Luxury Cars & Autos

This chromed-out version of Audi's awe-inspiring R8 supercar has sparked debate amongst enthusiasts after having been spotted in the UK. The one-off vehicle, finished either in full chrome or polished aluminum depending on whom you ask with black intakes and sideblades is certainly an eye-catcher. This on a 414 hp car that in its factory form Autoblog decreed has "all the crowd-stopping presence of Heidi Klum walking down Wall Street wearing only a pair of Pradas and a matching handbag." Meanwhile, an outrageous convertible version of the R8 was recently spotted co-starring with Robert Downey Jr. while filming the upcoming Iron Man sequel.

The "Pantonova" Chrome Sectional Couch

Generally when I think of sectional seating a large, overly plush couch with too many throw pillows and a 90 degree angle comes to mind, the kind you sink into and can't get up out of without a helping hand. The "Pantonova" couch is something else altogether though, made of chrome steel it consists of 4 pieces that fit together to form a very cool looking (and also very uncomfortable looking) 74" sofa. Designed in 1971 it still looks modern and contemporary, and although cushions aren't included (you can ask about getting them though, for an additional charge) I think you would definitely need them (sitting on this couch without them brings to mind the infamous "waffle print thighs" that result from certain types of lawn furniture). $5,000

Leather Wrapped Portable Harddisk

If you have the need to fill some desk space with something wrapped in chrome and leather, but a Rubik's Cube doesn't seem practical enough, how about one of the new hard disk drives from Prestigio? Rather than fidling with a puzzle you could stash 40-120 gigs worth of whatever in your new gadget. The price is unannounced, but I'm going to side with Engadget on this, probably expensive. If you really need one, you can nab a pre-sale spot or just keep your current portable drive inside your coat pocket for roughly the same effect.

Chromed Turkey Lifters

For some reason, specialty Thanksgiving platters and serveware tend to be rather cheesy, with little pictures of pilgrims or cornucopias adorning them in the worst examples and an overly rustic look on the slightly more stylish side of things. Thankfully, there are at least a few good-looking serving implements out there, like these Chromed Turkey Lifters, which are simple, functional and attractive. They are made out of chrome-plated zinc and measure 4"x9.5". They will give you the support needed to lift even heavy turkey from the roasting plan to a serving platter, then can also be used to serve the individual slices to guests. Price: $18.

Ondine Krystal*ELS Chrome Showerhead

The Ondine Krystal*ELS Chrome Showerhead is a limited edition bathroom fixture, covered in Swarovski crystals with a gold finish, that combines a showerhead and a light source, giving the user the effect that he or she is showering with light as well as with water. The lights give off the illumination equivalent to a 75-watt light bulb, but an included adjustable color wheel allows the user to control the intensity of that light along with the color. For its part, the showerhead has 270 unique spray channels, contributing to what might very well be the ultimate shower experience.

Fruit Sink

The Fruit Sink is a stunning piece from Philip Watts Design. The circular basin sits on the counter, not inset in it. The interior of the basin is chrome plated, giving it a unique shine that sets of the unusual molding at the bottom of the sink. It is that textured base that allows the water to flow smoothly from the bottom of the sink in what otherwise appears to be a perfectly flat-bottomed bowl. With a wall-mounted faucet (not included), this sink would look beautiful in either a bathroom or in a kitchen. Price: £458.25.
