I live right smack in the middle of the Midwest in Iowa, and with the drastic weather this country has been experiencing (in this area it's excessive rain and flooding) crops are getting destroyed and many farmers are being threatened with the possibility of losing their farms, homes, and livelihoods. Farm Aid Inc. is working to help family farms across the country to stay alive, profitable, and on their land through a variety of efforts, including fund raising concerts from big names like Dave Matthews, John Mellencamp, Willie Nelson, and Counting Crows. Check to see if there's one your area!

The Nancy and Daniel Benoit Foundation (NDBF) is dedicated to preventing steroid abuse through education and raising awareness about the unfortunate effects steroids can have on users and those close to them. The foundation was started by Nancy Benoit's sister... Nancy and her seven year old son were murdered last year by her then husband professional wrestler and steroid abuser Chris Benoit. The one-year anniversary of these senseless deaths is this month, donating to their cause is a great way to help keep their memory alive while furthering education/prevention efforts.

Lifesavers Inc. is all about saving horses -- all kinds from unwanted or homeless domestic pets to retired working animals to wild mustangs. Created in 1997 it's a fairly young organization that serves as a source of news and contacts to other horse related campaigns (like this one geared towards saving America's wild mustang population) and events like this horse dancing competition and this women's empowerment workshop. They also provide links to horse rescue resources and homeless horses that are available for adoption -- I love horses and seeing these that need a home makes me wish I had room for a one!

The Search Dog Foundation, Charity of the Day

Filed under: Pets, Charity, Charity of the Day

The Search Dog Foundation (SDF) produces the nation's most highly trained search and rescue dogs. In times of natural disaster or terrorist attacks, chances are the dogs that will be coming to our aid will be graduates of this amazing organization. Training for each dog runs around $10,000, takes up to a year and requires extensive one-on-one time. The dogs that train at SDF are from shelters, which makes me love this organization that much more. SDF receives no government funding, and relies on the generosity of the public to keep the whole thing running!

Green Our Vaccines, Charity of the Day

Jim Carrey and Jenny McCarthy are hoping they can use their combined star power to help raise awareness this week for the Green Our Vaccines march and rally. Jenny's son Evan was diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder in 2005, and Jenny has been trying to help him and others by raising awareness of the possible link between autism and childhood vaccinations. The actors have joined with other national autism advocacy groups to press for the elimination of toxins from children's vaccines and to change children's vaccination schedules. It's always a heated debate, with facts and studies being presented on both sides, but a growing number of parents of autistic children believe that vaccines, especially those containing the mercury-based preservatives, are to blame for bringing on their children's autistic symptoms. Learn more about this weeks fund raising efforts here, and if you want to get involved in this movement now is the time!

Animals Asia Foundation, Charity of the Day

Natural disasters affect everything in their path, during the San Diego wildfires the news kept rolling footage of deer and other wild life running for their lives to escape the flames; talk about depressing. The recent earthquake in China has left many animals displaced and abandoned, not by choice but due to their owners having to flee rapidly. Animals Asia is a Hong Kong based charity determined to helping both animals and their owners during this time of need. Survivors in Sichuan's earthquake-hit region are lining up to hand over their dogs to Animals Asia for safe-keeping until they are back on their feet, while in the shelter the animals will receive medical care if injured and vaccinations to help prevent the spreading of disease. If you would like to help Animals Asia they could really use the extra donations right now!

The Animal Rescue Site has harnessed the immense power of the Internet and put it to use for a good cause. The site features a button that visitors can click as many times as they want to provide much needed food to the millions of animals in shelters across the US. The food is payed for by sponsors that advertise on the site, and it's distributed by volunteers. So, next time you're bored at work... click away! Like most charities The Animal Rescue Site has an online gift store, except this one is more like and online gift mall, I was blown away by how much cool stuff they have (jewelry, cute clothing, home and garden supplies and pet accessories and much more), I put the shopping link in my favorites, I will definitely check back next time I'm buying a gift! If you're going to be shopping online it feels good to know you aren't just fueling the mass consumerism lifestyle, when a portion of the money goes to a good cause it makes shopping so much more enjoyable! Plus I can justify spending more knowing the proceeds go to animals!
