North Dearborn Street, Estate of the Day

Today's Chicago home combines the best of the city that was with the city that is. The six-bedroom home in the Gold Coast area was built in 1877. The home's exterior has been substantially re-built including a new facade, front steps and 2-car garage. The interior has been meticulously renovated including kitchens, baths, windows and mechanical system. The design makes the most of natural light and modern decor but keeps charming older details such as a handsome mahogany-paneled living room, plaster moldings and an original staircase. The eat-in kitchen has a butler's pantry and the luxurious master suite has a marble bath. There are three or four additional upstairs bedrooms with newer baths, and a bright lower level with a family room with built-ins and another bedroom and bath. This home is listed at $4.95 million.

Chicago's Aqua Tower Will Be Home To Radisson Blu Hotel

Filed under: Luxury Travel & Hotels, Real Estate Developments

Chicago's Aqua skyscraper will be home to the first Radisson Blu hotel in the U.S. Chicago Breaking Business says that Carlson Hotels is planning a $125 million hotel for the first 18 floors of the 82-story building. A prior deal to have the tower host a Fairmont-brand hotel fell through several years ago. The building is also home to condo units. Current prices for units on the market range from $299,000 for a studio to $1,988,832 for a four-bedroom unit.

The building has won awards for its unique style that includes wave-like balconies. In 2009, Jeanne Gang, principle and founder of Studio Gang Architects earned a PETA Proggy award for using bird-deflecting elements in the residential building and hotel. The undulating exterior and etched glass help prevent birds from flying directly into windows. The building also contains 55,000 square feet of retail and office space. The hotel will open this fall and rooms will probably average more than $200 per night.

Pitcher Ted Lilly Lists Chicago Home

Filed under: Estates, Celebrity Shopping, Sports

Last month we learned that Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher Ted Lilly was putting his Chicago home up for market. Now, Housing Watch led us to the listing. Lilly, who used to play for the Cubs is yet another sports star who may end up losing money on a home he bought in a town he no longer plays for; Housing Watch reports that Lilly bought the home in 2006 for $2.15 million bit it is listed for $2.1 million with Mike Lavorato of d'Aprile Realty.

The 5,500-square-foot Chicago home is located near the Chicago Cubs stadium, Wrigley Field. The brick home on a corner lot has four bedrooms. Lilly and his wife, Natasha did the decorating and the home has a modest, casual appeal. Key features include a wine cellar, roof decks and a heated garage. It also has a self-contained backyard courtyard.

Florsheim Mansion, Estate of the Day

Today's home is a rather unique offering, an 11-room mansion on Chicago's Gold Coast. The Chicago Tribune reported that the mansion was designed by architect Andrew Rebori and later modified by architect Bertrand Goldberg. It was built in 1938 and known as the Florsheim mansion. The five bedroom home and separate guest house were linked in the 1950s by a long galley-style kitchen. The current owner paid $2.23 million to purchase the mansion in 2006 from then-Museum of Contemporary Art director Robert Fitzpatrick.

The home is broken into a number of innovative spaces. After you come in through the outer archway you enter into the office adjoined by the reception room featuring the signature Rebori glass block wash room and overlooking a garden and patio. The second level has an east-facing living room with fireplace and window overlooking State Street and Lake Michigan. The media room is adjoined with the two story family room. On the third floor there are three bedrooms with adjoining Ribori-style bathrooms. This property is listed at $2.5 million.

Chicago's Spire Is Kaput

It's looking like Chicago's much anticipated Spire won't be built. The plans for the dramatic Santiago-Calatrava-designed tower had it spiraling up 2,000 feet, making it the tallest building in the Western hemisphere. But now that Anglo Irish Bank Corp. has filed a $77 million foreclosure lawsuit against Irish real estate developer Garrett Kelleher it seems like the Spire will remain unbuilt, a symbol of ambition and aspiration that perhaps never completely lined up with reality. The project has 1,200 condos, around 30 percent of which were reported sold at one point including the penthouse, which was once priced at $40 million and bought by Ty Warner.

Ground was broken on the project in 2007 but construction had stalled out in 2008 when Calatrava filed a lien again Kelleher's Shelbourne Development Group. The lawsuit says that loans made to Kelleher's Shelbourne Development Ltd. matured a year ago and are in default. Anglo Irish Bank Corp. will likely take over the 2.2 acre piece of prime real estate.

The Chicago Tribune had reported last month that Calatrava has been working on an alternate plan, one that would involve two separate buildings and could be built in stages. That project might take advantage of the waterfront location to add a hotel, providing another potential revenue stream for the project. For now, though, a hole remains where a dream once was.

Jamie Dimon's Chicago Mansion Under Contract At Long Last

We like to think we might have helped JP Morgan CEO Jamie Dimon finally sell his mansion on Chicago's Gold Coast. After all, since we posted it as our estate of the day back in July there's been a flurry of attention about the lavish home and now after years on the market it has finally sold. The Wall Street Journal's Developments blog reports that after a nearly 50 percent price drop the eight-bedroom home the mansion sold for an undisclosed price. The WSJ quotes listing agent Janice Owen as saying the unnamed buyer "saw that it was priced correctly and he went for it." Indeed it does seem that he got a bit of a deal, the mansion was priced at $13.5 million in 2007. It was most recently listed for $6.95 million. Dimon paid $4.68 million back in 2000 but hasn't lived in the home in recent years.

The eight-bedroom home was built in 1870 but has been lavishly adapted for the modern executive. The home is spread out over four stories and includes a 900-square-foot rooftop terrace outfitted with ample seating in both sun and shade. There is a second floor master suite, wine vault, an elegant gold and eggplant media room and gym decorated with sports memorabilia and crowned with a starry dome.

Our next Chicago real estate mission: helping gum exec. Bill Wrigley Jr. sell off his raw space penthouse, still at $14 million making it the tops of the Chicago market.

How does JP Morgan CEO Jamie Dimon live? Quite well, thank you very much. We first checked out his home on Chicago's Gold Coast last year but a new listing offers a deeper look at Dimon's well-decorated environs. His eight-bedroom home was built in 1870 but has been lavishly adapted for the modern executive. The home is spread out over four stories and includes a 900-square-foot rooftop terrace outfitted with ample seating in both sun and shade. There is a second floor master suite, wine vault, an elegant gold and eggplant media room and gym decorated with sports memorabilia and crowned with a starry dome.

Dimon has been the CEO and president of JP Morgan since 2005 and has been an integral part of overseeing the $25 billion in TARP funds that JPMorgan Chase received. He hasn't lived in the Gold Coast home since 2004. He bought the home in 2000 for $4.68 million and originally put it on the market several years ago for $13.5 million. It was at $10.5 million when we checked it out last year but had a price cut earlier this year to $9.5 million. The only property listed for more in the area is Bill Wrigley Jr.'s raw penthouse space.

Winnetka Lakefront, Estate of the Day

Today's home sits on Lake Michigan in the posh Chicago suburb of Winnetka. What most endears this house to me is the fact that it truly seems designed for four-season living. The home has large windows that face the lake and a modern style that looks fresh and not chilly. There are seven fireplaces, a wine cellar, media room and a master bedroom with a sitting room.
