Young Collector Alert: Japanese Ceramics

Conventional wisdom for the new collector used to be: "Start with prints and as you learn more, graduate to painting." Today, on the contrary, another approach is build an art collection by acquiring ceramics. A good place to begin is the current show of sparkling and richly detailed enameled porcelain of Jun Takegoshi at the Joan B. Mirviss LTD gallery on New York's Upper East Side. Takegoshi's (b.1948) polychrome enamel vessels won't send you to the bank for a second mortgage. They range in price from $3,500-$13,000. Each is a little miracle of color and form, delicately painted with glaze and over-glaze. The secret to the vivid turquoise which dominates the current Mirviss show is extended firing time at low temperatures. However, the special genius of Takegoshi is his motifs---sparrows, ibis, king fishers, even dragons, each cunningly painted with individual personalities. Takegoshi doesn't just paint from nature, he imbues his creatures, the beguiling birds especially, with facial expressions ---anger, sadness, happiness, and could that be jealousy?

Bailey Doesn't Bark 23K Gold Ceramics

bailey doesn't bark ceramics
Nice ceramic dinnerware doesn't have to be stuffy or fancy, like these artistic and slightly funky designs from Bailey Doesn't Bark. The above shown cup set (and minis set) is designed by artist Re Jin Lee and includes 4 porcelain cups each hand decorated with a 23K gold tree in a different stage of the four seasons. And I'm always a sucker for details so I also love how each cup has the season written inside the rim in a charming script-like font.

The 23K gold cup sets sell for $107 and there's a non-gold black version that's only $93 and just as charming. Plus check out some of Bailey Doesn't Bark's other fun creations -- like this teabag teaspoon cup and saucer set.

Heath Ceramics Summer Collection

Heath Ceramics' newest seasonal collection features an upscale picnic bag that comes with a caddy and two three-piece place settings, plus features a wine slot and and a pocket for linens and flatware. The bag is multi-purpose and is "made to last a lifetime (just like your Heathware), from industrial materials," by designer/maker S. Stein in Santa Fe, N.M. Available April 1-October 1, picnic set, $548; bag alone, $348. Comes in persimmon (shown) and olive (see gallery).

The collection also offers a variety of pieces that don't look especially summery (the colors are more fall-like) but are nice enough to use all year, indoors or out. They are: two styles of bowl, a bud vase, a bud vase set, a bulb vase, two single-stem vases, a vase set with all three kinds, and a two- or four-cup set. See the gallery for a few photos of these simple, lovely pieces.

Diana Fayt Ceramics

Diana Fayt is a ceramic artist and designer who creates unique pottery pieces that are more art than craft. Her pieces each seem to tell their own story and she has had solo shows in the U.S. and Tokyo. Creating each piece takes around 13 steps and pieces like the large bowl shown above can take up to seven hours to complete not including the 23 hours of kiln time. Her work is handbuilt with molds she makes herself and all the drawings are her own freehand illustrations which are etched in clay using found objects such as old hand forged nails. The bowl shown here measures 10.5" x 5" and has hand etched and painted dogwood flowers in a light creamy yellow with a crackle finish. It sells for $335. She also keeps a blog!

Neutrino Ceramics

I'm a sucker for unique and beautiful dishes, and even though they're fairly modern looking (I generally lean towards more organic and antique looking pieces) these red and white creations from Neutrino Designs really caught my eye. They're very bright and clean and cheery -- which is great now in the gray and dreary dead of winter. The Neutrino Ceramics line includes everything from salt and pepper shakers to coffee mugs to a set of coasters, with each being available in your choice of 7 different red and white patterns that have a decidedly scientific feel.

Heath Ceramics Bud Vases

Earlier this year we covered Heath Ceramics and their partnership with Alice Waters and Chez Panisse. Heath Ceramics also does a variety of seasonal limited edition gifts that are worth checking out. Their winter offerings include tea sets, vases and bowls in a deep pomegranate red. I also love this set of three bud vases in silver, gold and white on a white tray. Even with just bare branches in them they would make a striking display. The set sells for $92.

Chez Panisse Tableware

When it comes to high end dining, most consider the food, rather than the tableware. At Berkeley's Chez Panisse, chef/owner Alice Waters worked with Heath Ceramics to design custom place settings. Her reasoning was that since her food was locally sourced, her tableware should be, too. While you can buy the full range of Thomas Keller's tableware, Heath Ceramics has only released a 4-piece set, along with some serving dishes, for home use from their Chez Panisse Collection. The set is available in a neutral almond/ginger color. Price: $146.
