Trophies, Rings, And More At Upcoming Sports Memorabilia Auction

world series trophyWhich is worth more, a 2007 Boston Red Sox World Series Trophy or a 2000 New York Yankees World Series Trophy? We'll get a chance to find out when the Grey Flannel Holiday Auction sells off both trophies along with a whole plate of sports memorabilia on December 8. The auction includes plenty of championship jewelry such as J.R. Redmond's diamond-covered 2001 New England Patriots Super Bowl XXXVI player's ring and a 1984 Boston Celtics Championship ring that belonged to Red Auerbach's personal attorney, Bob Richards, and a 2009 Yankees World Championship ring.

The auction also features soccer memorabilia with a jersey worn by the great Brazilian striker Pelé during his tenure with the New York Cosmos and a jersey from German superstar and two-time European Footballer of the Year Franz Beckenbauer.

"If there is a single sport where ground-floor opportunities still exist, it's horseracing," said Richard E. Russek, Grey Flannel Auctions' president. "A thoroughbred horse runs in only so many races, and there are only so many blankets or halters per race. The blanket worn by a prize-winning horse is much rarer than a modern-era baseball jersey." This auction includes a collection of blankets, halters and other items from a long-held collection such as the blanket Big Brown wore when he won the 2008 (134th) Kentucky Derby. The white fleece blanket is adorned with a bouquet of red roses, the words "Kentucky Derby 134," the official Kentucky Derby symbol, and an embroidered patch with the race date and the image of a jockey on his horse. It opens with a $2,500 minimum bid.

Stanley Cup Champion Blackhawks Get Their Rings

A new hockey season is beginning and last season's Stanley Cup champs, the Chicago Blackhawks recently received their rings. The team hadn't won Lord Stanley's cup since 1961 and they celebrated in style with 14K white gold rings laden with 404 stones, a total of approximately eight carats of diamonds and other gemstones worth around $30,000. The front of the ring features the Blackhawks Indian head logo atop the Stanley Cup and bordered by the words "Stanley Cup Champions" on the face. Each ring is personalized with a team member's name and number. One side has baguette-cut rubies and pear-shaped emeralds set in the shape of the Hawks' crossed tomahawks and the other shows a diamond-studded Stanley Cup and the 2010 season's motto: One Goal along with the championship years: 2010, 1961, 1938 and 1934. The rings were created by Jostens and the inside of each player's ring has the NHL logo and the names of the four teams the Hawks dispatched in the playoffs along with the series scores.

The Puck Daddy blog shows a few other rings form the past few years as well as the far more modest 1961 rings.

wsb championship ringThe Lakers aren't the only ones to get fancy champion rings recently. World Sport Bike champion Ben Spies recently picked up his own championship bling during a visit to the post-race SBK Paddock Show. Italian jewelry company Circuiti Gioelli of Novara created a WSB champion ring to be given to the winner. No time delay here, just half-an-hour after race 2 had assured Ben's 2009 triumph, the ring was already been engraved with his name and was ready for the presentation.

The ring is in white 18K gold and diamonds with the SBK logo rendered in rubies and sapphires. It is engraved with the words '2009 World Champion' and is studded with 94 diamonds, 28 sapphires and 20 rubies. It is worth around 30,000 Euros.

Lakers Receive Championship Bling

kobe bryantEarlier this week the Lakers received their championship rings and this year's rings are some of the flashiest yet. Several members of the Buss family and team captains Derek Fisher and Kobe Bryant weighed in on the design for the rings. The rings are made of a special limited 15K gold to celebrate the 15th championship. Dr. Jerry Buss requested the 14 round diamonds circling the top of the ring to represent 14 championships with the small gold trophy on the top representing the 15th. The team captains requested that each player have their own face and jersey number on the side of the ring. On non-player rings the Los Angeles skyline takes the place of the face. Each ring is authenticated by a serial number and there are hidden etchings of the Lakers logo on the ring. The diamond-studded top echoes the shape of the Staples center. Each ring comes with a box that has two LED spotlights inside. The 2009 Lakers championship rings were created by Jason of Beverly Hills and are worth about $30,000.
