The Fashion Statement: It Bags are Back to Basic

Toss your roomy totes, slim clutches and bohemian bags with hardware and fringe to the back of the closet.

The It bags for fall are small and basic; ladylike, almost to the point of prim; and minimalist. Square-shaped or rectangular, the handbags often have long shoulder straps and feature a very simple fold-over envelope style flap with a simple clasp. Color schemes are fairly basic, too, with most in solid brown and tan leather and black.

These bags resemble the "pocket books" you once plucked from your mother's or grandmother's closet to play dress-up. They are ultra understated and have a conservative '80s power suit feel. With long shoulder straps the bags rest at the hip.

Hermès has resurrected the Constance, a model with an H clasp that can be worn over the shoulder or messenger style.

Phoebe Philo introduced Celine's Classic Box, a small bag with compartments, closed by a square gold clasp. The fashion flock has been seen with the bag in black, brown and red leather.

Ralph Lauren has one in shiny brown croc with a gleaming round gold clasp. Fendi has also brought back a classic: the Logo Square bag emblazoned with Fs.

Celine Dmitri Shearling Bag, Handbag of the Day

This is a comfort bag one to be worn with your favorite jeans and a cozy sweater. The shoulder bag is done in soft sand shearling with a cream-colored adjustable log shoulder strap. This Celine bag has calf-leather trim and a silvertone clasp. Not everyone is a fan of this bag, over at BagWhiz they likened it to the UGG boot, a trend which has long since sailed. It sells for $2,200.

Phoebe Philo to Helm Celine

It's been two long years since famed Chloé resuscitator Phoebe Philo left the studio to focus on her family. But come October, Philo will take over as Creative Director at Celine, in a move that parent co. LVMH hopes will again breathe new life into a flagging luxury brand.

Credited for designing perhaps the mother of all It-bags, the Chloé Paddington, Philo started out as Stella McCartney's assistant at Chloé before McCartney left to design her own eponymous line. And like everything in fashion, Philo's appointment makes whatever happens at fashion week (which starts today in New York) feel like old news. She'll present her first collection for Celine in March 2009.

Celine 'Watch Me Dance' Clutch, Handbag of the Day

This bag looks a little dated to me (80's anybody?) but I'm not the fashion police (apparently this look is slated to come back 'in' this fall) and I love the name so thought it was worth featuring. Celine's "Watch Me Dance" Clutch bag is made of patchwork leather in bright color squares on a blue background. It features a flap front with a turnlock closure, an optional shoulder strap, satin lining, and a little padlock with key trinket that dangles off the back. $1,200

Celine 'Watch Me Work' Bag, Handbag of the Day

Whoa, there's no chance anybody will not see you coming if you've got this bright red over-sized beauty thrown over your shoulder. It's the Celine 'Watch Me Work' bag and it's made of soft patent leather with silver hardware. It is a great working bag due to its numerous pockets and compartments, including a fold-over front and divided interior with zip top compartment. It's a simple design that leans mostly on the color and materials for its style appeal, but interesting fashion accents include a turn-lock closure on the front, a cute little Celine charm, and a detachable silver chain shoulder strap. $2,100.

Celine Nautil Bag, Handbag of the Day

The Celine Nautil bag is about both bold bright fashion and practical functionality. Available in classic ruby red or crisp bright white, the Nautil is made of crinkled patent leather so it shines (but doesn't blind!). It also features contoured top seams, polished silver hardware, handles attached with clasps (8" drop), and my favorite handbag quality: a flat base so it sits upright. And the brand logo is everywhere on this bag: engraved onto the medallion on the front and on the studs used throughout, embossed on a leather tag inside, and incorporated into the pattern of the interior textile lining. $850

Celine Anatomic Bag, Handbag of the Day

It's not entirely obvious as to what, if anything, gives Celine's Anatomic Bag its name, but it might have something to do with the fact that the design is very user-friendly, though "anatomic" is not the first term that would spring to mind. The bag has a long, rounded body with a top zipper and flap pockets at either end. Each feature allows for easy access. The shoulder straps are wide and flat, made of the same soft leather that the rest of the handbag is made of. It measures 17"L x 7.5"H x 7"W. Price: $1,600.

Celine Pag Satchel, Handbag of the Day

The Celine Pag Satchel is made of mahogany-colored goatskin with a black patent calfskin trim and has and unusually rich look due to the colors and textures of the leather. The Italian-made bag has two patent leather shoulder straps affixed with gold rings, which match the rest of the gold-tone hardware. Like the Zac Posen bag from yesterday, it also has a front flap pocket and is adorned with tassels. A new trend for spring, perhaps? The bag measures 9"H x 14"W x 6 1/2"D. Price: $1,495.

Celine Boogie Night Leather Strass Bag, Handbag of the Day

Buying a bag based on the fact that you like the name is not necessarily the best plan, but you have to admit that the Boogie Night Leather Strass Bag from Celine does have a good one. The smooth-grained black leather bag is adorned with jewel-cut crystals and bright silver hardware. It has two small rolled leather handles that fit nicely in hand, and a top zipper to keep everything inside secure when you're on the go. The lining is fabric and there is one pocket inside, as well as two tiny ones at either end on the outside of the purse. It measures only 8" x 4.75" x 3". Price: $930.

Celine Leather Frame Bag, Handbag of the Day

If you take a closer look at this Leather Frame Bag by Celine, you'll see that the top frame is not an ordinary one. Most frame bags just have some sort of reinforcing that is functional, but not decorative, while this one has a lovely, cylindrical bar at the top that has an embossed gold clasp and is accented with gold rings at either end. In addition to the classic styling of the rest of the bag, including the double rolled-leather handles, it really gives the bag a very polished finish. Like the clasp, all the hardware, including the "feet" on the bottom of the bag, is gold. Inside, the purse is lined with black printed silk. Price: $1,395.

Celine Asymmetric Shoulder Bag, Handbag of the Day

The Asymmetric Shoulder Bag by Celine is a great purse if you're looking for something more unique than the relatively standard shapes of most handbags. With one squared end and one rounded end, the bag is subtly attention-getting, enhanced with gold and wood accents on the outside and a red-lined interior. The bottom of the mahogany-colored bag is reinforced and has small gold feet to prevent scuffing the leather.

The only problem with this bag is not in the item, but in its description from Net-a-Porter, which suggests using it to carry a small umbrella. With a purse this nice, it is best to carry the umbrella in hand and not risk getting it wet. Price: $1,550.
