Chivas and Christian Lacroix Create 18-yo Limited Edition Scotch

Chivas Brothers launched its latest collaboration with fashion designer Christian Lacroix – a luxury limited-edition version of its super-premium Scotch whisky Chivas Regal 18-year old. Following on the success of the Chivas 12 year-old magnum by Christian Lacroix last year, the new edition of Chivas 18yo will be available in selected travel retail outlets starting in November.

Chivas Regal 18 Year Old by Christian Lacroix features a brocade presentation box in French jacquard, with a mirrored interior, while the Chivas label on the bottle is also embroidered in jacquard. The bottle features an intricate "metallic" design reminiscent of Lacroix's work on the Chivas 12-year old magnum. Only 3,000 bottles of the Lacroix 18 will be available, with around one-third allocated to the duty free market at a retail price of $495.

In November Paris Charles de Gaulle airport will mark the world premiere of Chivas 18 Year Old by Christian Lacroix, with the bottle making its debut at Aelia's stores in terminals 2C and 2E. The following month the limited edition will be rolled out to World Duty Free's stores in London Heathrow terminals 3, 4 and 5, before the product is launched in duty free outlets in Moscow and New York JFK. In the New Year, the limited edition will be introduced to key airports in the Middle East and Asia Pacific, including Dubai, Singapore Changi and Hong Kong.

Spirits Giant Diageo Sees 10% Gains in Rebounding China Economy

While sales of spirits are limping along in North America and Europe, the economic comeback in Asia, especially China, will fuel growth of about 10% for drinks giant Diageo in the next year, according to company officials. That's a big change from the 1% growth rate in the year ending June 2010.

The London-based drinks company, which owns brands such as Johnnie Walker, Guinness and Tanqueray, makes 10.4% of its group sales in its Asia Pacific region and earns just 6.4% of group profits there, but it is reinvesting heavily for growth, especially in China.

Chinese sales alone grew over 10% in the first six months of 2010 and the company expects the same in the year ending in June 2011.

Twenty-million new Chinese consumers reach legal drinking age in China each year, fueling growth for entry-level Western brands, as well as locally produced white spirits. But the rising middle class in China is also fueling demand for branded blended whiskies like Walker, as well as single-malts.

Johnnie Walker is the number-two scotch in China after Pernod Ricard's Chivas Regal, while it expects its recently introduced Canadian Whisky Windsor brand to be No 4 this year just behind Pernod's Ballantine's.

Chivas Brothers Launches Scotch Age Awareness Campaign

Even amongst casual celebrants, most consumers know that – amongst myriad other factors – an older whisky is generally a better one. In fact, in a recent market study, Chivas Brothers found that some 94% of consumers knew that. But far fewer – only 10% – knew that the age stated on a bottle of scotch indicates the youngest whisky in the bottle, not the average age (48% of those polled) or the oldest (35%).

Based on its findings, Chivas Brothers is undertaking a new awareness campaign to highlight the significance of age statements in scotch whisky. The Chivas group – part of Pernod Ricard, one of the largest liquor companies in the world – is among the world's foremost scotch distillers, encompassing such blend brands as Chivas Regal, Ballantine's and Royal Salute as well as a range of single malts including The Glenlivet, Abelour, Longmorn, Strathisla, Scapa and Tormore.

Most (if not all) of these labels feature age statements, and a range of marketing initiatives will aim to educated consumers as to their importance.

Royal Salute, part of the Chivas Brothers luxury whisky stable, is releasing a new limited edition Scotch in a gold and crystal decanter to honor the Queen of England. Dubbed 62 Gun Salute in homage to the fusillade fired at the Tower of London every June to mark the Queen's official birthday and accession to the throne, the exclusive Scotch was created with the input of four generations of master blenders and each whisky used is at least 40 years old. Presented in an exquisite hand crafted Dartington Crystal decanter decorated in 24 carat gold and crowned with a cut crystal stopper, the result of 40 hours of artisanal craftsmanship, it will go on sale at the end of the year priced at $2,200 per bottle. The most prestigious expression within Royal Salute's permanent collection, it is available in limited supply due to its exceptional age and extraordinary rarity.

Pernod Ricard Aims To Make Glenlivet World's No. 1 Malt

Scotland's Glenfiddich Distillery sells the world's best selling single-malt Scotch whisky. But French drinks giant Pernod Ricard aims to change that by building up its Glenlivet brand.

The company is pumping $14.7 million into Glenlivet to expand distilling capacity and storage/aging buildings. The investment is significant considering that many experts see an over-supply of whisky in the next five years.

The French group also markets blended whiskies Chivas Regal and Ballantine's. Those brands are recipes that rely on whiskies of different ages and from dozens of different distilleries. So, expanding production of those brands is easier than growing single-malt sales. To be called single-malt, though, the whisky must come from one distillery. A distillery such as Glenlivet blends its own whisky of different ages to create its "expressions," but they must all come from one distillery to be called "single-malt."

You can usually find liqueurs and some higher-end vodkas in mini bottles but aged whisky doesn't often go the mini route. Chivas Regal however, is launching a new mini that makes it easy to sample this scotch made from two Speyside malts, 18-year-old Strathisla and 18-year-old Longmorn. The Moodie Report says that the bottle hold nearly seven ounces and sells for about $30 and will be available in airports worldwide. A full-size bottle sells for around $120.
