Bentley Art Project Benefits Cancer Research

Filed under: Wheels, Auctions, Art, Charity

bentley art

There are few automobiles we could truly consider works of art. And most of them are expensive. Bentley surely ranks among them, but the British luxury automaker has taken things one step further.

In a new project, Bentley invited its designers to create works of art inspired by their work. No fewer than 22 participated, working in every medium from photography and painting to sculpture. The results are truly intriguing, and will be auctioned off on December 1 in a charity auction held by Bonhams to benefit cancer research at Manchester's The Christie Hospital. The event is by invitation only, but you can view the pieces in the gallery below.

Graff Diamonds Leads Effort to Raise Money for Africa's Children

damien hirstDamien Hirst is again playing the role of philanthropist (so I have to be nice), along with Raqib Shaw and Marc Quinn. The artists have donated paintings to an auction that London jeweler Laurence Graff is holding for FACET (For Africa's Children Every Time). Graff wants to raise $1.26 million for the organization, which seeks to support the education, health and quality of life of children in Africa ... where Graff Diamonds picks up most of its raw material.

Graff's event follows several other charity auctions this year, all of which were pretty impressive in their results. Sotheby's raised ₤453,950 for two organizations that help orphans in Africa, and Christie's raised an astounding €342.5 million at its Yves Saint Laurent collection auction back in February – the money will be used to fund HIV research and fight the spread of AIDS.

The first lot donated was by Graff himself: diamond earrings estimated to be worth around ₤80,000. The other paintings (e.g., by Hirst) are pegged at around ₤100,000 each.

Artists in Need Helping People in Need: Leibovitz and Hirst for Red Cross

On November 17, 2009, several celebrity-designed luggage will go up for auction at Sotheby's. The purpose is to celebrate the 150th anniversary of the Red Cross, which is about as worthy an organization as one can imagine. In all seriousness – most people have no idea the true range of services and support that the Red Cross offers. If a soldier overseas needs to be reached because of an emergency back home, the family can call the Red Cross, which will do all the legwork. So, it's exciting to see some big names getting behind this cause.

Among the designers, however, are some artists who have been in the news lately. Annie Leibovitz, fresh from her negotiations with Art Capital Group over her $24 million loan, is finding some time for goodwill despite her financial situation. Her contribution is a red-lined backpack designed specifically for camera equipment.

Damien Hirst has also gotten in on the charitable action. The taxidermist artist who developed a name dumping maritime life in formaldehyde and affixing as many diamonds as possible to skulls has put together a tall black trunk with little drawers to hold surgical devices – which is what Hirst uses to build his ... ummmm ... stuff. This piece, in particular, should be in high demand, now that a Damien Hirst piece may actually have been touched by Damien Hirst. Last November, he laid off 17 of the 22 people involved in his pill cabinet creation.

Let's hope that these pieces – and the others brought to Sotheby's in two months – sell for fantastic prices. Art market be damned! This event is for a great organization, and every extra dollar of success will help someone out who needs it.

The First Bentley Mulsanne Sells at Pebble Beach Auction for Half a Million Dollars

How much would you pay for the privilege of owning the very first Bentley Mulsanne to be produced? The all-new flagship from Crewe was unveiled this past weekend at the Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance. And while official pricing has yet to be announced, the Arnage which it replaces lists in the mid-$200k range.

In conjunction with auction house Gooding & Company, Bentley sold Mulsanne #1 to the highest bidder, with proceeds going to Pebble Beach's official charity, the Phil Hill Foundation. Bentley CEO Franz-Josef Paefgen and Bentley Heritage Collection chief Richard Charlesworth were on hand to participate from the stage, and prefaced the auction with a presentation of company founder W.O. Bentley's personal vehicle, the 1920's-era 8-liter Bentley. After failing to generate bids at $500,000, bidding on Mulsanne #1 started at $300,000 and climbed back up to the half-million mark, where it sold to an undisclosed bidder.

Pair of Ford GTs up for Auction for Juvenile Diabetes

Getting our hands on the out-of-production Ford GT is cause enough. We wouldn't need any more justification. We'd need the cash, but not the justification. But just in case, the Ford Motor Company and RM Auctions are offering up a pair of early production Ford GTs to benefit the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation. The pair – including the sixth example produced, in red with white stripes, and the seventh, in white with blue – will be offered at the Meadow Brook and Monterey auctions respectively, which are both coming up in August. Each example is expected to fetch somewhere in the $150,000-$200,000 range, so if you've got the cash on hand and were looking for another excuse, here it is.

Ferrari Donates Special-Edition F430 for Abruzzo Disaster Relief

The annual Leggenda e Passione auction at the Ferrari factory in Maranello always features a staggering array of unique sports and racing cars from the company's history, and this year's is shaping up to be no exception. Among the myriad historic Ferraris heading up on the block this weekend, Alain Prost's F1 car, a 330 P4 Le Mans racer and a unique 250 Testa Rossa are headlining in the event. But Ferrari has just added one more vehicle to the docket: a special one-off F430 to raise funds for relief work in the Abruzzo region of Italy, which was struck by a devastating earthquake last month.

The special-edition supercar will be the last F430 off the assembly line when production ends later this year to make way for the next-generation model. It will be painted silver and gold, the colors of the city of Aquila that bore the brunt of the disaster, and come equipped with an array of extra features from Ferrari's extensive customization catalog. The special F430 will be auctioned off at the event, with proceeds going to disaster relief in Abruzzo.

This year's Race to Erase MS charity fundraiser gala in Los Angeles raised a record $2 million for the Nancy Davis Foundation for Multiple Sclerosis, aided by the generous bid of $270,000 for the first new Lamborghini Gallardo LP560-4 Spyder to be delivered to the United States. The bid was placed by Malibu couple Kymberly Gold, co-founder of True Religion Jeans, and music producer Victor Newman, who will receive the car next month when US deliveries of the exotic roadster are scheduled to begin. The car was prepared specially by Lamborghini for the charity event, held this past weekend at the Hyatt Regency Century Plaza, in black with orange accents to mirror the charity's colors.

Win-Win Vacations: Luxe Travel Meets Big Donations

We've seen the rise of "voluntourism" and eco-tourism of the luxe variety (think private bugalow in Figi, not hippie yurt). But giving back and luxury travel have rarely been an oft-cited pair. Until, that is, CharityFolks.com came on the scene, crafting unique travel plans including exclusive meet-and-greets like an evening with the cast of The Sopranos, then sending along the proceeds to charity. Each trip functions as an auction, so you'll need to get your virtual paddle up if you want to claim jaunts like a weekend at the Newport Jazz Festival, or luxe accommodations at Vail. The site hosts more traditional charity auctions as well, which have been written about here in the past, but if you planned to stay at the Four Seasons whilst touring Provence anyway, why not do it through an organization that will then donate on your behalf to UCLA's Jonsson Cancer Center?
